Being currently unemployed forces me to have to put this deck up for sale. VERY low hours. It was just completely serviced by Midwest Digital & given a completely clean bill of health in June. Used very little since. It has the rack mount ears on it. I am looking for $525 which includes UPS ground shipping & insurance. Since nobody wanted it yesterday, I dropped the price by $70. It's a sweet deck, and I hate to part with it..... but I'm hurting for $$. I can also be reached at jameshelgerson@sbcglobal.net . _________________________________________________________________ Need a shot of Hank Williams or Patsy Cline? Skerik's septet was opening for Charlie Hunter last week and security told me that if I even opened my bag, I was out. Usually openers follow the headliner's policy, so I was surprised by that. By stating that he wants a copy in his taping policy, I find that to go against the spirit of taping and trading. He's doing us a favor by letting us tape, and we could do him a similar favor by hooking him up with a copy. Demanding a copy in the policy isn't the way to go. I've found that most of the artists who ask me for copies end up being like most of the other fans who do, and never get in touch or never provide an address anyway. -Matt __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? How bad can things get in consumer devices? What jitter performance values could we actually hear? That kind of questions. Who can tell more? A friend asked me to help circulate this petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/frogbrgd/ "I was just asked to sign a petition to get Les Claypool to release a soundboard recording of a special show he did back in May. There were no tapers in attendance, so therefore; there are no bootleg recordings. Supposedly, Les did record it from the soundboard. The show was Les playing with the three members of Deadweight (Ben Barnes, Sam Bass, and Paulo Baldi). As a huge, longtime fan of Les, and a recent, but enthusiastic fan of Deadweight, I'd kill for this recording. Even if all of this means nothing to you, please consider signing the petition for me. The more signatures, the better chance of getting it. I'd be a very happy boy. Thanks." Thanks for your time, *phiL* __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I called Sony about having a DTC-60ES repaired. It was going to cost $175 to say hello. Then they don't have tech's, or at least didn't 2 years ago, who worked on DAT's only, or even digital euipment only. I asked "So the Tech who works n my DAT Deck, may have just worked on a cassette Walkman or an Alarm Clock?" YEP. I think what Sony does at their repair facilities is produce estimates to repair equipment that is so high, it's not worth it. I don't think they actually fix anything. We've logged ZERO glitches thus far. None. The only possible issue is a set > 3 hours, same issue as with DAT. The D8 has f*cked things up numerous times (and was new 8 mos. ago). Once you've transferred a whole 3 hr show in ten minutes, you'll be a believer. If you like Minidisc, this thing'll blow you away. Get one. Yeah, you missed something, like the post that Don was replying to, which immediately followed his comments. Don't judge the entire country by what's available in your neck of the woods. Japanese Fujis are still plentiful here, and might be in other parts of the country. The way everybody's hyperventilating I may go out and buy up another 200 and have enough blanks for two or three years... Jim ------------------------------ From: "DCA" Subject: Re: Japan vs. Taiwan mfgr'ing Reply-To: "DCA" Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2003 18:27:53 -0500 Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but I have a feeling we won't be seeing much CDs coming from Japan in the future, and I am not sure it really matters - here's why... It is more expensive to mfgr in Japan, just like it is in USA. That's why corporations are "selling out" to Low Cost Countries (LCCs) for less expensive mfgr'ing. I have a feeling the Taiwan disks are still "TY" disks. Companies like them start their expertise in their own country, much like USA products. Then, after they make money on the idea initially - all mfg'ring is moved to an LCC, like Taiwan, China, Korea, etc.. They have the capability to invest in the equipment & move the same mfg'ring to another place and make more of a profit to compete in the market. Let's face it, they are not getting rich selling disks for $0.50 a piece, esp at Japan labor rates. They will move on to some newer more proprietary technology like the new DVD disks that they can get more money for like DVD+/-ROM, DVD RAM, AOD, etc Then, the cycle will repeat itself. Basically, tons of American jobs are going overseas as well, because some corporate exec got the bright idea to move products to LCCs for more profit, and everyone else has to follow to compete. So jobs are lost here, and our dependency on foreign countries increases. Doesn't exactly give me a warm, fuzzy feeling, either. But, as LCCs go, Taiwan is actually up at the top of the list. I try (as much as possible) to not buy stuff made in China and Korea. That stuff is more likely to be garbage. Mexico is another one, it can be good or bad. I try to buy stuff made right here in my Homeland, but corporations make it harder every day. Everywhere you look stuff is made in China. I hope for two main qualities in CDs: compatibility with older players, and good aging qualities. Personally, I buy Maxell (Taiwanese) "Music CD" disks b/c they are compatible with all mine and other's CD players. I could never find a CDR that played as well with all equipment. As far as aging, who really knows until that time comes, I've yet to see a spec, but they are supposed to last anywhere from 10-20 yrs. last I checked. But, a misread is the immediate danger, since digital is either 1 or 0, there is not a good 1 and a bad 1, etc. Not like poor quality analog tapes of the past. So, not only are these products moving to LCCs, but the LCCs are becoming more technologically advanced and capable than in the past, so unless you have a plan to change the world, better get used to it for now. There are some comforting thoughts - 1.) once China gets off the Yuan and onto the Euro & U.S Dollar economy they won't have as much of an advantage (they are fighting this tooth and nail). 2.) Once companies and consumers realize that more often than not that in most case "you get what you pay for", the quality will be put back into products, b/c people will not buy the crap that some companies are trying to pass off to the consumer market. Sorry for the long post, thanks for reading... Dave ------------------------------ From: Philip Dinhofer Subject: Portable Hard Drive Recorder Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2003 15:40:47 -0800 (PST) A while back I recall reading about a portable hard drive recorder (not a laptop) that would replace DAT's for stealth/live recordings. I can't remember its name or the manufacturer. It worked like any other portable recorder, only you recorded to a hard drive instead of a tape. I recall the discussion that it's release had been delayed, and was wondering if it ever came out. Anybody recall this? Phil __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I can't remember its > name or the manufacturer. There are several. They come in multiple types: 1. Dedicated machines. These tend to be expensive (several thousand $). I don't remember names offhand, but they should be mentioned in the archives. These record .wav files, often well above CD quality; they also (sometimes) record multitrack, and have high quality A/D converters, etc. 2. Consumer .mp3 players that can also record .wav at CD quality, such as the Nomad. 3. Core Sounds PDAudio, a CF card that takes S/PDIF (and similar formats) in, and sends out through the other end (into an iPAQ or similar, or a laptop). Personally, I think this is the best option: much cheaper than the dedicated machines (even with outboard A/D converter), smaller and capable of recording at higher quality than the Nomad.
