Since I got my D8, I've been warned not to travel with batteries or tape inside the unit. I have been very consistent in not doing this. However, I was only removing the batteries from the D8 in their plastic tray and then leaving them in that. Last weekend I went to insert the batteries into the D8 and it wouldn't fit. Boggled, I looked carefully and realized the metal piece that holds the spring had pushed right through the plastic...as if the plastic was soft and the pressure of the springs pushed it through the soft plastic. Somehow the batteries shorted out I guess and melted it! I am 99% sure I had the batteries in the correct position, but i was using the cheapo rayovacs.
