I could have sworn I tried this as part of my tests, but perhaps I didn't. This time, I went overboard, I muted everything possible, unplugged my speakers from my "other" soundcard (Turtle Beach Santa Cruz) turned off my windows sounds etc. Recorded 60 seconds of digital silence to HD through the Sek'd card, burned the file to CDR, cranked it to 10 on my stereo, and no more hiss!!! However, there is a very, very faint buzzing type noise that can be heard, and quite frankly I think it may be my stereo, not an artifact in the file. Date: Tue, 15 Jul 2003 19:54:03 -0400 Hi everyone, Hi, there is a show tonight in Pittsburgh I was hoping someone could tape for me. If not, does anyone know someone who might be able to tape the Detroit, Chicago, or Minneapolis shows? Sorry for the last-minute requests. I can tape a show in the tri-state area in stealth mode or with a stand, using DPA 4021's > AETA PSP3 > Sony M1 The ticket and transportation, and other costs, are on me. The opener is Ben Lee, who is amazing in his own right. It will be their final performance as a band, and unfortunately I am unable to make it to the show. If anyone plans on taping, please let me know. I have plenty to trade in return, including a couple of 2SJ shows from this tour. Thanks! The club is pretty cool with tapers, so I may be able to bring in the stand and the Schoeps regardless. Also are any LA or west coast folks planning on taping the Hepcat (legandary 90's trad. ska band) reunion show in LA at the HOB July 26? I'd love a copy if anyone does make it to that show. The Aggrolites (x-Dynamic Pressure) are opening. r. ------------------------------ From: mattz62@juno.com Subject: Earthworks SR-77s and Sound Devices MP-2 for sale Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2003 11:31:49 GMT Hi, I have the following for sale. 1 pair of Earthworks SR-77s (consecutive serial #s) w/ wooden jewelers case, excellent condition - $600 1 Sound Devices MP-2 preamp, excellent condition - $525 If interested, hit me up. Seattle shows on 8 CD-R's (12/5, 12/6, 12/8, 12/9, see www.fivehorizons.com for details). These are stealth recordings "unknown Schoeps -> unknown preamp -> unknown DAT" if you need more details sorry can't help you. They all sound great; first show has a few minutes mono where someone bumped the taper pretty hard and one channel went out...fortunately he recovered before too long. ninja dave. In this month's Stereophile there is an editorial about the compression and peak limiting that recording engineers are using these days in order to increase the apparent loudness of the program material: http://www.stereophile.com/showarchives.cgi?851. They are selective about it, and CD seems to be getting the worst of it compared to SACD and audio DVD. I wonder if what you are hearing is, at least in part, something like what he is talking about rather than purely the inadequacies of digital media. If this is the case, maybe you should have said "especially the newest issues" instead of "even the newest issues". >LP's will always be my preferred listening source. Always is a long time, and I've heard some pretty good stuff at 24 bits and 96K samples per second. I can't demonstrate it, but I suspect that 24/192K is indistinguishable from analog, at least to human ears. Even if it's not, there will be some combination of sample size/rate that is. The only question is when it will be technically feasible. I have read at least some opinions that think that is now and that 24/96K is it. One advantage of digital that you didn't mention is that the medium doesn't wear when it is played. Vinyl does noticeably, and even a tape will eventually wear out with use. I know of no limits on how many times you can play a CD. Lack of background noise is another. This is not an attack on analog, BTW. It's what I grew up with and what taught me to love music. -- ============================================================= Jimmy Wilkinson | Professor of Computer Science jimmy@cs.CofC.edu | The College of Charleston (843) 953-8160 | Charleston SC 29424 http://www.cs.cofc.edu/~jimmy If there is one word to describe me, that word would have to be "profectionist".
