Digital sources: DAT vs. CD Reply-to: jlutch@altairinc.com Date: Fri, 5 Sep 2003 21:38:40 -0700 Just a fair warning that a lot of people on this list would probably take exception to the fact that a person can hear a difference in sound from digital cables. There would have to be an extreme amount of jitter to make the difference from the two digi outs sound different, I doubt that both devices are operating that out-of-spec, theres prob. something youre missing it is a fact that the dat format is indeed superior to cd (all bits being equal), due to the higher allowable sample rate. I would start by comparing the integrity of the two sources. How was the copy generated? thru a possibly resampling signal path? Has there been any testwork done on the bit-accuracy of the cd digital out, or is it assumed? A good way to do it would be to route the two signals to a soundcard, record, and compare them, you may find that the data itself is different, ruling out jitter as your problem.

I have a Tascam DA 20 MK II also, and a Sony DTC 60-ES. The sony is the one I have hooked up to use for everyday listening. IMO, my Sony DAT deck sound vastly better than my CD player. I take it even further to Analog Reel to Reel. I've recorded from my computer digital sound card to a ART DI/O A>D, D>A converter, and convert my shows from Digital back to Analog on a Teac X-1000 Reel to Reel. One big problem with doing this is good 10.5" reels of tape are expensive. A reel of Quantegy 456 in quantities of 10 or more reels is about $21. That's a 2500' reel, which gives a recording time of close to 4.5 hour 3 3/4 ips. Of all the music sources I've ever heard, I think the reel to reel is the best sounding. Unfortunately, they are virtually all out of production. I wish I had some solution on the jitter problem to share with you. Keith

I suppose if anyone out there wants to get rid of a pair of those mics too, that would be cool. I am planning on purchasing the microphones and battery module on soundprofessionals.com Thanks! Ketan

Anyone hear and have an opinion on the DPA 4011 series microphones? > >The best cardioid mics available. >Seth > Hmm... Strong opinion! I'd say there are a couple of other cardioid mics out there that could give those 4011's a run for there money. . . . . . . . Hmm lets see how bout the DPA 4022's or the 4023's compacts. %^) It's all down hill from there. No doubt DPA makes the best card mics around! 4011, 4022, and 4023 all have the same capsule. Consider the compacts if your ever in the need of a low profile or stealth rig. Cost you a bit more, but leaves you more overall options. If you have a set application and the 4011's fit it and are priced right then you can't go wrong there either. From: Tom McCreadie <mccreadi@xs4all.nl> Subject: Re: Nakamichi CM300 microphones and DPA 4011 microphones Date: Sat, 06 Sep 2003 11:01:50 +0200 Rick in #854: > 1. Who manufactured the CM300 Nak mics? I believe the mics were oem'd by Primo, who also rebadged them for other Japanese manufacturers. For example the Teac ME-120 is the same, and once saw a silver-bodied JVC consumer mic in the UK - forget the model nr. - which looked and sounded the same and could even interchange capsules with the Nak. Primo also manufactured the bigger brother Nak CM-700, with slightly better capsules and phantom powering. I understand this is also available as the Crown CM-700. I've used but don't own the Nak mics. Frankly the CM-300 was OK but so-so...like Gustav Mahler, it was always in grave danger of being taken too seriously <g> Tom

Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2003 17:26:40 -0400 (EDT) As some of you may know, one of the major online DAT merchants has a sale on no-logo, but made by TDK, DC4 60m DDS tapes. Does anyone have recent experience (good or bad) with these? I had heard several years ago to avoid some TDK DATs, but I don't know how reliable to the info was or if it was a specific type. From: "jacob lemberg" <jacoblemberg@hotmail.com> Subject: stealth rig for sale with free d-8 Date: Sat, 06 Sep 2003 19:36:38 -0700 Hi, I have been out of the loop for a while, and have decided to depart with my rig which consists of: One set of dpa heb 4061 mics which terminate in xlr's. two battery boxes (standard and bass roll off). A zefiro inbox( a/d converter/preamp) with the extra jack for connecting to sony 7-pin portables. the other two outlets are optical and a coaxial. This rig was purchased new in the spring of 99 for about $1,400, and has been used no more than twenty times, and is in excellent shape. I will consider all serious/realistic offers, and can e-mail photos to those who are interested. In addition I will throw in a sony d-8 that has seen better days but still records perfectly. It does have issues at times with loading/fast-forwarding and other weird stuff. I will also throw in a few various 7-pin wires, some unprescribed glasses for mounting, a few blank dat tapes, and a handy bag to carry it all in, with lots of pockets. Thanks for your time > jacob _________________________________________________________________ Get a FREE computer virus scan online from McAfee. http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963
