I record LP's to tape in the first couple of plays. Analog tape has about the same wear as DAT, only it costs a lot more. A 2500' reel will play for 4 hours, bi-directonally, and a reel like that of 1/4" Quantegy 456 tape is about $20. I figure if the tape is good enoug to have mastered more recordimgs than any other media in history, it ouoght be god enoough for me to listen to. Digital mastering, and CD's are IMO a hoax pulled of by the recording industry on the music buying public. I've seen big Studer desktp mastering decks, 24 or 32 channels go for $15,000, used. A new 24 track digital recorder costs 20% of the price of a new Studer. CDs are far cheaper to produce than LP.' I won't deal with carved up dead vinyl, there is new premium grade vinyl, and it just completely dusts CD's. A year ago I didn't believe this. I thought CD's were the be all, end all of the music sales hill. Not any more. I agree with robert. A given cd shoould not be sounding worse after 5 plays. it sounds like ther is a judgement problem in the purchasing. Both a DAT and analog tape will lose metal particles and degrade with play. not great changes over several weeks, but it will be noticable with time. BTW, I still have 2 DAT deck, and 3 CD burners. keith

I'm leary of running afoul of an artist who hates taping. >I'm not sure I can extract info from people on how to send them >money. And probably other things I haven't thought about. Here's one reason that came to my mind.... The fact that this is "free" - deal - i.e. - we don't charge others for copies, the bands don't charge us money to tape, etc keeps this pure and untouchable. Nobody can sue us, as we aren't it for the money..nor are the traders or collectors. Its all about spreading the historical incident of that live show.... Once you add a fee to it, then its pay to record? how much? Which artists can demand it? Then you will ALWAYS have the taper who will stealth it and we will still have the "free distribution" and the "for-PAY" distribution. I'll bet some of us strip the pay here info and redistribute it freely anyway. I do this to bootlegs all the time....if ANYONE should get money, it should be artist. That point I will agree.... I would be for a band putting a paypal account for 'whatever'. AND as long as it is in the spirit of "shareware" - that would be a FINE IDEA... That way, if you felt you had to throw a few bucks for the show, then you could. Other fans could throw money in there for whatever - a gas fund, new instruments a light equipment improvement/upgrade...the possibilities here are endless and would help the bands. If the bands wish to monetize it, as some have (Phish, SCI, Kimock, The Dead) then you hire someone to make a professional recording of that show, (While, ideally still allowing the same taper access) and sell that product - multitrack, sbd and mic matrix, etc....give us an easy d/l or professionally duplicated product with pictures, etc...There is your 'money for the band'.... Lets not introduce money into our hobby, the fact that is free is what has helped it along. Interested in hearing others perspective on this. ~ Taperachi

From: JBABC0CK@aol.com Subject: Re: Artist reimbursement Date: Mon, 21 Jul 2003 12:32:15 -0400 I would say that your initial trepidation is probably a safe bet. While you might want to find out how to contact small artists or their management to send them copies of your tapes, trying to send them money will probably just get you (or someone: the venue, the artist, the management, etc.) into trouble down the line. If you are inclined to give them more money than just the cost of the ticket, most artists sell product after the show. Buy copies of their CDs dircetly from them and cut out the middle man. That's the best thing you can do for an artist on the road is put money in their pocket. Later when you have listened to the tape you can (hopefully) hunt down their PO Box from their website and send them the tape with more praise and adulation. My 2¢, anyway. j <<From: Neal Copperman <neal@swcp.com> Subject: Artist reimbursement Date: Sat, 19 Jul 2003 16:03:52 -0600 In an age of iTunes and Paypal, it seemed to me that it should be possible to actually directly pay artists some amount of money for their live recordings.  I've been toying with the idea of trying to send $3 to $5 to independent artists that are easy to contact whenever I acquire a live performance recording.  It seems only fair that they should get some compensation for the music I get to enjoy.
