Several methods:
1) If you can, keep the screaming female fans away.
2) Find a better spot.
3) If necessary, talk to them, offer them a copy if they will quiet down.
4) Move the mics to minimize their impact.
All of that having failed, as it sounds like it has, there aren't too many
options available. One technique I used for a very specific circumstance
eliminated some annoying talking that was predominantly relegated to a
single channel.
1. Identify the section of the recording where the talking/screaming takes
place.
2. Select the section in question, then use the copy from other channel
repair tool.
3. Maintaining the selection, run a pseudo-stereo plugin (I used the
pseudo-stereo setting of the simple delay effect in Sound Forge). The idea
is to mimic the slight delay that arose from the original mic placement.
4. Fix the beginning and end of the selection (if necessary) with the
repair tool. I think I used "interpolation." This is necessary since you
just shifted the entire selected waveform slightly. I understand this may
not be entirely necessary if you take the time to find start and end
selection points right at the center crossover. In any event, the "click"
or "pop" that would otherwise be very evident should be eliminated.
If done correctly, you can pretty well mask the fact that you did anything
at all. However, it can take a bit of work to make it seamless. Tweak the
delay settings so that you don't get a ping-pong effect as you cut in and out.
In the situation I used this technique, it moved the conversation from the
front of the left channel to somewhere behind the recording position. The
talking wasn't eliminated, but muted to a reasonable level. It basically
made a useless master into something you could actually listen to on a CD.
As always, your mileage may vary.

Subject: M-1 Battery Sled Comments

Hello All,
Alas, the two radio shack 4.5v batteries that I've used to power my M1 for
the last few years will no longer hold a charge. Not a bad investment for
$10!
Before I assemble (or try to) this "3 D" sled
(http://members.tripod.com/~groovin/battery.html), I wanted to ask
experienced sled-makers/-users their opinions on the following:
Is there a better way than the one shown in the above link? If so, where
can I find it?
What battery life can I expect (with or without backlight) from this system?
Do you suggest a certain type of rechargeable D cell to use?
Anything else?
Thanks in advance for all your help.
Chris in DC

Removing screaming fans is probably impossible, but it actually is
quite easy to remove high-pitched feedback and also fans
whistling. These sounds generally have a constant (and very
narrow) frequency; the shifting nature we hear is a shift in volume;
not frequency. The trick is once you find the primary frequency,
there are generally harmonics on all the multiples (ie, a 2620 hz
noise will also have sound at 2x, 3x, 4x, etc that number - all must
be notched out).
Low frequency feedback (howling) is much harder.
Some people disagree with my decision to remove accidental
feedback from classic Neil Young shows, etc. Even though it was
"part of the show," it's generally an engineering accident, and
nothing to do with the music, that caused it, so it's really no more
part of the performance then screaming girls. Often, you can hear
music under the feedback which was overlooked before.
And of course, you don't run the notch for the whole show, just
during a very selected part where the feedback occurs!

Hey guys,
this might be of interest here. I also posted it to BTAT.
I saw The Jayhawks a couple of days ago at a small club in Hamburg, Germany.
After reading what some of you had posted in response to my request I wasn't
too optimistic about taping.
The band has kind of a "we-don't-care" attitude towards taping and they
don't really encourage it. That's what Gary Louris (voc, g) told me after
the soundcheck. I then talked to Mike Kent, the band's foh engineer who said
that the official policy is no taping at all, because the record label is
planning to release shows in the future.
Now, here's the interesting bit: Mike asked me what equipemt I was using and
I said DAT. The rest of the conversation went something like this: "You're
not going to set up a huge micstand, right?" "No, I was hoping to tape the
show from the board." "Oh, actually I'm supposed to do that!" The bottom
line was that Mike didn't have a deck and so he told me I could tape the
show (and send him a copy) if I managed to sneak my gear into the venue.
Keep in mind that this "policy" is totally unofficial. Nobody will help you
at the door. I also doubt that Mike will let you tape if he brings his own
recorder or if the venue has a DAT hooked up to the board. Try to find Mike
a couple of hours before the show and see if he can help you (or if you can
help him...) and be prepared to go stealth if necessary.
The Jayhawks are still touring Europe right now and will be opening for
Lucinda Williams (who is anti-taping btw) in the states after that. You
might want to try your luck. In any case, it's worth going, no matter if you
tape or not.
later...

I really hate to do it, but I have to part with my gear. I don't record
often enough anymore to justify keeping it. The rig consists of a D7,
AT853s with cardiod caps, a battery box with adjustable bass roll-off, a
Sonic Studios SLA battery with charger, and a Core Sound 7-pin I-O
cable, all packaged in a padded aluminum case. I've recorded about ten
shows with the D7 in the two years that I've had it and it hasn't been
used for playback at all. I'll entertain any reasonable offers and if I
get one that really makes me happy, I'll throw in one of the CTD-8000
audio-capable DDS drives that I have.

Hello,
I have a D7/D8 battery sled for sale. It is an internal one that holds 4-AA
batteries. I ordered it from Oade a week or so ago. There is some minor
scratches on the opposite side of the connectors but nothing that would
affect its performance. I'm selling it because I already have one but
didn't receive it when I borrowed a D8 from a friend and it only accepts
power from the 6V jack. I'd like to get what I paid for it, $15.00 plus
shipping.

Hello again,
I mentioned in my previous post that my D8 doesn't draw power from the
battery. I'm wondering if there are any places in the US (and especially
the Midwest) that still repair these decks. 2 things need to be repaired
with it: it needs to work with the internal battery and the 9V jack needs
to be replaced or fixed because any power supply jack pops out or
disconnects at the drop of a hat.

Their website (www.ttapes.com) seems to indicate so; at least, they're
no longer handling orders, and offering to refer customers to other
suppliers. They might be back.
As for dat-heads, it runs on datheads.phish.net, which appears to be
Sean Kennedy's machine; I don't see why Terrapin Tapes closing should
affect it.
My best wishes to Ken Hays, if he's reading this (or even if he isn't).
