M ------------------------------ From: "Wayne Ellis" Subject: D100 & Sony Mic Brick-walling Reply-To: Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2003 09:53:20 +0100 I've been using a Sony MS907 mic for recording in places where I can strap the mic to a wall or something similar. A while ago I made a recording that had brickwalling on it - its the first time this has happened and didn't please me greatly. The Sony mic doesn't seem to want to drive the line-in setting on the DAT, so I was considering building a couple of fixed attenuator pads into a phono socket to add in circuit 'as required' so it doesn't overload the preamp. The question is - is a simple L-pad attenuator design good enough for the job or should I use something a bit more exotic ? thanks Wayne ------------------------------ From: "Tatina, Bill" Subject: iso: APC 2003 Canada/Europe Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2003 08:05:00 -0700 tons to trade: ask for my dvd/cdr list http://www.aperfectcircle.com/ A Perfect Circle=20 Wed 08/27/03 Vancouver,BC=20 Fri 08/29/03 Edmonton, AB Jubilee Auditorium =20 Sat 08/30/03 Calgary, AB MacEwan Hall =20 Mon 09/01/03 Winnipeg, MB Burton Cummings Th. Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2003 12:18:48 -0400 Hello Chris, You said you have a 2 channel recording with a direct feed on one side and a audience Mic on the other. This presents a difficult scenario for mastering. First I would determine if both channels are in phase wiht each other. Usually you would listen for instablity in the mids and highs. Second, I would decide which channel has the best overall mix instrument wise barring EQ problems. If I would take a stab at it without listening to it I might lean towards the audience mic (FOH mic). If for some reason there is to much noise or the eq is so out there it is not fixable then I would use the in line feed channel. In either case I would use one of the two and master that one channel too two channels. Then if the other side had anything to offer like say audience cheer I might cross fade it in. Also, I would try to match the EQ of the secondary choice to the primary and then perhaps decide if the secondary has something (EQ wise) to offer the primary choice. For example; perhaps the audience mic has a better mid range? After matching the two listen to the eq of each channel seperately. I hope this helps. If this is an original recording of your music or you have permission from the artist you may want to take it to a premastering engineer. Sincerely, Glen E Peladeau LILMS http://temp.adpebs.com/likeitlivemusic/index.html ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
