From: "da9ve stovall" <da9ve@geek.com> Subject: ISO Flaming Lips Indy, 5 Aug Date: Wed, 6 Aug 2003 07:16:54 -0700 Sorry for the whine everybody, but while taping the Flaming Lips last night in Indy, my DAT quit for no apparent reason in the middle of the show. I'd love to find out if anyone else was taping and would be willing to trade me for a copy of the complete show (or at least ~ the second half). muchas thankias, da9ve BWT: Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Indianapolis, 20-July-2003, CSC->D8, 100 minutes, on CD-R
From: "James Ballen" <ballenjames@hotmail.com> Subject: FS: Panasonic SV-3800 w/recent work Date: Wed, 06 Aug 2003 10:42:40 -0700 hey datheads... I'm still selling my SV-3800, due to a couple people flaking out on the deal. I am motivated to sell since I have been unemployed for a month now, and I haven't used the Panasonic even once during that time. Never had a problem with this unit. It is in great cosmetic shape. I have pictures I can send to you. Got ~$300 worth of work done to it in March 2003...has about 5 hours on it since the work was done. Work included: -NEW head rotor -Replaced all brakes including reverse -Adjusted back tension arm and reel tension -Added grease guard modification (a Panasonic "upgrade") -Added reverse play brake modification (a Panasonic "upgrade") -Full mechanical and electronic alignment It is in great shape all around. Comes w/infared remote. Analog, AES/EBU, optical, and coax IN's and OUT's Please inquire with any questions, I'm happy to talk w/you about it. Asking $425/OBO but like I said, I'm motivated to sell, so all reasonable offers considered. I know these go cheaper than this on E*ay, but none of those ones have all the work done to them that this one does. Thanks for the space! -James in Berkeley _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Is there a straightforward way to >do this with a 2-track editing program such as Cool Edit 2000, or should= I >go to a multitrack program? > >Thanks, > --=20 Mark Mayhle mark@mayhle.com Hi Mark I have a lot of experience with CoolEdit 2000, if you already have = CoolEdit 2000 just start it up. Press <F12>, and you're in multitrack mode. Press <F12> = again and you're back to single file mode. I am assuming you have a 2 track concert recording or other material for = which you cannot get the people back in the studio and redo something..... Loading your file to be edited in single file mode, you will mark the = section of the good chorus, leaving some second before and after, just save the = selection. Now close the file. Press <F12>, and for the first (upper track) load the= entire file you will edit. Focus on the bad chorus, and add the saved chorus in the = track just below, use the zoom funtion to place the beginning of the good chorus = perfectly aligned with the beginning of the bad chorus in the track above. When the= upper and lower files are adjusted so that the beginning of the part you need is in= line, you then: Cut the first file in half roughly in the middle of the bad chorus. Move = the right part further right (or left) until it lines up perfectly where you want = to exit the good chrosu and go back into the rest of the material. When happy that both ends of the file on top is aligned perfectly with = the good chorus, it is time to fade out the bad chorus, not cut, but fade fapidly,= while- covering the same screen real estate, making a fade-in of the good chorus= below, repeat this procedure and the other end, although here you will fade-in = the rest of the material, and fade-out the good chorus. Audition what you do, frequently, make saves when you are happy, if = unhappy either fix it or go back to an earlier save. When you are all done you make a mixdown to 2 tracks which will then = replace your raw material. You may choose to keep the original (or leave it on it original= media) for the time being but you can erase the good chorus on file, if you need to = redo this just do it from the top. The procedure above should work using other software too, although I will= not be familiar with it in practical use. Essentially this is how you remix a song when only the finished master is= placed on your desk (or when you do oldschool guerilla style remixing of someone = elses song ;) Nowaways for a pro remix you get a multitrack and can use single tracks = of the material the band recorded. One of the first songs I remember doing this = was the Fame 90 remix of David Bowie 1975 hit Fame (a song he co-did with Carlos = Alomar hiw guitarist at the timne and John Lennon no less). This song was on the = Pretty Woman soundtrack I believe, and there was also some Queen Latifah version, and = so on. There are bound to be others before that but that is the one I remember. I hope this works out for you. -breiler

I've been running live music into my computer, into Sonic Foundry CD Architect, which low and behold I can't find my cd for now that my hard drive crashed and had to be rebuilt. I downloaded Pro Tools and I'm having some success. It doesn't like my audio card, but it makes a decent digital copy. But I'm wondering, is anyone aware of anything that is relatively low cost that functions like CD Architect did? That is EASY? Thanks! Date: Wed, 6 Aug 2003 21:05:13 -0400 Hello, I am planning to buy a new portable DAT recorder soon and have been looking around for what is available. It seems to me there are two choices a Sony PCM-M1 around 800 bucks or a Tascam DA-P1 for almost twice as much. So I was hoping you could tell me if the extra money is worth it for the Tascam or if there are any other options?? Thanks for your help houleo

From: Mike Holden <michaeljholden@yahoo.com> Subject: Looking for tapers in DC area Date: Wed, 6 Aug 2003 19:51:56 -0700 (PDT) I'm a musician from the DC area and I started a Yahoo Group at www.arlingtonmusicscene.com a couple years ago that now has close to 600 members. The group consists mostly of musicians from the Arlington/DC area and we're looking for tapers who would be into taping shows by bands from our area and helping us spread the music to more people. If this is something you'd be into, please let me know. I'd be willing to get people into shows free and cover some of the tape costs, as long as people could get more of our shows into circulation for people to download and trade. From: Philippe Legault <p_inkfloyd@softhome.net> Subject: Dat2wav help - read errors Reply-to: p_legaul@mindless.com Date: Thu, 07 Aug 2003 01:16:49 -0400 Hello all, I've been using Dat2Wav 1.2 for some time now and I have a few problems nowadays... Earlier this week I created a DAT using the Wav2Dat feature and it worked fine and played fine too. I wanted to listen to it again today and I have the following problem: I get a "leadin read audio block failed" error (or something close to that) EVERYTIME I try to listen to that DAT or any DAT for that matter. This drive has been replaced not too long ago because the previous one kept telling me it had errors in the left/right channel and that at very small intervals (i.e. my screen was flooded with errors but the WAV file came out perfectly). So I have a bunch of problems with Dat2Wav and absolutely no solutions... I have a hard time believing it's the actual drive dying on me! Thanks, Phil
