Something not too bulky, durable, with decent functions? I'm looking to
pick one up and I figured I'd go to the experts before laying down the
cash.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I've been a DAT taper for years, but went cheap for a quick portable,
Sony MD. Much to my surprise there is no transfer to pc facility. I think
there might be a digital line out... anyone know of a good source for
cables, or am I all wet?
:-)

Hi -
Got a question on current home DAT decks...
I have a Sony 59ES that I have had since 1994. Right when I got it, I =
had the tension mod installed. This was a known problem with this deck. =
The deck has performed flawlessly since the repair. Now, almost ten =
years later, I am starting to see the deck have a hard time with 90m =
tapes, and even 60m tapes once and awhile.
I know, I know - we were told not to push the limits by using 90m tapes! =
What I see is the right spindle has a hard time pulling the tape on =
playback. Sometimes it gets stuck. It jumps and stutters. Also, when =
I try to fast forward the tape, it whizzes quickly, then struggles, then =
stops after fast forwarding for a few seconds.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is worth getting this =
repaired, or if the repairs would just be too expensive - ie replacing =
motors, etc. I guess I would look into the Oade's repair service, or =
Paul Plotnick at Pro Digital. Or perhaps I am just better off buying a =
new home unit - a Sony PCM-R300 looks like it goes for $650 or so.
Can anyone drop me a line with some info of home DAT decks that are =
still being made? I think Sony may be the only company still making =
them. I'd also like to hear if anyone else has had the same problems I =
am experiencing with this deck. I wouldn't mind repairing it if it =
could be done for $200-$300.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi. I'm having to replace my Sony DAT as I dropped it too many times, and
the $400 repair didn't work. I'm looking at portable models. What do
folks think of something like the Marantz PMD670... it allows for mp3
compression, and easy transfer to computer? I'm looking for something I
can import easily into my computer. Everything I tape ends up on a
CD. I'm not looking for supreme audio quality, just really good.

Another question. I've been told to get a decent carrying case for my
DAT? It's virtually the same as the new model Sony PCM-M1, only much
older. I've heard you can buy a case that doesn't cover up the buttons
(adjustments), but will protect the unit in a fall.
Any ideas?
thanks!
