I stand by my statements, which were based on a number of
consumer miniDV camcorders I have used. I don't know what Karl
bases his statements on.
For the record, the "compression" I refer to is analog compression
of the audio dynamic range (ie, automatic level), not digital bit
reduction. The compression I'm referring to is *intended* to change
the sound, whereas digital bit compression (ie, MP3, Digital Dolby)
is not.

The reason that audio (gain) compression can help badly mixed
soundboards is simple: If some of the instruments/vocals are too
loud, and some are too soft, compressing the audio so that
everything is the same volume will correct this! Of course,
compressing the mixed signal can't make everything the same
volume at the same time, so it's not a perfect solution, but I've been
surprised by how well it can work.

Hi there,
This is a perhaps naive request from someone who does not actually have DAT
Recorder or any shows to trade, but here goes.
Will anyone on this mailing list be attending (and recording) any of Evan
Dando's Australian Tour shows in the coming days?
Friday, 1st August @ Prince of Wales in Melbourne
Saturday, 2nd August @ Hi-Fi Bar in Melbourne
Monday, 4th August @ The Zoo in Brisbane
Tuesday, 5th August @ The Metro in Sydney
----
I am also a fan of the support act, 'The Givegoods', who are playing at each
show on the Tour also.
If anyone is going to be there, and recording, I would be most interested if
you were kind enough to consider some sort of deal, for blanks & postage for
any / all of the above mentioned gigs. I know it is not much of a deal for
the Taper, but I would be most appreciative and would like to start my
collection one way or another.
Regards and thanks for the space...please feel free to contact me off-list
if you prefer.
Adam

I'm looking to buy a used/refurbished D8 preferrably with a 7 pin
input/output cable. I found someone selling one with 130 hours on the
heads that had it sent in to Pro Digital to have everything cleaned and
one of the glide block posts reglued. My questions is: Is 130 hours of
use worth buying or should I look for a rig with less use but probably
more expensive?
Thanks

I know there are a few Over the Rhine fans on this list, so I thought
I'd pass this along. Keep in mind that their label is anti-taping, but the
band is not. You can stealth with a clear conscience ;-) Have plenty of
OtR to trade for any of these special occasions. Ragan

Don't Cancel, Block Noise for Better Sound!**
Noise canceling headphones can be great on a noisy train or bus, but they
won't block out the screaming kid sitting behind you, or that moron on the
cell phone. If you like listening to music on the go, but hate all the
distracting noises, we've got a solution for you. It's a new in-ear set of
headphones, modeled after the ones Madonna and Bruce use on stage.
Surprisingly affordable, these could be the best headphones since the
invention of electrostatic plates!

I got a pair of AT853Rx that I run into a Sonosax SX-M2. The SP versions
handle slightly less max dBs, the Rxs 138dB max. The output in power from
the stock AT batt box is less than 5V. I have no idea about Chris' batt
boxes but the AT8511 power module puts out about 8V when hooked to a 48V
phantom supply (Rx version). They are what Owen said, the best sub $500
stealth mics around. They are kind of too big to clip to glasses and the
omnis are useless as I used them and got major thumping in a nightclub
setting (Supergrass, Showbox, Seattle). The Cards and Hypers are nice.
They are better at handling crowd noise than a CSB-O or CSC. I think they
are nicer too in terms of transient details than the CSB-O.
Great mics for the price. I own both DPA 4061s and AT853Rxs to this date
and love them both!

These guys are one of the best non-jammy jam bands around I have seen
in a while. They are from Rochester NY and will be making waves
before too long. The recording is stunning despite the shortcommings of the
room and PA.

I've never tried taping with an ALD but thought I might give it a go.
Are they generally easy to get at public facilities-- ie, handed to anyone
who asks for one? Am I better off buying my own? Any general tips
appreciated, off list if you prefer.
Thanks,
