I filmed them a couple of years ago, but I don't know if their policy has changed. Any info on this, public or private is greatly appreciated. Also looking for a good quality No Knife show where they play stuff off "Fire in the City of Automatons". Thanks, Wes Kindtaper@aol.com ------------------------------ From: "Dan Leehr" Subject: Re: PDA recording (Core-Sound) Date: Tue, 9 Sep 2003 23:24:52 -0400 For any real length of recording, you'll need a large CF card or an PC Card. You can get 1GB CF for $100-150. There are also CF microdrives and PC Card Hard drives that will work. I have a 5GB Toshiba PC Card hard drive. I'd recommend an ipaq 3600/3700/3800/3900. if you want wi-fi builtin, get a 5400/5500, but the 3000 series are discontinued and probably a lot cheaper. The PDAudio requires a CF slot. Most pdas have these, but the ipaqs are the only ones that let you get an attachment to use more than one CF card. So you need -ipaq -pdaudio card -storage card -dual CF sleeve or dual PC Card sleeve. Here's a link to the dual PC Card sleeve. Probably the better option, http://www.mobileplanet.com/product.asp?cat%5Fid=101&cat%5Fname=Pocket+P C+Devices&dept%5Fid=3709&pf%5Fid=MP965183&listing=1 Since you can get up to 5GB PC Card hard drives, and it has a large battery built in. My first post to DAT-Heads, but something I know a good deal about. ------------------------------ From: "James Ballen" Subject: Tascam / Nakamichi mics on Ebay Date: Tue, 09 Sep 2003 23:54:09 -0700 Follow the link below if you are interested in checking out or bidding on a near mint pair of Tascam PE-120 condensers... these are the same as the Nakamichi CM-300's. http://tinyurl.com/mu1q thanks for the space, -james _________________________________________________________________ Compare Cable, DSL or Satellite plans: As low as $29.95. https://broadband.msn.com ------------------------------ From: "Greg Lance" Subject: FS: AD 1000 Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2003 06:40:41 -0700 AD 1000 For Sale: *New Word Clock *15 Pin Cable *2 12v Eco Batteries *1 12v Eco Charger Unit is in perfect shape. That's why I recommend this. It's not really feasible to use this for taping with less than 2GB (roughly 3 hours at 16/44). Now, a 2GB CF card will run you $650. You could get two 1GB cards and swap them for half that price. The problem here is the battery life. CF draws less current than the hard drives will, but they're a lot more expensive. With the ipaq and expansion batteries, you'll probably only get 3-5 hours with CF. And considerably less with a microdrive or Toshiba drive. But for under $20, you can buy parts from radioshack for an external pack that'll use C or D rechargables. That'll give you more than enough time. > Definitely a lot cheaper than the 5000 series, in the $200-400 range (the low end for refurbished). The 5000 series include removable 1250mAH batteries. They offer a thicker 2500mAH battery, but you cant use that with any sleeves, so it won't work with PDAudio. The 3600 and 3700 have 950mAH non-removable batteries, and the 3800 and 3900 have 1400mAH non-removables. The 36 and 37 have no SD slot. The others do have SD, but its not fast enough to record this audio anyways. > I trust the attachment works even if the iPAQ has only an SD slot. PDAudio-CF is a CF card. It requires a CF slot, or a PCMCIA slot and a cheap adapter. None of the ipaqs I mentioned have a CF slot built in. You need to buy an add-on sleeve. There are many sleeves. Some with one CF slot (won't do a whole lot of good). Some with two CF slots (better), one with Two PC Card slots (bingo) and a big battery built in. > Which is actually faster, the 206 MHz or 400 MHz models? And does it matter? It's debatable. The first 400MHz (Intel PXA250) models weren't really any faster than the 206MHz ones. But they did draw less power. The newer 400MHz (Intel PXA255) chips are definitely faster, but only found in the ipaq 2210, 5150, 5550, and other new models. The other manufacturers make good devices, but ipaqs are the only ones that can use PDAudio with another CF or PCMCIA card. So unless you want to buy a dozen 512MB SD cards, and swap like crazy, stick with one of these ipaqs. Dan ------------------------------ From: "Ragan Todd" Subject: LA area (Santa Monica) taper needed for Saturday Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2003 17:32:36 +0000 The Violet Burning is planning to play a special show at The Talking Stick Coffee Lounge in Santa Monica this Saturday, September 13. Michael is promising to play any requested songs (except Freebird, of course), so there could be some great oldies thrown in to their usual great set. I'm not familiar with the venue, but the band is taper friendly, and sbd patches are not uncommon. Go hear and tape this great indie rock band. Have lots to trade, thanks! I have the HP 216198-B21 on order; that includes the adapter for CF cards (it has 2 PC Card slots). It has (according to Core Sound's page) 2 100 mAh non-removable batteries, which can be replaced with up to 2200 mAh batteries. (Source for the latter?) (The cheapest place to buy it looks like Amazon.com.) So it looks like the 3800 or 3900 series are the best bet, if only for slightly larger batteries. I went for the 3835, based on price (since this is the only application I'll use it for). Next week: how it all performs. I've just started experimenting with this software. I'm looking for advice on mastering; should I use the normalize or Wave Hammer function (essentially a volume booster) to increase the levels? I am aware of the faults of normalizing with inferior software. Also, how does one eliminate the high-pitched screaming of female fans next to my microphones? Any other mastering advice would be very much appreciated. BWT will be offered when I get some good finished recordings to offer up! Thanks, Matt ------------------------------ From: "Ketan M.
