I knw Steve and I are not the only one's who have written on the back of
CD-R's with Sharpies, and have had no problems from it.
>I'd also like to repeat that I have had no problem with the Taiwan blanks that I have used over the last 2-3 years (Jensen, Fuji, TDK... all the usual suspects),, I'll admit I may just be lucky, but there is so much dissatisfaction with Taiwan manufactured blanks, I just wonder why. Like I said in my last post, burn errors used to be common back when,, but I just don't recall a single problem in the boatload I've done in the last few years. Is it possible that folks have stuck so fiercely to what worked best years ago that they haven't allowed themselves to accept improvements outside of their sights. Not being confrontational, but just wondering if anyone has had actual real life problems, ones beyond some technical report. Life expectancy, maybe?
>
YES. I had a shitload of problems with a bunch of different brands of
blanks from Taiwan. I ended that problem when I used only TY
manufactured media. Now, TY media is available for $25 per 100 every
day. It's not worth my time to go chase around to Comp USA, Best Buy
and everyplace else to try to save money, and buy the same shit that
caused me problems. Also, having about 500 TY manufactured blanks on
hand means I don't even have to worry about media for a while. When TDK
switched from making their own media to using crap from Taiwan, ended my
buying TDK media, except fo r the brief period they sold some TY
manufactured media, several years ago.

Hi all-
I also write on CDR's with sharpies and have never
noticed a problem stemming directly from this
practice.
With all the discussion about no more TY Fuji media, I
would like to also mention the importance of the top
coat to longevity of optical media. Yes, good dye is
important, and it sucks that we will no longer have
the cheap TY fuji media. But IMHO just as important is
to use a disc with a durable top powder coat layer,
that has a minimum of material removed for
branding/labeling.
By this, I am referring to the way the CDR's are
labeled. If you take a close look you will see that
very often, the labeling and cosmetic design of the
disc is performed by removing the protective top coat,
exposing the shinier silver backing. This shiny silver
part is then used to delineate the manufacturer's
logo, CDR details, decoration, etc. These exposed
areas are at MUCH HIGHER RISK of flaking than the
powder coated areas.
It is a good idea to use optical media that has as
complete and uninterrupted a top coat as possible, to
prevent flaking. I would STRONGLY advise AGAINST using
any type of "silver" disk that has no protective top
coat. I got a spindle of TY silver disks in 98-99 of
which virtually 100% have exhibited flaking problems
since. In contrast, NONE of my old imation discs from
98' have flaked. These had a fully continuous powder
coat top with inked lettering on top of the powder
coat and none of the coating removed. Most of the
hundreds of imations I have gone through over the
years are fine. The only ones that have flaked have a
big cut out in the powder coat layer where the imation
logo is branded (from 2001???). Guess where these
flaked? That's right, in that large area where the top
coat was removed. Good dye does you no good if the top
reflective layer does not hold up over time.
Next time you go to buy optical disks take a look at
the top coat for different brands. You will see that
some are virtually complete with small amounts removed
for labeling and decoration (Fuji, TDK, imation), some
have huge exposed silver areas (the aforementioned TY
silvers, Khypermedia from Circuit city), and some have
complete top coats with no areas removed (some
mitsuis: I've seen "silvers" that have a continuous
silver powder coat, recent AT&T branded discs). I
usually try to purchase discs that have as complete a
top coat as possible, and NEVER buy "silver" discs
that have no top protective coating.
Anyway, just wanted to share some of my observations
with you all. Hope this is interesting to someone out
there, and happy burning!!!
Take care,
Ben

I don't know what sort of bands yinz tape, but most bands I tape (and
friends that are in bands, etc) are not career musicians and have
second/day jobs. People that play music because they honestly love
music, and tour because they like playing shows in different cities.
Most people I know save up money to go on tour so they can afford to do
so. Then pile in a beat up van with some other smelly punk rockers
playing equally smelly basements playing to equally smelly kids. And
then do it all again when they can next. (that last bit was not trying
to poke fun at any scene, but rather said lovingly)
I've thought about touring with friends bands just to tape them on tour,
but I haven't yet reached a point where I'm able to quit any job for any
period of time to do so. Also the punk/HC/metal scene here in Columbus,
Ohio is pretty small so if I don't tape a show, odds are it won't get
taped. It'd be silly to hold onto something and keep others from
hearing it.

Looking for Radiohead at Nottingham Arena
29/11/03.
I recorded on Sony MD and Sony mic but was on an
aisle seat at front and so for first two songs
managed only to record seat ticket holding p****d
up t***s arguing with stewards wanting to get to
floor level to see band. Most of show is good
quality but would really like a decent recording.
Lots to trade,
Thanks
John

<curmudgeon> Grmph - last time I ever organize a CD-R tree, most people
bailed on me.</curmudgeon>
So if anyone's interested in trading for Built To Spill 09/24/03 -
09/27/03, Irving Plaza, New York (from my own masters, left balcony
> Marantz EM-8 > JVC XM-R70), drop me a line and we'll work something out.
All (except the 09/26/03) are two discs.

Keith Bode wrote "I have been writing on the back of CD-R's for 3 years with
sharpies." ??? You write onto the burned side of the disc and they still
play??? Sorry; couldnt resist.
Here's a shocker; I had applied a Post-It onto the top side of a CDR with all
of the info about that disk; song order/recordist/rig & Date & venue. I
pulled the disc out to hear it (its in one of those CD notebooks), peeled off the
Posty thing and THE SILVER SURFACE PULLED OFF too!! This was a TDK disc;
suddenly I was looking through a clear section on the CD! Shit! Ruined! Be
warned...
