For Sale:
Sony DAT Walkman, TCD-D8 - this portable DAT recorder
works perfectly, and is a perfect entry-to-mid-level piece of
equipment. I was using a set of core-sound binaural mics with
it to record shows and I'll throw those in with this deal. Im
just too busy these days to do much recording,
I just dont really use it anymore, but its a great
machine. I have some great memories and music recorded on tape
thanks to this DAT recorder. Id love to be able to sell it to
someone on here (as opposed to an electronics shop or something).
Im asking $550 for the mics and the recorder. Email
upturned@yahoo.com for more. Someone cool take this off
my hands please!!!!!!!

Subject: Updated Notation for 9/7/86 Ranch Rock Festival
Date: Sat, 1 Nov 2003 14:03:34 EST
Thanks to people too numerous to mention, here is updated and near-complete
notation for the September 7, 1986 Ranch Rock Festival held at Pyramid Lake in
Nixon, Nevada. This concert featured various Grateful Dead members and many
favorite Bay area musicians jamming the day and night away, when The Dead were
on unexpected hiatus due to Jerry Garcia's diabetic coma and recovery. This
day was also a major treat for John Cipollina fans, as he played with every
band.
Some things I noticed along the way of compiling this information is that
countless people have sets from this show, but few have all of it, and even fewer
have accurate setlists or lineups for the various bands, so I hope this
posting will help many people needing notation for this show. I also noticed that
many online lists containing this show have it listed as a soundboard
recording. While a soundboard may certainly exist, I checked out half a dozen different
copies and all of them were the same extremely clear audience recording.
Research leads me to believe that the best tapes made that day originated from
various people patched off the same rig of Nak 700s with capsules mounted on
plexiglass pressure zone plates. There were a few different masters made that day
that were patched into this rig and these recordings are very nice with
everything on stage clearly audible.
All the setlists are now complete and accurate. I'm fairly sure all the band
personel and guest information is also accurate, but if you notice any
mistakes, please let me know. Likewise, if anyone has or knows where a high
resolution scan of the poster for this show can be found, please let me know. This
show had a great looking poster but I can only find tiny thumbnail copies online.
I'll also entertain a few B&Ps and trades for this if theres interest. Send a
list if wishing to trade. Heres the notation. I hope the formatting doesnt
get too screwy in cyberspace. Stu

hi,
i taped robyn hitchcock at the bottom line last nite ( late show) . the
tape came out superb, and the show was great. not a lot of chat, he was a
song machine, doing a lot of oldies/rarely performed songs. it was
mentioned that it wuld be broadcast next week on serius radio. if anyone can
tape the shows, i'd like to hear them. if you want a copy of mine, drop me a
line.
thanks
have fun,
Mike Hooker

hey all,
i just got back into town from robyn hitchcock's
excellent solo shows at the bottom line in nyc.
as folks may know, this venerable institution in in
danger of eviction by landlord NYU after a nearly
30-yr. run under same ownership at same location.
sirius satellite radio has rallied to the club's
partial rescue, paying their back rent, and now
b'casting some shows over their network.
thus my search: does anyone have Sirius and the
ability to record the show (around 3hrs total) to DAT,
which the Sirius spokesperson claimed will be b'cast
in the next few days?
I have much to trade, both robyn and otherwise, and
will be sure to make one's effort well worth-while -
assuming that is, that having this great show doesn't
prove to be reward in itself.
please contact me off-list if you can help.
many thanks in advance!
mike

As luck would have it, I've recently been looking into this sort of
thing. I'm a bit more interested in exploring some alternatives to DAT,
but we seem to have the same goal: getting a digital signal onto a
computer. So far, I'm still in the evaluation stage so I have not
actually tried anything yet. Probably one of the simplest and cheapest
solutions I've come across is the M-Audio Transit:
<http://www.m-audio.com/products/m-audio/transit/>
I've ordered one of these from Sound Professionals to evaluate.
<http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=515&item=MM-TRANSIT&type=store>
At U.S. $79.00 it seems like a pretty good deal. I've read the manual
but there are scant details on the guts of this thing, but it seems to
pass digital S/PDIF directly to the PC over the USB bus at up to
24/96K. It has A/D D/A circuitry and plug-in power for electeret mics,
but it does not mention what chipset it uses nor any specs on the
conversion process so I wouldn't rely on it for actual recording.
Once mine arrives and I've had a chance to evaluate it, I'll post a
review here at DAT-Heads.
