If you're taping mainstream, or at least near mainstream, then yeah I'd say they should already be taping themselves. And if they are using any of your ideas without giving you at least credit, then f**k them. As a matter of fact, I'd love to know their names so I make sure never to attend a show. I sometimes tape local bands around here and lots of them haven't ever even thought of recording their shows, or they just couldn't afford to get someone to do it for them. ------------------------------ From: "Bob Griesel" Subject: RE: Sharpies and Stickies Reply-To: Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2003 14:59:48 -0800 YES! Your mileage may vary with Sharpies, but sticky notes or other adhesives are known enemies. Someone made a comment about the coating on the top of the disc. This coating is very important because the top of the disc is actually more subject to damage than the bottom. You may be able to polish imperfections out of the thick plastic on the bottom, but the top is totally unforgiving if it receives damage. Since I don't always know what the top layer is made of, I stay away from Sharpies on the top except in areas which do not have data burned. I've seen discs damaged by Sharpie ink on the top for sure. The top coatings have improved, but why mess with it if you expect the CD to still play in a few years? Every day, no cuopon, no rebate, no sale. That seems pretty cheap to me, If that don't cut it, define what you would like to pay. They also sell DAT's for a bit cheaper than the best price I've found elsewhere on Sony DG 60 and 90P's. ------------------------------ From: hewitt Subject: ISO: Lonnie Smith & David "Fathead" Newman - live Beck Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2003 18:04:15 -0700 Oops -- sorry for duplicate. Anyone record these two old time maestros in New York a few months back? Much to trade if so. ------------------------------ From: "DCA" Subject: Re: CD quality, Taiwan vs. Japan, labeling, etc. Reply-To: "DCA" Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2003 21:20:40 -0500 I agree with Ben's and other's posts that alluded to the fact that a lot of the CD quality has to do with not only the country of origin and manufacturer, but also the physical quality of appearance of the disc. I agree if you are using the gazillion spool of the silver only discs that cost - $0.001 after rebate, then you are more likely to have problems. You, as the consumer, need to use discs that appear to be well made, not just whether they are stamped with "Taiwan" or "Japan". I am sure there are crappy disks out there made in Taiwan, but I firmly believe if you use well known brand names, you will not have problems, no matter the country of origin. I also believe that they are most likely perfecting the process, and the Taiwan (and even Japan) disks of today are much better than yesterday. You really can't judge today's technology based on yesterday's technology. Disks only a year or two ago were only good for 16x burning or less, now many are 40x. I never burn at the fastest speed, but the disk has to be better quality to be able to be certified at the higher burn speeds. You also can't judge by small details like whether the disk is frosted in the middle or not (maybe if it was a donut?) - that's probably just a difference of the disk stock, cosmetic only. As one writer on this list reprinted the quality statement of Fuji, that was on both the Taiwan and Japan disks, reinforces my point that it depends on the quality standards of the manufacturer - they should most definitely be the same no matter where they are made, if they are controlled by a reputable company. The disks will need to meet or exceed these standards. The processes are set up to be the same in either Japanese or Taiwanese soil. You only have to worry if you are using generic product, or something like that. Don't want to imply anything here, but it also depends on the quality of the CD burner. I have never had a burn error with either my HP or Sony drives, even when using the el cheapo silver disks (at one time, but don't use them anymore). As far as the marker discussion: water-based Sharpie vs. oil-based pen..... I think the only issue there is longevity. I have seen some pens fade over time. I can't read most of my VCR tape labels anymore - they have faded to "blank". But, I have not seen the sharpies fade so far in the four years I have been using them on CDs, and they do not cause any disk quality problems whatsoever. DPA 4061s>M1 recorded close to the stacks (75 min) . Right now I'm mainly looking for other high quality sets of Tortoise from '03, especially 6/13/03 Bonnaroo. john _________________________________________________________________ Share holiday photos without swamping your Inbox. They also have new "2-in-1" slim cases that hold 2 discs in one slim case. At Office Max, they have a 30-pack of "color swirl Fuji discs" (country of orgin unknown) for $1 after rebate. --G ------------------------------ From: Michael P Murphy Subject: Yamaha CD-RW and 99 870 mb discs Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2003 00:48:11 -0500 I have Yamaha CD-RW drive that says it supports 870 and 790 mb discs for 99 and 90 minute record times. Has anyone used or even seen any of these size blanks? Anyone else used one of these drives or have an opinion on them? They have a feature that at least sounds useful called Advanced Audio Master Quality Recording System. It allegedly gives a better audio disc...it uses more space,a 700 mb disc will only hold 600 or 650 mb in this mode and it burns at 4x. Anybody know anything bout this? Thanks, Michael ------------------------------ From: "Kenneth Dudzik" Subject: Need Help Editing Music Reply-To: Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2003 08:41:08 -0600 Hi All, I recorded Junior Brown last Wednesday night in Chicago and the sound guy was cool enough to let me plug in. I was not anticipating plugging in so I brought my mics and not my RCA plugs so I ended up using a 1/4 inch adaptor into the SBD and an 1/8th inch into my D8. I did not have any headphones with me so I could not listen to the recording while I was taping. After the show, I played back the tape and it is slightly distorted at points where it's very loud. During any vocals, snare drum, high guitar notes etc. As if the levels out to my DAT were too high. Is there any software out there that can help me reduce or completely clear up the distortion? I have cool Edit 2000 but I have not figured out what I can do to fix this. So far I have recorded four shows in a row with problems. I guess I have bad luck. :-( Any help would be excellent. Thanks, Ken ------------------------------ From: Phil Thenstedt Subject: RE: Giving the band a copy of the show you taped Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2003 10:16:33 -0800 I think a lot of people have missed the point of this whole thing. In this case the band requested 'if you tape, we want a copy'. It's a pretty simple statement and not too hard to fulfill...a $2 dat clone, or $1 worth of cd's with less than $1 for postage. Sounds like a cheap and painless exchange to me. As for Critters Buggin: Critters Buggin did a full tour in 2001, which ended in October of that year. They played a show in New Orleans in May 2003 and just played a show on Halloween. Between these 2 dates they recorded their next release which is due early next year, a full tour should follow. I know I'm looking forward to that, taping or not! === From: "Bruce Burnett" Subject: Giving the band a copy of the show you taped Reply-To: peacefrog@primusvan.zzn.com Date: Fri, 28 Nov 2003 17:27:17 -0800 First of all, Yes, this is a 2 way street, I agree. I found myself less motivated to send or give (in person) bands copies of shows I taped, for a variety of reasons. If the band wanted a copy so bad, why don't they hire someone to tape thier shows? I don't like being accused of having a SBD patch, when I crank out a good aud tape. I don't like the vocals being turned down in the hall, so I have to go buy a SBD from the bands website. I don't like to make a suggestion about CD artwork (and it gets used) and not even receive as much as a "hey, that's a great idea". Critters Buggin hasn't played in years, so I don't think that is valid, and I don't tape Galactic so I don't care.
