Subject: Re: taping at Stephen's Talkhouse Date: Sun, 10 Aug 2003 10:21:19 -0400 Hi- I've taped Jefferson Starship and Merl Saunders there a few times and there were no problems at all. Granted, this was a few years ago but, I doubt things have changed. I suggest very HIGHLY that you buy table tickets if they are still available and get there as soon as the doors open so you can get the best table spot. If you have never been there before, it is a very small place... VERY SMALL! Keep your mic stand out of the way of the other patrons. Don't rely on previous concerts of theirs you were allowed to tape but rather, make sure ahead of time with the band that it is ok (bringing a printout of the e-mail is helpful). When you get in, ask the staff if they have any special area they would PREFER (not "allow" - rememeber, always use jedi mind tricks when dealing with venue staff) you set up... There were some times I was allowed to set up at the table, some times I had to set up next to the board and once I was allowed to set up right in the center of the floor. Again, this is a very small place so pick your spot carefully to avoid pissing off other patrons and staff, having your gear trampled and having morons having a conversation in front of your mic's... Oh, and before you even set up your gear, buy a drink at the bar and give the bartender a huge tip and try to make sure they notice it's a big tip! Not only will it help you during the show to get a little more preference at getting a drink before others waiting so you don't have to leave your gear unattended too long (but again, it's such a small place your gear can't really be out of eye's view anyhow) but there's a good chance it will also help you get nicer treatment from the other staff... Good luck!! M ------------------------------ From: Mike G. Subject: Jedi Mind Tricks... Date: Sun, 10 Aug 2003 10:35:38 -0400 I referred to this in my response to the guy who asked about taping at Stephen's Talkhouse but I just wanted to throw this out there to everyone... Most people, especially security guards who are not used to making decisions and are usually so scattered at shows, don't like to think. So, if you ask them a question that allows them to answer, "Yes" or "No," the answer will almost always be a resounding, "NO!" Instead ask open ended questions, make statements that imply they don't have the option of saying no or give them 2 options from which to choose that are both in your favor: "Should I set up here or there?" instead of "Can I set up?" or, even better: "I'll set my stuff up over here." instead of "Where should I set my stuff up?" "I'm going through here and will be right back." instead of "Can I go through here?" "I'm allowed to tape." instead of "Am I allowed to tape?" "This is my seat." instead of "Is this my seat?" Semantics is a wonderful thing. The way you phrase a sentence can completly change the answer! And if you give them the answer in your question, you allow them to answer in your favor without any thinking on their part... Remember, it's always easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission... ;> Hope this helps some of you... Date: Sun, 10 Aug 2003 22:44:44 -0400 I'd like to tape some net-casts when I'm not at my computer without having to leave my computer on all day. I've taped some things via www.totalrecorder.com and this has a feature like a vcr so that I can program it to begin & end recording something that I'm streaming, but it doesn't have the option to turn the computer off when it's done. Anybody here know a way to do that (without getting one of those radio shack timers used to turn on/off lamps) ? I found a couple things via shareware but they didn't really work. thanks, Erik ------------------------------ From: "Nugz4Hampton" Subject: DATs for a newbie Date: Sun, 10 Aug 2003 23:39:07 -0400 Still have some DATs left to get rid of.
