I live very close to the "official" Sony repair center in the US for DAT equipment. A few years ago I was having some problems with my D100 eating tapes. I called Sony, they told me to send it to the Norwood facility. I drove over, dropped off the unit, and waited. And waited.... and waited. About 3-4 weeks later I called to get a status update, and was told the tech had "looked at it, and thought it looked fine". (I won't add any further comment there.) So I dicussed with the phone rep. how it was a somewhat sporadic issue, ie not every tape was affected. He said he would check with the technician. Another week or so, and nothing, so I call back. Tech still says it looks fine. I ask to speak with this "tech", but am told that is not possible. Its been about 5-6 weeks now, so I decide this is a waste (and in the meantime, I am missing some good shows). I drove back to the repair center and basically told the guy there that if they are not going to give it a thorough examination, I am not going to pay to have someone open it up and play a tape, I can do that myself. So I ended up getting the deck back... I lost 5-6 weeks of use, but didnt give them a dime. Point is, if this is the best Sony can do to provide service to owners of DAT products, don't waste your time. Perhaps there has been a management shakeup there, or maybe they have some real DAT technicians, but personally I wont go back. As for my D100, I still get a rare eaten tape, but have minimized the problem for me by using this particular unit only for recording situations, and using a cleaning tape before and after every usage. The unit also seems to have far less issues with Sony tapes, so I've pretty much resigned myself to them. Phil, In addition to the options that Seth Breidbart's msg lists, check out the Marantz PMD670 (http://www.marantzpro.com/Products/PMD670.html). It's a bit smaller and much lighter than a DA-P1, but with all of its capabilities and then some. It records on Compact Flash memory cards or CF-sized microdrives. A 1gig card/microdrive gives you about 95 minutes of uncompressed stereo 44.1 .wav file and hours more if you choose one of the many variations of .mp3 and .mp2 formats the machine offers. Larger cards and microdrives are available (up to 6gig now, I believe), but they are pretty pricey. You move the files into your computer by a CF reader (the same you'd use to transfer photo files from a digital camera) or the recorder has a USB port so that when plugged in it shows up on your desktop as a removable drive. Several online merchants sell it for around $650. -- Alan -#- ------------------------------ From: Michael Miller Subject: re: Portable Hard Drive Recorder Date: 26 Nov 2003 12:15:18 -0500 > A while back I recall reading about a portable hard > drive recorder (not a laptop) that would replace DAT's > for stealth/live recordings. Date: Wed, 26 Nov 2003 11:15:50 -0800 (PST) I recorded a 311 show last night on my D7 and I checked it several times throughout the show. It showed that it was recording and I saw/adjusted the levels. When I took the tape out, some of the tape was outside of the cassette (tangled) and now if I try to play the tape, it is reading as blank. I'm assuming there was some problem with the tape loading (because I didn't record the 1st minute blank or fast forward the tape a bit before I started recording). I've read about this same problem happening to a few other people here (who use D7/D8s), however, I wasn't able to find a solution in the archives. So is there anyway for me to recover the music on this tape? Or is it really blank? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Meghan (If anyone else happened to record 311 in Hamburg, NY, please get in touch!) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? People will generally give me that address then, or at least an email contact where I can get somewhere to send it. The way I see it, it should be our duty as tapers to get copies of the shows to the artists, as taping is a privilege, not a right! Also, with bands I've corresponded with, sent them copies, taped a few times, I've gotten to know more and whatnot. as the case with Mike Watt, Dysrhythmia, Ted Leo, etc. Last time I saw Teddy, he finally remembered me from showing up at Ohio area shows of his with a mic stand, and we ended up talking about football (since his last LP was named after fabled Ghana club team Hearts of Oak) and I learned his favorite team is Chelsea. >I've heard this as the reason Fishbone no longer >allows taping.... > > The deal with that.... A couple years ago I was taping Fishbone at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. non-stealth, and assumed everything was cool since I had mentioned a few times on the Fishbone list prior to the show that I would be taping. Said list has quite a few people close to the band, and none of them said anything, so I assumed all was still cool with the taping policy. Blind Pig is an average sized bar/club, so no problems getting the gear in. It wasn't until halfway through Tha Bone's set that their tour manager at the time came up to me and told me I had to take my mic stand down. I don't know why he picked the middle of the show to tell me this, rather than before the show, which would've been the more polite thing to do. After talking with him for a bit, he agreed at the show that I'd give him the masters and he said he'd copy them in Pittsburgh a few days later, and I would get them back in the mail by the next week at the latest. The only time I ever heard back from him was a nasty email he sent me about a month or two later pretty much chastising me for taping. (It's almost like he was Steve Albini or something. :D ) He also said he didn't like me talking about him on the Fishbone list. I happened to mention what happened at the A2 show a while afterwards, and said he never sent the masters he said he was going to. But rather than respond to said posts on the list, he chose to wait a few weeks and send a nasty email in private. So the next time after that I saw Fishbone, I just left the gear at home, and went and danced my ass off and had a good time grooving to some music I first got into in high school. There's no more Fishbone now to tape, but if you're going to tape the new project with Angelo, Norwood, Rocky George (Suicidal Tendencies), and others, go the stealth route! >It is more expensive to mfgr in Japan, just like it is in USA. These songs are also missing from the notation for this date=20 at Deadlists.com (as of 11/2003) and various longtime collectors I consulted= =20 all had an incomplete copy of Set 2. Also, there is a song title mistake in= Set=20 1 on the Deadlists entry. It currently notates the 7th song of Set 1 as=20 Rainbow, a track from the Powerglide album, but this is a completely differe= nt=20 song and I may not be titleing it accurately. I've seen this song listed=20 elsewhere as Faster Than The Speed Of Sound, but I Am Your Man (Im In Love=20= With You)=20 makes some sense, as those are the last two lines of every chorus. Either=20 way, its not Rainbow. The Set= 1=20 source was used for track 5 because this song was incomplete on the new Set=20= 2=20 source. There was no noise reduction or processing done to any of the Set 1=20 and 2 material.
