Christopher,
The main difference between the Core Sound preamp and
the Sonic Studios
preamp is price. As far as quality, it seems as from
looking at the
spec's and analysis that the Core Sound preamp is
superior to the Sonic
Studios preamp as far as performance is concerned.
Why the Sonic
Studios preamp is priced $500 hundred dollars higher
than the Core Sound and
doesn't even work as good is beyond me. But Sonic
Studios tends to
overprice all of their stuff anyway. Leonard the
owner of Sonic Studios
has always for some odd reason priced his products a
little on the
expensive side. In my humble opinion I figure that
for the huge difference
in both price and performance the Core Sound seems to
be the way to go.
Not only does the Core Sound preamp cost less, but
technically
according to the spec's it should beat the pants off
of the Sonic Studios
preamp as well.

I'm sorry for making an individual post about this, but I'm in the process
of converting my hi8 masters to DVD. I want to put the best audio possible
with them. I recorded a DAT (csb) of this show but would like to get a dat
clone (or 48khz SHN if you own the DAT but can't clone) of the Schoeps tape
[6-17-99 NYC, NOT the night before 6-16-99]. I know this was recorded and
have seen some copies on CDR but I need a dat clone (preferred) or 48k SHN.
If you can help me out, I can trade you something from my list (I have a ton
fo pavement and other artists, on video and CDR) or send you a copy of the
finished DVD.
I'm also looking for two Tori Amos shows, again on DAT; 29 june 98
Philadelphia and 23 november 1998 Bethlehem. Same story as with the
Pavement shows, only I've never seen these circulating.
E-mail me if you can help, slowdivingblue@hotmail.com

Not to start a war here, but I'd be naturally suspicious
of any study done by a manufacturer or supplier who then
announces in the same breath the creation of the media
they want to sell you....

Brought up:
perhaps its time to check out newer burners. My liteon 52X burns
flawless
discs in 2 1/2 minutes.
Now I do a lot of mastering at 1x and most of you probably are striving
for
600x, but I'll quote from a recent HHb Press Release:
=======================
As most CD-R media manufacturers chase the large and lucrative data
recording market, evidence is emerging that high record-speed discs are
failing in standalone audio CD recorders.
Dennis Charney of Pennsylvania pro audio service center NXT Generation
reports "We're seeing an increasing number of audio CD recorders from
all
manufacturers with the fault reported as 'does not record'. We check
them
out using correctly speed-rated discs and find that they work
perfectly.
When we ask the users what type of discs they use, they often reply
'the
same as I always use' but what they don't understand is that most
manufacturers are constantly increasing the speed ratings of their
media for
compatibility with the latest high-speed computer drives.
Unfortunately,
this means they're often no longer compatible with the 1x drives used
in
audio CD recorders."
It's a problem that New Product Development Manager Henry Edwards is
also
seeing at HHb Communications in London. "High-speed discs will often
set-up
in audio CD recorders and even appear to finalize, but won't replay.
What's
more, these discs put an excessive strain on the lower powered lasers
of
audio CD recorders which can reduce component life, making it all the
more
important that operators use correctly speed-rated discs."
To address this problem, HHb has developed a comprehensive range of
pro-audio optimized CD-R recording media, specifically developed and
extensively tested for use with standalone audio CD recorders and
duplicators. The HHb Professional Recording Media range includes a
range of
74 minute, 80 minute, printable and bulk packaged 'silver type' discs,
all
rated 1x-24x, and a 'gold type' 1x-8x disc.
"Users need consistently reliable performance at 1x" concludes Charney.
"They should be cautious of using any CD-R disc with a specified speed
rating wider than 1x-24x".
==========================
End quote. Food for thought.
Thanks!

Was wondering how much better pluging into an M1 would be, compared to a
sony minidv(TRV18). Currently the mics in question are sonic studios w/
batter box. The show will be a somewhat loud metal/bassy show. are there any
major advantages of using the m1 over the minidv.

Hey all... I'm wondering if anyone plans on running a sturdy rig on a sturdy
stand for the Blues and Brews Fest on Sept. 12-14 and would allow me to
clamp on? I'm flying out from Minneapolis and hate to bring my Bogen stand
on the airplane if I don't have to. Not sure if this event is generally
saturated with taper's or not? I'm also planning on the Karl Denson show at
Sheridan Opera House on Sunday night after the Festival. Thanks all....

Hi everybody... anyone know if a car charger exists to charge 6volt and/or
12 volt batteries? I'm hitting a multi-day festival soon and will be camping
so I'll need to charge my battery/ies somehow. Any ideas or recommendations?
Thanks all... Steve

As I mentioned in a previous post, I was able to tape the Toronto stop on
the tour. Taped on a mic stand Microtech Gefell Caps > Microtech Gefell SMS
2000 bodies > Edirol UA5 (digi-mod out) > Sony PCM-M1. Came out pretty
good.
I am doing B+Ps for the show. Since I expect a large amount of replies I
will be able to take only the first 20 responses and I'd prefer to burn the
disc(1) as data in shn format. This will make my life easier, and seems to
be preferred by a lot of traders these days.
