Subject: hyper-cardiod mic questions
Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2003 03:37:30 +0000
I'm posting this for a buddy of mine, he tried to post to the list
himself...but couldn't get it to work.
thanks in advance!
his email: thetapeape@yahoo.com
my questions are:
a. what is optimal placement of the mics on the stand (x/y... ortf...)
the same distance back from the stage as the stacks are apart
for example - if the stacks are 40 feet apart
put your stand 40 feet back from the stage
try to make a perfect triangle
of course, this is a best case scenario and we all know when you get down to
this detail the venue layout, soundboard placement, lighting board
placement, venue personnel and other factors all come into play
b. what is optimal positioning in the venue? centered? if off to a side -
how
should I point the mics?
wow, slow down there buddy ")
dfc (that's dead f#*!in' Center, in case you did not figure that out ")
is nearly always optimal in an open taping situation
but then again factors may come into play that may limit your options
"how to point" the mics has to do w/ the pattern of the mic itself
and where you can setup
and we are still talkin' "open taping"
stealth mode could be a different story
c. I was told when using the cardiod mics - to point them just wide of the
stacks... how should I point the hypers? assuming I was centered - at the
stacks? just wide? wider than if I was using cardiods?
experience has taught me that ORTF is the optimal position in many cases
when using cards, but x/y might work better depending where you are in the
venue
and what you are trying to accomplish
if it's all instrumental music and you are allowed to tape from the stage
x/y would be the way to go instead of ORTF
you should be seeing that this is not a cut and dried thang ")
at some point the taper's personal preference is going to come into play
not in the beginning maybe...
in the beginning a taper can just be desperate not to mess up and come
away w/ something respectable
could this be your situation? ")
d. can I use the hypercardiods close to a stack? if so - how would I point
them? I like taping close to a stack to minimize crowd noise - and for the
'in your face' recordings...
hypers close to the stacks - not necessarily the optimal place for them
of course the definition of "close" comes into play
first 10 rows - may not be good in certain venues
but where are the stacks?
and are you in the center?
too close and you will miss out on vocals and bass w/ hypers if you are dfc
can you hoist the stand and get alot of the stacks in an ORTF pattern??
if so, then you can swing it
if you only have hypers and you are off to the side
- x/y or straight for the stacks would be the best
hoist if possible
this is just scratching the surface and tapers differ in opinions
if you can be more specific w/ your situation, better advice can be had
Peace,
D

Hi!
Which stereo microphone has given better quality results in
non-stealth conditions?
The first model of my very short list seems to be the Audio Technica
AT-835ST, as perhaps providing the best for the money relationship.
But there might be others I would like to know of. An experience
feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I'm wondering if I should purchase a mini-me and use it with my VAIO
srx87 via USB or purchase the Sound Device 722? Not sure I would really
need the 744T it's a little over kill for concert recording. I want to
start getting away from using DAT. Please tell me your opinion on this
matter.
Thanks,
Migs

First off, my apologies for the two-days-ago blank posting. It reflected my
accidentally pressing 'send' instead of 'save' in Outlook as I was
constructing the distribution list!
I thought you might be interested in the results of my testing of Core
Sound's (www.core-sound.com) PDAudio-CF and Mic2496, along with Gidluck
Mastering's (www.gidluckmastering.com) Live2496 and Pocco Software's
(www.poccosoftware.com) Wichita recording software, at last weekend's Austin
City Limits Music Festival (with limited prior testing a few weeks earlier
at the Trinity Tribal Stomp). The writeup is quite lengthy and will be
updated in the future, so instead of including it here, the link is:
http://www.reed-electronics.com/ednmag/media/acl2003.htm
Any and all feedback is welcomed! Today I mailed DVD-Rs to both Len from
Core Sound and Gordon from Gidluck Mastering, with an encouragement to post
portions or entire sets of my recordings to their websites for you to
download (my IT folks would be very very unhappy with me if I put GBytes'
worth of audio files on EDN's servers, I think!).
By the way, as I state in my writeup:
"Bottom line: I'm doing something I've been contemplating for some time. I'm
selling all my DAT-related gear. I can frankly think of no better
testimonial to the capability of both the hardware and software I tested at
ACL and the other HDD-based recording hardware and software I've used in the
past, such as Creative Labs' Nomad Jukebox 3."
I'll be posting on Ebay my Sony TCD-D8 portable and PCM-R300 full-size DAT
decks, my Sony SBM-1 mic pre and ADC, my Sony RM-D3K 'system adapter'
(remote control) for the D8, cables from the proprietary Sony digital
connector to both S/PDIF optical and coax (passive), an EcoCharge battery
system, and a bunch of blank tapes. All gear is in excellent working and
cosmetic shape, and comes complete with (as appropriate) remote controls, AC
adapters, rack mounts, etc. When I get the auctions posted (hopefully
tomorrow), you can find them here:
http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=bldipert
Thanks in advance for your interest, and apologies to anyone I've offended
with this 'commercial'. I hope that the value of the information in my
review above more than compensates.....
Regards,
