In response to Dennis,
I have been trying off and on to work witth Bands wh play in a local
Blues Club that books natinal and international touring bands to play
there. I was there one night at a private party Los Lobos played, ad
was there because i had cultivated a friendship with the former owners.
I also developed a friendship with the sound guy. It's nice to be able
to hang around the soundboard, and pick up a few tips from someone wh's
been behindone for 15 years.
A couple of things I wanted to comment on that you wrote:

I bought a pair of Sony MDR V600 head phones about a year ago. After
buying them, I went an plugged them into my reciever. It did not shut
off the speakers, and I didn't do it manually. I cranked up the stereo
much louder thaan I ever would, living in an aartment. Klipsch speakers
put out a lot of volume. Maybe because the music from the stereo was
the same as the speakers, I couldn't hear the speakers, but my neighbr
sure could. Perhaps if the sound from the speakers was different from
the soound of the speakers, things would have been different.

I have been planning to put toggether, and actully have gatered
equipment to have a "budget" prtable studio. if you have a split snake
near the stage, and runyour own snake, that seems ideal to me. Oterwise
hpefully the main SBD is not using any of the inserts, and you can pull
a signal from there. The split definitely seems better, and running
your own snake. I have spent a lot f time poking around SBD's and amp
racks, trying to figure this out. What I have, and will need another is
a Tascam 34B. That way I can record a 1 hour set, with some overlap,
and make it into a recording with a seemless splice. I woould like to
use a 16 channel board, mix down to 4 channels live, than mae a final
mixx to 2 channel. Like Dennis said, the house soound gets what it
needs, and the recording getss what it needs, and I get what i need.
