Subject: finding the "source" of recent PCM-M1 recording woes / EAWS

Hey people,
I use a PCM-M1 (purchased in Nov 1999) and Sonic Studios DS6L (I think that's
the model - purchased in Nov 1998) to record stealth-mode at "small" clubs,
preferably 500 and under. Usually my results are really ace.
Recent masters (Calla and Even As We Speak) from 2003 have some noise that
sounds like static or "scratching" - I think this is from either adjusting the
recording level and/or removing my recorder from my jacket interior pocket to
confirm that the deck is still recording (similar to a babysitter occasionally
checking on a baby in a crib to confirm that the baby is still
sleeping/breathing normally & healthily). I have used this recording "technique" for the
past few years, and have never had any type of this noise on my masters. This
isn't diginoise, because you can still hear the recorded music "beneath" the
static/scratching sounds.
What has caused this? Other than ceasing from adjusting or touching my deck
while it's recording, is there anything else I can do to avoid these noise
issues in the future?
And for that matter, did anybody else record Calla (late May - Saturday night
- 2003) or Even As We Speak (July 12, 2003) at Bottom of the Hill? I
definitely would appreciate a secondary source. I have loads of Even As We Speak gigs
(Australia, 1987-1992), all first generation cassette from Sony 959/D6 or D3
masters that would be nice trade fodder, especially since Even As We Speak's
2003 incarnation is rather wretchedly bad.
And of course, always in search of Even As We Speak recordings that I lack...
cheers
Mike

bwt: New Order 7-16-98 Apollo, Manchester 1-track CDR: their first gig since
1993! Steve and Gillian were almost ready to skip the gig just minutes before
the band were to come onstage! This special gig contains New Order's debut of
"Guilty Partner" and final performance of "Run" and "In a Lonely Place"!
Source for all songs except IALP is D6 & AT9400 mics, to CDR to DAT to CDR; IALP
source is DAT (D7) and a microphone that can be worn as a necklace or clipped (I
don't know the brand/model but I think this is a "common" microphone)...

Does anyone have any Janis Joplin boots they would be willing to trade?
Thanks.

Can you in theory or reality transmit SPDIF digital audio using a Radio
Shack Wireless Audio/Video Signal Sender (150-2572)?
