This is a no-brainer. If the Sound Devices HD Recorders live up to their expectations they will make DAT recorders obsolete, as if they weren't already. Your talking a SD quality pre-amp > A to D (that should be worth it's salt, from the early reviews) > to Hard Drive. All in a device smaller than a brick. This device is the stealthers dream! Wait it out... The 722 is going to be much more stealthy and durable than a laptop. But the 722 release date has been pushed back to 1Q04 and you might need something now. ------------------------------ From: "Dan Boardman" Subject: SCI Alanta Fox 9-26-03 Date: Sun, 28 Sep 2003 09:56:58 -0400 Does anyone have a copy? I ran heads up comparison tapes (split between sets) with KM140s, KMR81i, TLM170s and ran a back-up rig with B&K4023. I also ran different configurations with the 150s and the differences are obvious. All the following advice is backed up by the recordings. In general, if you are up close and the recording is important to you, use the DPAs. If you want some comparison tracks, have your friend contact me off list. > a. what is optimal placement of the mics on the stand (x/y... ortf...) I got my best results going just wide of the stacks. I found the neumann small condenser hypers to be too bright when directly on axis. But don't expect alot of off axis HF attenuation. From the position where the 185s should be used, I would not recommend ORTF. I would recommend somthing more like DIN. > b. what is optimal positioning in the venue? centerd? if off to a side - how > should i point the mics? Hypers are good from the back of a crappy venue. Use them for their rejection properties. If you are off to the side, point the mics just wide of the stack. The hypers will yield a tape with good clear sound but they have a alot of bass rolloff. If you have the 4060s and you can get centered and close, leave those 153s at home. > > c. i was told when using the cardiod mics - to point them just wide of the > stacks... how should i point the hypers? assuming i was centered - at the > stacks? just wide? wider than if i was using cardiods? > Point them more narrow than you would cardioids when running from the back. Personally, I would not run cards pointing just wide of the stack in all circumstances. > d. can i use the hypercardiods close to a stack? if so - how would i point > them? i like taping close to a stack to minimize crowd noise - and for the > 'in > your face' recordings... Close to the stack, use the DPAs if the mix is good. The 150s/185s have alot of bass roll off and I found the recordings to lack bass unless the source had **alot** of bass. Again, use the 185s for their rejection properties. If you are infront of the stack and there is an overwhelming amount of bass, then the 185s can make a nice tape. But they would not be my first choice for work up close. ------------------------------ From: "Bruce Burnett" Subject: John Zorn @ Tonic-50th Birthday Celebration Reply-To: peacefrog@primusvan.zzn.com Date: Sun, 28 Sep 2003 09:26:51 -0700 I should be receiving around 20 of the shows he did @ Tonic, around mid-October. Please email me if interested in a trade to complete the entire run of shows, or at least try to get the complete run. Total cost (everything but mics) is well under the 722, though I have only 5 GB storage. For stealth, it's a big win: you deon't have to hid your iPAQ. Seth ------------------------------ From: Andrew S Fogelsong Subject: dat to computer transferring problems Date: Sun, 28 Sep 2003 15:15:19 -0500 This one's pretty weird. First off, here's the gear I use: taping: Sonic Studios DSM-6S mics PA-6LC3 powering module/bass roll-off Sony PCM-M1 DAT recorder transferring: Tascam DA-20mkII home DAT recorder Monster Cable coax cable Delta Dio 2496 digital soundcard Cool Edit Pro 2.0 I taped Yo La Tengo at an in-store at 33 Degrees here in Austin. The levels were really low. The levels while the band played was anywhere from -30db to -12db, except for the last two songs when Ira hit the distortion pedal and Georgia was hitting the drums pretty hard - the levels hit 0db many times. The applause between songs was hitting 0db and clipping a bit during the woos and yeahs. So it goes... I transferred the DAT, spent about an hour editing it - hard limiting, amplification, fades, etc... After all was said and done, I noticed a few small dropouts. I went back and listened to the tape - no dropouts. That's okay, this happens to me sometimes. I deleted the file and I was going to retransfer it. Before I did that, I did a boot-time defragmentation using Diskeeper. I'd been needing to defrag my hard drive for a while. So when I tried to retransfer the DAT, Cool Edit wouldn't record anything. It would just be silence. I checked the M Audio Delta Control Panel, which is an application that I have to use to tell the soundcard what sample rate to expect, what input I'll be using, what output to use, etc... It showed levels, so I know the soundcard was receiving the signal. I uninstalled and reinstalled both Cool Edit Pro and my soundcard. It still doesn't transfer. I just taped a show last night, and the transfer this morning worked fine. I tried to transfer the Yo La Tengo show again and it still won't transfer. So I decided to use my M1 to transfer the show. That didn't work either. My last option was to play the DAT in my M1, go out the line out to my Tascam, and out the coax to my soundcard. This works for some reason. I don't know why. I hate having to stick an analog transfer in there, especially since I'll have to edit this show, raising the levels by upwards of 15db if I recall correctly. There will be enough hiss as it is, and I'm using a Radio Shack cable. Does anyone have an idea of what went wrong? What could the defragmentation have done? Could it be the DAT tape? cheers, Andrew BWT: Mountain Goats 9/27/2003 The Parish; Austin, TX SBD>D8(line out)>M1 I'll do b&p's, the first two replies US residents only ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
