When and where is this fact proven, and by whom? With wide dynamic range program material that is recorded well it is quite easy to make a superior-sounding CD compared to DAT, if the master for the CD was recorded 24-bit and dithered using one of the better dithering schemes (Powr-3, UV22, Meridian etc) It is pretty amazing how much of the sonic depth of 24 bits manages to come through on a CD when care is taken. And both can sound pretty dreadful in the wrong hands as well. -- Rich Mays Sonare Recordings ------------------------------ From: Seth Breidbart Subject: Re: Jitter-Killer? Anything you can put on CD, you can put on dat, so dat is at least as good. 2. dat can hold 48 kHz recordings, CD only 44.1 kHz, so dat can be better. > With wide dynamic range program material that is recorded well it is > quite easy to make a superior-sounding CD compared to DAT, if the > master for the CD was recorded 24-bit and dithered using one of the > better dithering schemes (Powr-3, UV22, Meridian etc) Why not use the same scheme to record to dat? Seth ------------------------------ From: "DRider" Subject: Subject: Re: Nakamichi CM300 microphones Date: Sun, 7 Sep 2003 02:57:35 -0400 Primo also manufactured the bigger brother Nak CM-700, with slightly better capsules and phantom powering. I understand this is also available as the Crown CM-700. I've used but don't own the Nak mics. Frankly the CM-300 was OK but so-so...like Gustav Mahler, it was always in grave danger of being taken too seriously I have to say... I fairly much agree w/ you about the 100's & 300's but I must say I totally love the sound of the 700's!! definitely ~ MORE ~ than just "slightly" better peace D ------------------------------ From: Mexminute@aol.com Subject: Trade Audio Equipment - PLEASE READ Date: Sun, 07 Sep 2003 11:05:38 -0400 I am wondering if anyone out there has an old NAKAMICHI CR-7A analog cassette deck (in great shape) that they would like to part with. I would be willing to trade an AIWI HD-X1 portable dat recorder for it, or would be open to just purchasing it. Please contact me at your earliest convenience! Thanks, Mitchell ------------------------------ From: Subject: Re: Nakamichi CM300 microphones and DPA 4011 microphones Date: Sun, 7 Sep 2003 08:53:14 -0700 >Primo also manufactured the bigger brother Nak CM-700, with slightly better >capsules and phantom powering. Frankly the CM-300 was >OK but so-so...like Gustav Mahler, it was always in grave danger of being >taken too seriously >Tom I would disagree with Tom's comment about how the CM-700 mics are so-called "slightly better" than the CM-300's. Obviously Tom has never used the CM-700's before or he would have never made that comment IMO. Also, the CP-701 or CP-702 caps that the CM-700 mics used were never phantom powered. They ran on a small specialized local battery (6V) but can tolerate a voltage up to 30V. My PS uses 9V cells the power the FET's / CP-701 caps. (mod CM700's) One last correction is that the Crown CM-700's are NOT the same as the Nak CM-700's! This is a common misunderstanding...the Crown 700's are more like the Nak 300's......this has been dragged over and over again on the Oade site over the past years. If you research you specs between the two types then you can clearly see they are no the same. Ever listen to the two??? The Nak 700's smoke the Crown mics hands down. They are NOT the same mics...... I agree the CM300's are over rated at times but are a very good low end mic that has held its own over the years over lower priced condenser mics out there on the market for under $300~$400. The bigger brother mics like the CM700's and CM1000's are some of the best mid level condenser mics ever made for the money IMO. Steven Sank (famous Nak guru in NW state) once told me that the CM1000's are perhaps one of the BEST ever made true condenser mics manufactured and have rivaled some of the best high end German mics.....ever listen to some tapes made with CM1000's????? I thought so.......the Nak 700's and 1000's are not low-end mics as some would perceive. Now the DPA mics....well thats not my area of experience...but I know from listening to many tapes made with these mics that they are in a category of their own! Fantastic to say the least ;-) Just my .02 - Can't let the 700's get a bad rap now can I? Ever listen to a smokin tape Dr. Bob made with his CM701's?? Or a tape by Matt Hiles?? Those mics are the shit man....don't knock them!!! I recorded it on DAT, but I had many screamers/talkers nearby so I am not too happy with the recording I've got. I've checked within the tori-boot community and there doesn't seem to be others that we know of. I'd like to see if there is a better recording around before I get this one transferred, mastered, and circulated. I've got lots of Tori Amos for trade, and can work a trade for some thing else if need be. Thanks in advance. ~Maria *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Maria Aguirre // toriphilemaria@charter.net Boot Trading site: http://boots.freezingthatframe.com *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ ------------------------------ From: "Adrian Fernandes" Subject: Live Show Collection for Sale (at cost) Reply-To: adrianf@cuic.ca Date: Sun, 7 Sep 2003 14:32:15 -0400 I originally posted a list about a month or so ago about stuff I wanted to remove from my collection. Since I am moving in October, I have decided that it was time to part with everything that isn't essential. Julie (who has her list over on etree: db.etree.org/jjjewels) also did the same with her collection. The list on e-tree lists some of the shows below -- I just haven't had a chance to update our list over there just yet (these has taken a bit of time as it stands). We figure that somebody out there might have as eclectic a taste in music and could be interested in the entire lot -- at which point I say make a reasonable offer. Shipping is from Toronto, ON, Canada. If you live nearby, you can pick them up to save on the shipping. Discs are on Spindles in alphabetical and chronological order. I have inlays printed for all of my discs -- Julie only had for some. All we're asking for is the cost of a decent blank CD in Toronto which is about CDN$0.75 a piece after taxes. That's about US$0.53 at the current exchange rates. I would prefer to sell the entire lot as one or break up into a handful of lots depending on what people are interested in. This would be a great way to diversify your collection and add to it lots of stuff that has taken a lot of time to collect over the past five to ten years. The list below contains the artists and number of DISCS (_NOT_ shows) for each. The list can be viewed at: http://www.generationpoponline.com/jjjewels/deletions.htm. It seems that there is a significant difference in quality of my two digital sources, I tested it. Or my digital copies on tape are less than their originals on CD which I doubt ... I'll probably have to go for a high-end DAT-deck on Ebay which hopefully has a better dig out than my current DA-20 Mk II. Even my humble old Aiwa HD-S200 portable seems to sound better (albeit marginally). More suggestions are highly appreciated before I burn 500+ Euros for a Sony DTC 2000 ES or the like. Don't upgrade too much, you'll get addicted ... Jörg. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
