I make a 5V external 8x AA battery pack which works well with the M-1
(or any 5V device) and may be of interest:

I wasnt debating 'pure' (never sampled) A vs. D, rather, I was elaborating
on what Seth said, that there is no point in transferring existing digital
recordings to analog. True, vinyl may sound better, but try to find any
live concert recording from the last 10 years that has not been through a
digital stage, they are few and far between.

Am I mistaken or did I read somewhere that the latest
firmware release from Creative solved some of the
problems with using the NJB3 as a digital recording
device? I am thinking of using a NJB3 with a pair of
DPA 4060's and a preamp that has coax and optical in &
out. Is this a good setup?

NEED TAPER for 7/3 WILCO and Fountains of Wayne
WILCO's final show of the main Summer season will be on July 3rd at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI. The acts will be:
Pet Engine
Fountains of Wayne
WILCO
Since WILCO is taper-friendly (audience only), hopefully this means a great tape will be made of this show!
If you know anyone going, or are going yourself, PLEASE tape Fountains of Wayne. They are an amazing band, and this show will make first electric (full band) show of their tour for 'Welcome Interstate Managers.' Fountains of Wayne generally doesn't mind if you record, if they feel they are going to do a nice show (i.e. the lead singer's voice is OK).
Please contact me at:

Anyone who can help me out in any way will receive a CDR of Jeff Tweedy live at the Metro in Chicago, IL on Thursday, March 22, 2001 (3/22/2001). He did about two songs with the Nicholas Tremulis Band for The Third Waltz. I flew out from NJ and made the best known audience recording! That show date isn't even listed in the archives of this site!
Thanks for reading,
Tom Roach

I am still looking for the 16 June 2003 Van Morrison show
from the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, CT.
I have 900+ Van shows on CDR, as well as access to a large inventory of
Van on DAT, including the two Boston shows from 14 June and 15 June.
Also have a solid CDR collection of Bowie and Bruce.
Best,
Niall

However the pcm-m1 wants 4.5V DC.
5V may decrease the lifespan of the unit

Hi, all.
I hate to break up the latest analog-vs-digital debate
with another question that's surely been asked before,
but I value the input of the DAT-heads techie masses.
My Plextor 12/10/32 seemingly died this weekend, as
the tray doesn't want to eject anymore. I was hoping
someone on the list could suggest a place to buy a new
Plextor SCSI burner for a reasonable price. Thanks.
I'll provide BWT when I have a functional drive.
Thanks,
*phiL*

http://www.pricewatch.com will usually get you within a small
percentage of the best price.
google for "plextor" and look at the ads can also work.

Eric Johnson is currently on a small tour for the months of June & July.
July 2003
1st/Tue - The Lounge - Memphis, TN
2nd/Wed - Dave's On Dickson - Fayetteville, AR
4th/Fri - Eyes to the Sky Festival - Lisle, IL
5th/Sat - Madison Theatre - Covington, KY
10th/Thu - Gypsy Tea Room - Dallas, TX
11th/Fri - The Engine Room - Houston, TX
12th/Sat - Stubb's - Austin, TX
Is there anyone out there who can record him? If you don't know who he is
and you live near a show, go and tape him. You'll definitely dig it. I have
plenty to trade if someone can capture a show. Please email me at
samegawa@hotmail.com if you can get a show.
If you don't already know, I would be pretty stealthy about it. EJ's
management does not like tapers unfortunately. Good luck!

Analog sounds better. My turtable (Michell Gyrodec/SME 309/Koetsu rosewood
sig) sounds better than any digital souce I've ever heard. Is there more
distortion? perhaps. Is analog more musical? Most definitely. Even 40
year records I own typically sound better than the equivalent CD's. Records
have much firmer bass, a warmer midrange and the high end is not nearly as
shrill sounding as digital.
Case in point Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain is pretty much unlistenable on
CD (yes, even the newest issues), but my original copy sounds amazing.
Whoever destroyed this masterpiece to put out the CD edition should be shot
as far as I'm concerned.
I view digital is a necessary evil. If I could sneak a Nagra Reel to Reel
into shows I would. The advantages of digital are:
1) small size
2) long recording time withou need for flipping tape
3) portability
That's it. as far as I'm concerned.
LP's will always be my preferred listening source.
-Gregory
