I have been writing on the back of CD-R's for 3 years with sharpies. I use fine and extra fine point sharpies. People's CD's I send out, I only write in the center area. On my own I write anyplace on the non-recorded side. I have never, ever had any of the discs I wrote on fail for any reason. Several years ago, I read the same comment from someone else, I believe it was Seth, in this forum. Keith ------------------------------ From: "robert t" Subject: Recent DAT Posts, eating and load errors Date: Thu, 27 Nov 2003 17:33:21 -0500 When I got my Sony D100 walkman deck, I like a lot of others used it for both playing and recording tapes. Sometimes Fast Forward and Rewind and the other search options on the deck were used too. Little did I know that using the deck this much would eventually cause problems later on. It is an electronic device and like all other electronic devices, it can wear out. And rather quickly too, given the sensitive nature of this device. So That day came and it started acting funny, eating tapes and having load errors. I then searched the net for help and found DAT Heads. I Found out that these Sony Decks like the D100 and M1 models were way more delicate than I thought. These decks could not take as much use and abuse than regular Cassette decks ( which I had been used to using.) The electronics and the gears inside make these decks so delicate that they need to be babied and only used for special events like recording at a concert. This is when I learned that when I'm home, I should be using a Home DAT deck. Because these Home DAT decks seem to be built tougher and will have less problems than portables, it only makes sense to use Home decks when I'm at home and save the life of my portable for when I really need it, like at a show. When your at home and want to do some DAT listening or transfers to CD, you should really invest in a home deck for this type of use. And save the life of your expensive D100 or M1. I got two really decent second hand Home Use DAT decks from eBay for $200 (They'd cost me $800 bucks New from a dealer) that I use to do transfers to CD or other DATs for trading. And they work GREAT! The eBay seller was Honest and had a good feedback. Since I've invested in Home decks, I only use my aging D100 for concert recording now and because I don't use any functions on it but PLAY, STOP and RECORD. I haven't had a tape eaten or load incorrectly since. Sometimes not being able to Rewind in D100 is a hassle, but I don't mind too much because there is usually plenty of tape on the end, that it doesn't matter if the first five minutes I record crowd noise because the show starts five minutes late. Another thing, I've solved the problem with load errors and I don't have to record a little bit then back the tape up to find out if it's loaded properly. What I do is the night before every show I take the blank I'm going to use and record on it once all the way through at home using a home DAT deck connected to a radio or CD player. So that when I'm at the show and I'm getting ready to hit record on the D100, I hit play first and if I see the LEDs moving up and down, I know that the tape is loaded correctly and I won't suffer a misload. From there I hit record and play, the deck then goes from playing the tape to recording. Misloads are a thing of the past for me and I've never left a concert without a recording of it. When I get home I rewind the tape in the Home deck. Just a few ideas. Remember it may be worth it to you as well to get a home deck for your listening or CD transfers. To save the life and usefulness of your own portable DAT walkman so you don't have search out and buy a new one or pay for those extremely high repair prices later on. _________________________________________________________________ Say “goodbye” to busy signals and slow downloads with a high-speed Internet connection! The catch is that it's only 16/44.1 so if you're doing 24/96 or whatever it wouldn't work for you. If that would work it (or similar thing) could save you some money. It sounds great to me! First, they don't occur on both channels at the same time. More important, you'll still fill out the remainder of a sector with 0's. Since the signal is already low, you won't hear a "pop", but you're still distorting the music. (It's probably not noticeable to most people.) >> Thanks for this info, Seth. When I contacted Sound Forge regarding the need to split tracks at sector boundaries in continuous audio programs, the rep said he was unaware of such a need and advised me to simply mark tracks at zero crossing to prevent pops. This has worked very well for me, but I was unaware, until reading your post, that it adds a silent portion to the audio. My recollection is that a sector is very short in length (is 1/74th second correct?) so you are correct in that it would not normally be noticeable coming at a zero point, but I agree that this procedure would insert very short silent portions into the program, and could cause audible distortion if both channels were not at a zero crossing where the track mark was placed. I don't think it's a matter of demanding anything, but more of a 2 way agreement...they allow you to tape in exchange for a copy. Sounds like a fair deal to me. I wish all bands took that stance. Here's the 2 references for Critters Buggin: From this link: http://www.crittersbuggin.com/nakedpravda.html "Tapers...if you taped recent shows...please send a copy to the band! That's their rules...and we wouldn't want them to pull the plugs now would we... plus, they really appreciate it!:" And from this link: http://www.crittersbuggin.com/address.htm "If you need to send Critters Buggin your recorded media from a live show..." Galactic also have a similar policy From this link: http://fogworld.com/galactic/tape/ "Q: Are you sure you're OK with us taping your band? A: Yep. We only ask a few things from you: Send us the best possible copy (metal cassette or DAT) of any recording you make to the band..." ==== From: "Bruce Burnett" Subject: Skeriks rules, not my rules Reply-To: peacefrog@primusvan.zzn.com Date: Wed, 26 Nov 2003 09:45:23 -0800 Is there an actual printed copy, or is it on any website stating this? or is this just everyones opinion?
