I cannot disagree more strongly with this statement.
Dylan has only gotten stronger in vocals with time
where the Deads vocals are going the opposite way.
Dylan has strong stage pressence and has a very tight
band, the Dead are tight if you define that as an old
ball of string that the cat has bat around the house.
Phil and Friends tight, the Dead not! Dylan is history
man and history will be recorded like it or not. The
only reason I am thinking of hitting some dead shows
is that Dylan is opening and may come out as a guest
with them. I went to shows with Steve Winwood opening
and he blew the Dead away, they need to retire the act
or give Joan Osborne the lead vocals on more songs and
shut that egotistical maniac, BOB WEIR, up. Bob needed
direction, I used to like Bob's stuff. Without Jerry
he has lost his way. Tape Dylan whenever you can!!

THIS IS A REPOST OF MY PREVIOUS POST THAT SOMEHOW
DIDN'T COME OUT IN ANY
LANGUAGE ANY OF US KNOW
>>Okay guys, everyone got that? No taping Bob Dylan
cuz
security will be watching you!>>
Personally, I really don't think Bob Dylan is ever
worth taping. I've been
to plenty of his shows and taped him plenty of times
in the past two decades.
There was a time when he played with the Dead (and/or
opened for the Dead),
and he never had a problem with us tapers. I never
found any of those
recordings to be enjoyable to listen to. Either his
rock band was too loud and his
vocals were too low, or the sound just sucked in
general! He's been doing the
same stuff for years and thinks someone will make
money off his recordings in
some way. Maybe he thinks it will hurt his recording
sales. Or, most probably,
he just thinks he's too damn great a performer, and we
tapers are nothing but
leaches and pieces of shit. In any case, I wouldn't
even give him the
consideration to listen to his performances when he
opens up for the Dead. I'll
just go out to the concession area and hang out till
he's done doing what he
thinks is so great!
I wonder if Dylan will try to stop tapers from taping
him when he comes out
and joins the Dead for a song? He should do the same
thing as was done when he
make a guest appearance with the Dead back in 1994 at
MSG ( believe it was
the Monday show). Namely, his mic was never turned
on! You saw him on stage,
but no one heard him.

Now I do a lot of mastering at 1x and most of you probably are striving for
600x, but I'll quote from a recent HHb Press Release:
=======================
As most CD-R media manufacturers chase the large and lucrative data
recording market, evidence is emerging that high record-speed discs are
failing in standalone audio CD recorders.
Dennis Charney of Pennsylvania pro audio service center NXT Generation
reports "We're seeing an increasing number of audio CD recorders from all
manufacturers with the fault reported as 'does not record'. We check them
out using correctly speed-rated discs and find that they work perfectly.
When we ask the users what type of discs they use, they often reply 'the
same as I always use' but what they don't understand is that most
manufacturers are constantly increasing the speed ratings of their media for
compatibility with the latest high-speed computer drives. Unfortunately,
this means they're often no longer compatible with the 1x drives used in
audio CD recorders."
It's a problem that New Product Development Manager Henry Edwards is also
seeing at HHb Communications in London. "High-speed discs will often set-up
in audio CD recorders and even appear to finalize, but won't replay. What's
more, these discs put an excessive strain on the lower powered lasers of
audio CD recorders which can reduce component life, making it all the more
important that operators use correctly speed-rated discs."
To address this problem, HHb has developed a comprehensive range of
pro-audio optimized CD-R recording media, specifically developed and
extensively tested for use with standalone audio CD recorders and
duplicators. The HHb Professional Recording Media range includes a range of
74 minute, 80 minute, printable and bulk packaged 'silver type' discs, all
rated 1x-24x, and a 'gold type' 1x-8x disc.
"Users need consistently reliable performance at 1x" concludes Charney.
"They should be cautious of using any CD-R disc with a specified speed
rating wider than 1x-24x".
==========================
End quote. Food for thought.
Thanks!

I've been seeing CDRs whose speed rating range _starts_ at 4x or
higher.

Guitar Prodigy Pays Tribute to Blues Greats:
Joe Bonamassa Returns to His Roots in the Year of the Blues
with Blues Deluxe
Bonamassa's first all-blues record honors the legends who inspired and
mentored him.
New York, NY 2003 - After successfully recording two solo albums, mixing
influences of classic rock and blues, guitarist/singer/songwriter Joe =
Bonamassa will
release his first full-blooded blues album, Blues Deluxe on August 26, =
2003. The
CD, a project close to the 26-year-old's heart, marks his contribution =
to 2003 - The
Year of the Blues.
Born on May 8, 1977 (coincidentally Robert Johnson's 66th birthday), =
Bonamassa
caught the attention of some of the world's best blues players while not =
even in his
teens. BB King discovered the young prodigy at 12-years-old, sparking =
the beginning
of his career. Bonamassa would go on to tour with King as well as with =
John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, and many, many others.
So, paying homage to these legends was something Joe thought about long =
and hard. Among those on Blues Deluxe are BB King's "You
Upset Me Baby," Albert Collins' "Left Overs," and John Lee Hooker's =
"Burning Hell." As well, Bonamassa covers songs by Robert Johnson,
Buddy Guy, Elmore James, T-Bone Walker, Freddie King, along with several =
of his own original tracks, making this CD a must for blues
lovers.
Playing guitar since the age of 4, Bonamassa is a virtuosic musician =
with mind-blowing dexterity who doesn't lose sight of the raw passion
that makes blues music what it is. "Woke Up Dreaming," co-written by =
Bonamassa and "Tears In Heaven" collaborator Will Jennings,
exhibits Joe's amazing speed on acoustic guitar, all the while staying =
true to the earthy style of early Delta finger-pickers. The instrumental
Albert Collins' song "Left Overs," highlights Bonamassa's maturity with =
instinctive flourishes that only hint of the pyrotechnics of which he's
capable, while the jaw-dropping solo in the T-Bone Walker-inspired "Long =
Distance Blues" provides an opportunity to let it all hang out.
Buddy Guy's "Man of Many Words" finds Joe giving listeners a lesson in =
country-fried funk.
Bonamassa's throaty, hearty vocals and grounded guitar style show how =
much he's learned from the blues masters. Among echoes of BB
King, Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan are elements that are all his =
own. At critical junctions, Bonamassa launches into unexpected,
body-rocking new scales, riffs with finger-cramping flurry, securing his =
place among fellow young guns like Robert Randolph and Derek
Trucks.
The recording of Blues Deluxe was inspired while Bonamassa was in the =
midst of a two-plus year tour in support of his 2002 release So,
It's Like That (which hit #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart multiple times =
in 2002 and 2003). Fans, immersed in every bluesy note of his
acclaimed live performances, often asked whether a full blues record was =
in the offing. When the tour ended, Bonamassa entered the studio
with producer Bob Held and engineer Gary Tole (David Bowie, Jimmy =
Vaughan, Bon Jovi) and recorded a handful of blues covers to "blow
off steam."
The resulting masters were so compelling that Bonamassa and his label =
decided to finish the record and release Blues Deluxe in time for
the Year of the Blues celebrations.
Joe Bonamassa and Medalist Entertainment are dedicated to supporting =
Blues music. In conjunction with the release of Blues Deluxe, Joe
has joined forces with the Blues Foundation (www.blues.org) to =
participate in the Blues In The Schools program. In celebration of 2003
being the Year of the Blues, Joe will appear at schools across the =
nation this winter to perpetuate the heritage and legacy of Blues music =
to
new generations of music fans.

Have searched the archives and the net and have come up empty on this
one...I've been researching possibly getting back into taping, and I
wanted to start out with the deck, because I already know what I want
for mics and preamps and such...I've been looking at the Core Sound
PDAudio system and can't find a suitable and affordable current PDA
model compatible with it, DAT is too expensive, especially considering
it's on it's way out (it's about $150 more for a PCM-M1 than what I paid
2 years ago, doh!), and I want to get away from MD...so that seems to
leave the Creative Nomad Jukebox 3, which seems to fit every requirement
I want. Oh wait, except for one thing - reviews state you can't monitor
the recording level!!! How do you avoid clipping without being able to
monitor the level? Do I have to get a preamp to make this do-able, and
if so, wouldn't I still need to be able to monitor the levels? Any
information would be appreciated.
