Hey there.
The following GY!BE masters are up for trade:
03/25/03 Cleveland DAB > MT180
04/03/03 Brooklyn DAB > MT877
04/04/03 Brooklyn DAB > MT877
As of right now this only goes out to tapers. Once I trade them out as much
as possible I will do plenty of B&P in a few weeks. Until then, freebie and
b&p emails will be ignored.
Be well
Keith

Subject: more analog vs digital

Jimmy Wilkinson said -
"In this month's Stereophile there is an editorial about the
compression and peak limiting that recording engineers are using
these days in order to increase the apparent loudness of the program
material.... They are selective about it, and CD seems to be getting
the worst of it compared to SACD and audio DVD. I wonder if what you
are hearing is, at least in part, something like what he is talking
about rather than purely the inadequacies of digital media. If this is
the case, maybe you should have said "especially the newest issues"
instead of "even the newest issues"."
This has been a big problem on some of the Hendrix resissues that have
come out under the aegis of the "family foundation". Hendrix fans who
have heard and are familiar with some of the source soundboard tapes
were puzzled by sound issues in the new CD;s. A transfer to .wav
showed flat tops on many of the wave forms, apparently due to the
compression techniques used. It's a shame that an incredible engineer
like Eddie Kramer could get pulled into this but indeed - he was in
charge of the new production engineering.
">LP's will always be my preferred listening source."
After reading some of the dialoguies and comments recently, I pulled
out a few pristine vinyl records - I had the turntable hooked up awhile
back to do some digital transfers but hadn't really sat down to LISTEN
to a record. I was amazed at how involving it is. I often thought that
my tendency in recent years to allow music to sort of play in the
background but rarely sittign down to just listen was an outgrowth of a
change in tastes and priorities. I now believe there's more to it - the
warmth and immediacy of the vinyl sound (despite the obvious flaws,
shortcomings and harmonic distortions) was so much noticably more
appealing. In all fairness, I should point out that my better 44.1 DAT
recordings sound better than CD's - there must really be something to
the notion that there are issues with production and mastering
techniques.
"Always is a long time, and I've heard some pretty good stuff at 24
bits and 96K samples per second. I can't demonstrate it, but I
suspect that 24/192K is indistinguishable from analog, at least to
human ears. Even if it's not, there will be some combination of
sample size/rate that is. The only question is when it will be
technically feasible. I have read at least some opinions that think
that is now and that 24/96K is it."
I have yet to hear 24/96 but have read comments from hard-core vinyl
freaks who say that it's the first digital format they've ever heard
that rivals vinyl analog sound.

ok, I had no offers, so I've put this pair of tix up on ebay. I will end it
if someone makes me a reasonable offer, and will cover shipping if that
offer is equal to face+ptbm charges.

I was wondering if anybody was planning on taping this or could tape it. That
would be really cool. I taped them when they came through Seattle earlier in
the year (and their acoustic gig which I also filmed). I've also taped their
other Seattle gigs.
Idlewild are pleased to confirm their appearance at The Village Voice 3rd
Annual 'Siren Music Festival'!
The 'Siren Music Festival' takes place at Coney Island Amusement Park, NYC, on
Saturday, July 19, 2003.
Entrance is free!

If anyone can tape this...
(especially the Metzger set). His band, TVBC, is taper friendly, so I'm guessing he is too. Don't know about the other performers in this show. Please, someone!
Thanks,

Subject: Paul Metzger to play solo at Salamander CD release show this Saturday
The reclusive local group Salamander (long form, Ash Ra Tempel-influenced psychedelia acclaimed by critics and record geeks on both sides of the Atlantic) will be playing on Saturday, July 19th at the Kitty Cat Klub in Dinkytown to celebrate the CD release of their long sold-out classic double LP "Birds Of Appetite" on the Australian label Camera Obscura. This will be an 18+ show, and they will be joined by Paul Metzger of TVBC doing a rare appearance on solo banjo (modified heavily with sympathetic strings and played in a raga-style) and their friends from Rhode Island, Black Forest/Black Sea. Bf/Bs features Jeffrey (formerly of the acclaimed acid-folk group The Iditarod) and his cellist friend Miriam doing extraordinary fractured and fingerpicked soundscapes with beautiful effects on everything. Should be an enjoyable evening. As this will take place in the upstairs portion of the venue, things will be a bit more on the mystical and acoustic end of the spectrum (the big st!
acks and redline guitar
noise will have to wait for a more volume-friendly venue), but will still shoot into the cosmos....
Things will get underway around 9:00PM.

Howdy folks:
I got some gear I am looking to sell. Anyone interested contact me off the
list.
Have a pair of the following:
Sennheiser K6 capsules: The K6 powering module is the heart of this
Sennheiser professional modular microphone system and can be powered either
by its internal 'AA' size 1.5 V battery or by 12-48V phantom power.
Different condenser microphone modules provide a wide variety of polar
patterns. Matte black, anodized scratch-resistant finish. No scratches,
perfect condition have had them for two years, bought them new.
ME 64 Cardioid mic capsule: Back-electret Microphone Capsule suitable for K6
and K6P Powering Modules. The ME 64 is a cardioid microphone capsule
designed for use with the K6 and K6P powering modules. It has a very wide
range of applications including reporting, interviews, dubbing, live sound
reinforcement and recording applications. Matte black, anodized,
scratch-resistant finish.
Bought them new less than a year a ago, no scratches, perfect condition.
ME 66 Shortshot gun capsule: The ME 66 is a short gun microphone capsule
designed for use with the K6 and K6P powering modules. It is especially
suitable for live taping, film and broadcast location applications and for
picking up quiet signals in noisy or acoustically live environments as it
discriminates against sound not emanating from the main pick-up direction.
Matte black, anodized, scratch-resistant finish. Bought them with the
capsules two years ago, no scratches, perfect condition.
Would like to sell all the caps and power modules togther: New is $1200
looking for
$600
Also for sale:
Denecke AD-20 pre amp: The AD-20 is a high quality battery operated
microphone preamp coupled with a low noise 20 bit ADC. The SPDIF outputs are
optical and coaxial and can drive standard consumer DAT machines or
computers that accept digital audio I/O cards, such as the Zefiro ZA-2.
New $315 - looking for $280 - used it for 3 shows - back up pre-amp -
bought it 3 months ago.
Seal Tight Equiptment Case: Tounge and groove continuous O-Ring system makes
the case water, dust and air tight. The case is filled with a high-density
cubed foam allowing for customizing. The case has a four-latch system.
check it out at:http://www.micsupply.com/caseandracks.htm
New is $90 - looking for $50.00

and the only semi-authorized AUD (some creative pass manipulation
and a back gate run were involved... ;) )tapes when I get home in August... Holler at me after the 9th...

I am interested in contacting tapers from the Chicago area.
I go to shows and sometimes end up with an extra ticket.
If someone would be willing to tape the show and give me a copy of the
recording I would
give them the ticket.
I see shows at venues large and small.
If you are interested please give send me an email.
In the semi-near future I have an extra ticket for the Liz Phair show at the
Metro on
Fri (8/22/03).

Those who recognize the name know these punk legends put on a great live show. Drop me
a line if you are interested in taping them in Portland on the 25th; I can trade you an
excellent DAUD from last year here in Minneapolis.
