Just got back from going through security at three separate airports
(Manchester, NH and Kansas City, MO outbound with blanks and Denver, CO
return flight with masters) and had no problems taking them as a carry-on.
I'd be very leery of putting recorded tapes in your checked bags because
the machines for checked luggage are MUCH stronger. Even the weaker
machines for carry-on bags have a sign that says not to put any exposed
film through more than five times - which makes me wonder why five would
make any difference other than to exacerbate something that's already
happened with one pass. But they didn't affect my tapes any.
BTW, I was out in Denver to tape Blues Traveler if anyone's interested in
a trade - Leftover Salmon opened 1st night and Ziggy Marley/Shurman opened
2nd night. Elation KM201's>V2>D8, drop me a line if you want. If anyone's
taping anything of the ongoing tour (especially the gig at the Boulder
Theatre on August 9th!) I'd love to pick up anything you've got.

Mechanical vibration is always a problem with cardioids than with omnis.
Make sure that you SECURELY anchor the mic cable (with adequate slack to
the mic) at the base of the shock mount with tape or tiewrap, or
whatever vibration that might travel along the cable from the adjacent
stand, etc, will be efficiently transferred to the microphone, thus
bypassing the shockmount altogether. The only role the stand plays is
how sensitive it is to mechanical resonance. Generally speaking, heavier
stands are more inert. If you can thump the stand and it rings, that
doesn't bode well.

hi,
just got back from the costello gig in NYC. awesome is all i can say. he
didnt say two words, just played a lot of songs, for almost 2 hrs. being
that he wasnt pushing a record, the set list was really varied and just
great. i listened to the tape in the car on the way home, sounded nice. the
crowd got a little noisy and annoying at times, but outdoor shows tend to
have that . if anyone wants to trade, drop me a line.

The Dead's new "instant CD" policy caught the eye of ABC News this
weekend. You might catch a rerun of this story on some weekend ABC
news show, or early Monday morning. You can watch the video online at
www.abcnews.go.com, but apparently you have to subscribe to watch
video. You can read the text of the story here:

Digital Dead
Grateful Dead Begins Burning, Selling Own Concert CDs
By Bill Redeker
ABC News, 7/11/03
M O R R I S O N, Colo., July 11 - For the past week, the spectacular
natural amphitheater Red Rocks, carved out of the Rocky Mountains' front
range near Denver, has played host to 10,000 people a night, attracted by
the legendary Grateful Dead.
Actually, make that "The Dead." Since leader Jerry Garcia died in 1995, the
band has renamed itself a couple of times. The group's fans are extremely
loyal. "Deadheads" are known to follow the band across the country during
its annual summer tour.
This year, they've added an attraction for the faithful. Lead singer and
guitarist Bob Weir calls it an "experiment." Every concert is recorded and
digitally transferred to compact discs that can be ordered at the concert
venue and shipped within a week and a half.
It's like going to the same concert over and over again. And it could well be
the future of album sales for "performance" bands like The Dead, for many
reasons:
Cost: A three-CD set of a typical performance costs $22. Compare that to
the usual $17 or $18 charged by music stores for a single disc.
Incentive for the performers: Most bands like The Dead receive less than $1
for each album sold. By controlling the recording and marketing of their
work, they now earn up to $8 or $10 an album.
This means a band does not have to sell a million records to make a decent
profit. It can sell far fewer. It also means that less "commercial" songs get
recorded. Finally, it should encourage start-up bands that can't afford to
record with a major label.
Back of the Bus CD Burning
A simple laptop computer with not-so-simple software is the key. Dennis
Leonard, The Dead's audio mixer, who is nicknamed "Wizard," sits in a tiny
room or even in the back of the band's bus, mastering the recorded tracks
and storing them in digital files. He can "burn" a CD from his computer or
collect the digitalized tracks and send them off to Chicago for duplication.
It's that easy.
"They're much better than the free downloads from the Internet," said
Leonard. "Online MP3 files are compressed and don't provide nearly the
range as a CD."
Someday, he believes the recordings will be digitally downloaded from a
machine at the concert site only moments after the last song has been
played. Fans will actually be able to listen to the concert they just attended
on their car audio system, driving home.
The faithful seem to like the idea. So far, about 25,000 CDs have been sold.
That's about 2,000 for each performance during The Dead's summer tour.
Do the arithmetic, and the band pockets a quarter-million dollars. Call it
"supplemental income," as they have already earned most of their money
from concert ticket sales. Tickets go for $52.50 a head - or Deadhead, that
is.
The egalitarian breakthrough is not, however for every musical group. Some
bands cannot survive outside a studio because members need audio
sweetening, dubbed-over voice tracks and other tricks to sound presentable.
But the technology is perfect for bands that thrive on interaction with their
audiences. Jam bands such as Phish, the Allman Brothers Band and String
Cheese Incident have all embraced the "road recordings."
‘Room for Both’
This does not mean that The Dead will prohibit private recordings of their
concerts. For years, individuals have been allowed to set up their own
microphones and tape recorders at Dead concerts and make personal
recordings. In fact, the Grateful Dead actually encouraged the practice and
reserved a special area for the recorders.
But the road-show CDs will easily compete with the homemade recordings
because they are professionally recorded and mastered.
"There's room for both," said Cameron Sears, the CEO of The Dead. "We're
not going to prevent people from doing that. We hope they appreciate the
fact we're doing it and by supporting this avenue we're opening up other
doors for things that could potentially unfold."
In the meantime, the band continues its summer tour while picking up
pocket change. "We're turning some handsome coin here," said Weir.
"It's good for music, it's bad for a small corner of the whole music world -
that being people who make money selling records - and I'm sorry for
them," he said with a wink.
What a long, strange trip it's been - and continues to be for the iconic road
band.

Subject: Taping at TROCADERO in Philly tonight... maybe
Date: Sat, 12 Jul 2003 09:59:10 GMT
Hi fellow DAT-heads. I will be recording a band that I know fairly well (somewhat personally as I've seen them and other members' bands as well). They cannot allow taping now, since they signed under S-Curve/EMI/Virgin in November 2002. Virgin is apparently anti-taping, so even though they used to sometimes allow a stand (if someone taping them actually had one!) and soundboard feeds, they cannot any longer. This means I have been stealthing them with my new stereo mics: DPA 4021's. I run those to my AETA PSP3 and Sony M1 and the sound is pretty detailed but still pretty creamy and smooth. Of course there is also a lot of loud and tight bass, which is why I love these mics : )
Anyway, please let me know if recording at the TROC in Philadelphia is worth it or not. The band doesn't mind I tape them, but as I said they can't help me out (legally). I am forced to walk through detectors, pat-downs or sometimes nothing, depending on the venue. The shows are filled with me worrying I might get busted, which always puts a damper on the whole day and night...
The last thing I need is to get busted! I heard the sound at this venue SUCKS. Is this true?
Please respond to me privately at PromTheme@aol.com or TheSmashingPumpkins-33@juno.com
I really need to know by this afternoon if possible... I had no clue the Troc was so shitty for taping until I looked it up on DAT-heads just now...

Tom Roach, NJ

I am in some serious need of help with my D7. I recently purchased a used D7
from someone who claimed that it was recently serviced. I taped my first
show the other night and since listened to my recording twice. It came out
wonderful. Well when I went to do a transfer... all I heard was some weird

snapped. Has anyone had a similar problem? If anyone has any ideas about how
to fix the tape problem or knows what might have caused it, please email me
