On one popular Sony camera I tested, the difference > between "adequate level" and "badly distorted" was very slight; ie, > the camera had no dynamic range..... Unfortunately in Gary Davis' post are a number of wrong facts....first, miniDV's audio portion doesn't have any compression. It's 48khz 16 bit audio. It is true that all the cheap cameras have lousy preamps, but the Canon xl1 is no exception! When he writes about 'brickwalling' audio he really doesn't understand what proper gain structure is. Generally it is better not to run levels to hot on these cameras mostly because their metering is quite pathetic and it really helps being on the safe side. There is also mentioning that: > if you're in a position to plug a soundboard into > a miniDV camera, if you can arrange so there's no overload (proper > attenuators or whatever), the compression can actually help. Many > badly mixed soundboard can be saved by adding heavy > compression, and as a bonus, it will bring up the volume of the > audience between songs. That's quite a statement and needless to say completely off in every regard. Not only does miniDV record uncompressed, the notion that badly mixed audio can be saved by compression is absolutely nonsense. > Finally, I recommend ALWAYS using the "12-bit" audio on > camcorders, because this makes it possible to add a second audio > track. Well, using 12bit audio is a big 'no no', simply because it sucks. What's 4 channels helping if all of them sound lousy? Any good? pro/cons?" I've done plenty of recording with the Sound professionals "Slimline" AT853 based mic's. I started with the Hypercard heads and have used them more than the other heads. Great flat response and the hypercard pattern excels at leaving ambient crowd noise out. I generally tape with them in grill cloth sleeves mounted on the sides of a black baseball cap or in situations requiring even greater stealth, velcroed onto the inside edges of the collatrs on a black open necked collared short. The response is not as neutral or as smooth as the Neumann KM184's I was running on a stand for awhile but IMHO they're the best stealth mic's out there in the sub $500 price range. I don't think there's really anything noticeably better until you get into the pricey little DPA's. I have used my sub-cardioid heads only twice, both times when I had to record at closer range and although they offered a slightly fatter sound and broader, deeper soundstage, ambient crowd noise is more of an issue. In quiet venue where you can get positioend in the sweet spot the subcard's offer the best of both worlds but more often than not I'm back closer to the soundboard and find the hypercard's to excel. Also worth noting is that Chris Carfagno of Sound Professionals is a great vendor to deal with. I've had occasional customization requests, a need to return/exchange and any number of technical questions - he was always prompt and efficient when I dealt with him or his staff and the build quality is solid. This is a two point mic with two patterns (45=B0 and 90=B0). I will also add a stand with it. Its not a super stable as the bogen stands, but it will work. All you need is a MD or DAT deck to start taping. Comes with origonal case, windscreen, mic clip, mini-tripod, and 1/8" inch stereo cable extender (20 ft). $100 Thanks, John Jewett jjjewett@syr.edu ------------------------------ From: jjjewett Subject: FS: Mindprint Di-Port 24-Bit preamp/ADC/DAC Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2003 16:32:56 -0400 Mindprint Di-Port: $200 Purchased new in 9-02. Its a two-channel 24-bit preamp/ADC/DAC. It has an analog in (RCA, 1/4", or XLR w/48V phantom power and preamp), digital in through coax and optical. monitor out through RCA and headphone jack, DAC which will lock to any word clock, coax and optical outs. Also a 1/4" headphone jack with good headphone amp (drives my akg501's and senn. hd280's nicely). For $200 this is really a steal. It has served as my preamp, 24-bit A/D, and 24-bit D/A so everyone that wants to listen to 24-bit files, you need a 24-bit D/A to hear the extra 8 bits. This unit is AC powered though. I have had success using it in the field with a Vector DC/AC pocket inverter which I got for $30 new. Comes with original manual, original box, and wall wart I purchased from rat-shack.
