directly. I can email my datlist - loads of indie/alt/britpop/etc., plus I
have a killer collection of Heavenly/Talulah Gosh audience recordings (all are
non-DAT/non-digital sources)... after all, Amelia Fletcher is one of the 500 who
own the original vinyl of Tigermilk or whatever that album is called!

Christian asked about the Jayhawks taping policy.
I saw them a month or so ago here in Seattle. The previous 4 times I had
seen them we either scored a sbd patch or could set up a mic stand.
At the show last month we were told that their manager said no taping of any
kind.
The guys in the band didn't seem to care, but the manager had told the venue
employees not to allow any equipment in.
I'd say be prepared to stealth.

From what I have heard, their official policy is "NO TAPING" but their
unofficial policy is don't get caught (and they'd appreciate a copy).

When I asked for a patch last night in Toronto, their sound guy asked what
for. I replied "for personal use" and he said "he'd prefer not". I got the
feeling it was flexible but time was running out and I figured I was sitting
in a decent place for mics anyways so I said thanks and split. I bet you
get a patch if you think of something better than the stupid "for personal
use" (which is probably what a bootlegger would say).

...they don't work. The 1/8" plug on my CSBs (purch. Nov 2001) has a rather
wide barrel that is too large to completely fit into the recessed input on
the Jukebox. It's hard to explain but if you have one, you'll see what I
mean. It's really just a combo of the the 2 designs. I've only had it
happen on the Jukebox, but at the same time, every other 1/8" plug I tested
on the Jukebox did make a proper connection.
I'm sorry to say it took me 2 failed attempts to figure it out.
First time I used line in, without gain (which admittedly was dumb because
the CSBs purposely have low output for brickwalling Sony DAT preamps).
Levels were low but I'd heard that the JB3 preamp wasn't so great so I
figured I'd go line in and boost it later. The sound was crappy and thin
but I thought it might be some side effect of having to apply ridiculous
amplitude adjustment.
Second time, thought I'd avoid problem #1 by using the JB3 preamp to hit
some decent levels. Got great levels. Recording sounds like shit. I can
duplicate the sound by taking a source thru 1/8" and pulling it out partway.
A little more playing around revealed something very strange happening to
the sound because of the partial insertion. I'm not quite sure what
contacts are made on a partial insertion but I can hear both mics in both
channels and a paste invert of one channel perfectly cancels out the other
channel - in other words, mono. But not nice sounding mono.
The solution - change the plug on the CSBs (don't much care for that cheezy
gold crap anyways). And yeah...I'm one of those people who would respond to
this by saying "you should have tested it out" so no need ;)
Now if someone can tell me how to decode my lifeless mono recording back
into a real one, that would be useful information - I really wanted those
shows! (SARS concert in Toronto w/Kathleen Edwards, Flaming Lips, Guess Who,
Rush, AC/DC, Stones and then Jayhawks/Kathleen Edwards at Molson
Amphitheatre...in case any else did get them)
