I have a great-sounding Troisi Digital Companion 24/96 that I would like
to trade for a pair of Schoeps MK21 capsules. The ADC is 2 years old,
recently checked over by Peter Troisi. Can be powered by either the AC
external power supply or battery (+12VDC pin 5, -12VDC pin 4, +5VDC pin
3). Sonically this unit is in the same league as dCS, Meintner, Genex,
and other heavyweights.
Please respond off-list with questions, etc.
Thanks

hey kids,
a year or four after these demos first "circulated," I have acquired a cdr
copy of the final cut demos, allegedly from a cassette tape purchased in
Argentina in the mid '80s. 40 odd minutes. Studio source, of course... but it sure
sounds like a cassette. This is something you want because you like The final
Cut album, not because you want to hear studio demos of a Pink Floyd (Roger
Waters) album. I'm sure every Pink Floyd fanatic on this list already has
this, but I just am so busy that I was too busy to even try to get this. If you
were to offer me See Emily Play outtakes, it would probably take me a year to
respond!
Anyway, I will offer a b/p - using Toast software, I'll copy via Toast to any
japanese-made CDR (Mitsui, Fuji, et al). My imac doesn't like non-Japanese
discs - I've tried with Taiwan TDK/Imation, and each time my imac hurls. Send
the blank cdr, your return address label (I will NOT type/print anything!),
and postage. You must follow these stupid basic instructions. I can't promise
on turnaround time, but I'll probably try to do a few cdrs at a time. If you
include a note with a legible email address, then I'll gladly confirm receipt
of your b/p package. Email me and I'll advise my address. I won't set a
limit on requests, but I'm going out of town for a week in November, as well as
for 3 weeks in February. I'll be amused if more than 3 people respond, but
strange things can happen.
I don't even know if anybody cares any longer. I'm listening to this for the
first time and remembering why Pink Floyd is my favorite band, even though
I've not yet opened my Dark Side of the Moon DVD, or watched the entire Pompeii
DVD director's cut version.

SSIA. Surely someone here has some live Modern Talking. Yes they're the
biggest joke band of the world, and probably Germany's most successful
English-singing band, but they still play in concert (even if everything is
mimed/prerecorded/playback), and I'm just dying for something! I have a shoddy recording
of their final show (the infamous Berlin June 22 '03 where Thomas the singer
arrived at the venue just minutes before they were to start, and where the
singer and songwriter left the stage and entered separate limos, never to see each
other again) - they even play their final hit "TV Makes The Superstar"!
Please help. Otherwise I might have to buy a shoddy dodgy cdr on ebay.de or
something.
Viele danke/

bwt: New Order 12-14-82 Perth (Australia) - their last show ever for 1982!
Amazing! Taped by a university student, copied for one of the best Australian
tapers of the 80s, then for me, then to DAT, then to CDR (in other words,
AM-A-A-D-CDR), now on my itunes. One track show, 72 minutes, complete.

My guess is that the obituary had a misprint, because I remember the many
stories he related to me via email about his early taping gigs. He even
sent me the Derek & the Dominos discs I referred to after that particular
story, saying that his masters would provide better sound than the Soulmates
boot version I already owned. And I'll never forget the Hendrix story.
At first seeing 41 made me wonder if it was the same John, but it's
undoubtedly the same one. I never met him in person, maybe someone else can
shed some light?

Taped a killer Weakerthans (great indie/punk band from Winnipeg) show
tonight here in Columbus, and right after or right when I took the tape
out of my D7, somehow the tape ribbon got cut I guess from catching on
something..though luckily none got caught in the deck. I seem to recall
reading older posts (but dont feel like weeding through the archive to
find them) that mishaps like this can be repaired somehow? the tape was
not rewound so if this is true and it can be repaired, the show should
be salvageable.
Also, if anyone is in the following cities on the rest of the
Weakerthans' tour and able to tape any of these shows, I would LOVE a
copy. they're cool with taping.

In 2002 #276 I posted some stuff on pre-emphasis, which could get you
started. You'd have to de-emphasis a H/D wav file by hand, though, using
the graphic- or parametric equalizer of a wave editor. Some software like
the Waves plugins have de-emphasis filte pre-sets. An acquaintance is
toiling on a command line program to batch de-emphasize music files, or do
it in real time during dat>pc s/pdif transfer, but it's nowhere ready for
prime time..and it would be Linux or Unix.

Does anyone have a No Knife show from when they opened for Sunny Day Real Estate in 2000? This tour was to promote "Fire in the City of Automatons". If you have a show where they play songs off of that album, I'd love to set up a trade with you.

Hi..
A slick digital-domain de-emphasis solution is to use a Sony digital I/O Minidisc deck (such as the MDS-JE510) in record monitor mode (Record Pause). Pre-emphasized digital input becomes non-pre-emphasized digital output in real time without any ATRAC changes.
Because Sony devised the pre-emphasis, the data-stream, and ATRAC, they provided for digital de-emphasis of input data-streams. De-emphasis is imperative before ATRAC or the sound becomes unbearably fouled up. It was much cheaper to do digital-domain de-emphasis than any other way.
The newer units with more powerful processor chips may simultaneously ATRAC-encode and ATRAC-decode, thus losing information (I don't know), but older units (such as the JE510) simply don't have the CPU horsepower, so in record monitor mode the digital output is both de-emphasized and ATRAC-free.
Hope this helps.

just wanted to pipe in real quick along with the rest of jt's taping/trading
allies here. i swapped a few dats with him over the years and found him to
be over generous in all aspects of 'the trade'. a true fan indeed.
i remember salivating over a trade list of his 'back in the
day'....zeppelin, floyd, dead, airplane, derek & the dominoes masters...and
he wanted to trade with me?? i was honored!
he did tell me when i traded with him that some essential analog 'masters'
(see bands above)>DAT that i got(no band specifically) we're from gen1 r2r
backups>DAT.
john also sent me a really interesting cassette as well. someone spoke of
him driving a taxi, which is correct. he audio recorded some of the
'interesting' clients that he had in the backseat and compiled a few of them
onto a cassette. the one i have is labled 'taxicab adventures volume #1'.
he might have flowed this out to many others as well..i dunno. it has a
strange 'raymond & peter' stealthy-oddities type vibe to it.
i just dug out the maxell cassette that john sent and im planning on running
it to cd then spreading a few of them around this list. it'll be a couple
of days before i can get to it. id like to get it around to you kind folks,
unless it is pretty widespread already.
i agree that his age of 41 @ the time of his passing was way too young, and
it also brought up other questions concerning tape geneology. his voice
that is on the 'taxi cab' tape is also on the DAT i got from him of his
floyd master from tampa stadium '73...maybe the obit was a typo.
