thats what I do, except I archive to dvd-r's instead of cd's. Its pretty
trivial to set it up so you dont even need a monitor- you can access
anything you want from remote control

Read about this show in today's NY Times. Would love to get a copy of
the Waits set if anyone happened to be there.
Also, is anyone taping The Weakerthans on their current tour? would
love more recordings of them. I'll be doing the Oct. 17 Columbus show.

Any 24 bit capable soundcard will work. I would make sure the card is bit
perfect, however, because there are lots of devices that claim 24 bit
support, that are not bit perfect.
What recording device do you use do to make your 24 bit recordings? Almost
every device I know of that can be used to record at 24 bit can also be used
for playback. Does your home stereo have digital inputs? Do you have an
outboard DAC? Lots of little questions would help to determine the best
route for you. I'm guessing probably the best way to go is just plug the
laptop you use to record into the stereo either via analog or digital I/O.
Obviously, to achieve the best results you would want to go digital out of
your computer interface to a quality outboard DAC going into your either a
pre-amp, or powered monitors
As for storage of the 24 bit material you can use .ape (Monkey's Audion
Compression) or .flac (Free Lossless Audio Codec). Recently .flac has taken
the stage as the standard for most people, because the project is open
source and multi platform. Storing 24 bit onto CD is very ineffecient
however. A recording at 24bit/96kHz uses approximately 2G's per hour, so
each hour of recording will require approximately 3 CD's in .wav format,
using .flac to compress you can get that down to about 65% of the original
size, still 2 CD's per hour. A better way to go these days is DVD-R (4.7
GB's) Using .flac to compress you can archive approximately 3.5 hours of
24/96 .wav data per DVD-R.
Another option is DiscWelder Steel v2, or DiscWelder Chrome to create
gapless 24bit DVD-A's that can be played in many of the newer DVD players on
the market. This doesn't even require a computer to playback the 24
recordings, just to make, master and author the DVD-A's.
My favorite solution is storage directly on removable harddrives. You can
either stock up on external firewire or USB 2.0 drives, or better yet invest
in geek bay system and you can get your storage costs down to well under a
$1.00 a gig. I have one computer in my living room that is connected to my
stereo and home network that has access to every harddrive in the house.
Check the archives of the laptop tapers Yahoo group for more details on all
of these topics.
Good Luck,
JB

FYI:
Mogwai are allowing board tapes to be made on this
tour. Soundman's name is Myk (Mike); super nice guy,
great engineer...show lasts about 1:40. Isis, the
opening band is not to be missed. Not sure how they
feel about taping though.
one caveat however: the room mix is so loud and sweet
a board tape alone does not do this show justice. A
perfect show to do an audience and a board tape and
mix them post.
have at it indie rockers,
tm

Hi Everyone,
Well its been a long time since I have used them so I have decided to sell them. One pair of neuman km184 with scheops vark bar and stand my cables are no so they will not be included. They are in great shape and it will be sad to see them go but I just don't use them anymore. I would like $900 delivered or best offer. I think I have the big neumann windscreens for this as well they will be included if I can find them (just moved).
I also have a tascam d4000mk that I would like to sell. recently cleaned and works great $500/best. Feel free to email me with any questions.
Thanks

Hey all-
Just wondering what the taping situation has been like
for Leo this tour. Can you run a stand or does it have
to be stealth?
Thanks!

Greetz!
FS: Nak cm300's (3 pack)
complete with:
3 CP-1 and cp-2 caps (card and omni).
3 windscreens
2 used batteries (about 150 hours or so on them, still
good for atleast another 100)
2 NEW batteries
In original case (which has seen some use). Also comes
with the original spec sheet, cleaning cloth, and
booklet on how to use the 3 mic nak system.
All mics work perfectly fine, some light scratches
from use, lettering on mics is perfect (I know some
worry about this for some reason).
Email me privatly for info. I'll try to get some pics
if I can borrow a digital cam. I'd also like to keep
the set together....
email: jhirte@comcast.net
thanks!
