I just wanted to update those of you who have yet to recieve your copies. I left for vacation on August 3rd, and just returned last night (August 10th). I managed to send out 2 on August 2nd as these were the first recieved as of that date. When I returned yesterday, there were 5 in my mailbox, which I completed I mailed later in the evening. Since we had the mailed held at the post office for the week we were gone, I will get to the others within a day or 2. Thanks for you patience Mitchell

If he had learned to say no, he might still be alive today and a much better player than he was when he went out. As far as smashing decks, that goes too far and is not legal. >Sorry to be so negative here about Dylan, but his not allowing the release of >the songs he choose to come on stage and join the band in, is just beyond any >explanation. Why did the Dead ever invite this clown to open up for them? >I'm surprised Bob Dylan does not have his own secret "Taper Police" to wander >through the taper sections and smash decks that are recording him when he's >playing with the Dead as well! Dylan is not a clown and the fact that the current members of the Dead and certainly many respected musicians and fans the world over feel that he deserves respect show that he is not a clown. Musicians should have the right to determine what happens to their music, even in collaboration, at least while they are alive (this whole thing of lawsuits amongst estates is a little over the top). Dylan has always been seen as a little eccentric, but if you see him with the Dead or anywhere else, just sit back and enjoy the music for what it is and don't worry so much about taping everything. Since you seem not to enjoy Dylan and respect him, I can't understand why you want to record him in the first place! A DAT machine does not come with a license to tape every single musical event that you attend. Edwin -- Edwin Hurwitz Boulder CO http://www.indra.com/~edwin

From: Liam Sean Kennedy <liam@fedney.org> Subject: Re: Tapers Just Being A ...head! Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2003 11:24:03 -0400 For what its worth, taping of the Dylan/Dead sets in 1987 was stealth. The = people here who have loudly said otherwise here have a faulty memory -- he=20 has been consistent about disallowing taping at all planned performances=20 with the GD and for his own gigs. I don't see what the big deal is, Dylan is one of many people who don't=20 allow taping and contrary to rumor he is not one of the hardest to stealth. = In some ways such shows are more pleasant to tape because your gear is more = likely to get trashed (or stolen) in the taper section than by a security=20 goon... and in the latter case you have legal recourse. But such shows=20 exist and there isn't much more to be said about it. As far as the original subject "just being a...", the performer is well=20 paid because he is different than the "establishment" and he has always=20 bucked trends. He is not paid to be the GD and probably has more in common = with Eminem. ;-) The subject unfortunately befits some tapers, as well as=20 other (talkative) audience members, and nobody is willing to pay us to be=20 such. If you aren't allowed to tape and you get busted stealthing, insist=20 on your legal rights firmly, but take being shut-down calmly. A=20 controversial performer can be a cool thing... a controversial stealth=20 taper just does not make sense. Se=E1n

I know you can do this with Windows XP and "standby" mode if your PC supports it (in standby mode the PC draws only enough power to keep the RAM active, and the hard disks, monitor, and fans all shut off). First, set the power management settings in the Control Panel to put the PC into standby mode after a certain period of inactivity. Then create a "scheduled task" in the Control Panel to start Total Recorder at a particular time. Be sure to set the advanced option to "wake the computer to run this task". You may have to configure login and password information for the task to get it to work. If this is all done correctly, the PC should go into standby mode when it's not being used, yet wake itself up temporarily for scheduled recording. It should be noted that there might be other processes running on your computer which prevent it from ever going into standby mode, but that's a whole other subject. Michael

The first half came out blank and the second half came out ok. Schoeps MK4V/CMBI-M1. When the tape is going from nothing to signal my deck reports massive errors and becomes inaudible with loads of distortion. It settles out eventually. Anyone have any ideas? I am gonna send deck down to Prodigital for a check up/cleaning. If anyone taped the show please contact me off list. I would really appreciate it, especially the fella i stopped at the crosswalk to grovel from. Thank you in advance. john

From: "MattB" <matt@mattb.net> Subject: Re: DAT-heads Digest #828 Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2003 22:20:24 -0600 Not sure if it will work on all Windows version, but for WinNT and 2k (and bet XP) I've used a handy tool that is part of the Windows NT resource kit tools available free from MS. Not sure if you can do this yourself, but of you are somewhat PC savvy: It's called shutdown.exe and you can run it from a command prompt. I've used it before to reboot servers in the middle of the night. You just schedule to run it with some command line options ( like /c to close all running apps) and it will do the trick. You could just schedule it for after you recording is done. Also, I just search CNet's download archive (www.download.com) for the word shutdown and got a ton of free downloads. I bet something there would do the trick too (and maybe even schedule it's self).
