Well, don't do it again. :)
Cool Edit 2000 doesn't have an option to remove digital noise, if that's
what you've got -- hard to tell if it was overload or digital noise from
your description. If you can afford them, packages including Adobe Audition
(formerly Cool Edit Pro) remove digital noise to some degree. To my ears,
none of them work perfectly, but the results are adequate with Adobe
Audition if you work carefully with each area of distortion.
If it's overload distortion, I'll leave that commentary to others. I've
found it very hard to shake.

What is the difference between branded and unbranded
cdrs? Can you label unbranded the same way? It seems
that unbranded discs dont even have that important
fragile top layer that some are talking about in
recent posts.
And as far as which brands to use isnt there only 3
manufacturers of cdrs: TY, Mitsui and who ever makes
them in Taiwan .
Also I thought I heard that mitsui are made in the
USA, or at least some of them are (or were?).

<< of the disk stock, cosmetic only. >>
This might seem like a "small detail", but that has been a known fact with
99% of those anal traders, like myself. If you have been trading for over 5
years, you will know companies like IMATION, Sony, and Memorex used to all
have "Made In Japan" disks, which were all frosted in the center ring. Once
they went to the Taiwan manufacturers - not only did that create a cheaper
price point, but the quality went down as well.
Maxell recently have marketed an "Xtra durable, non scratch surface" for a
higher end price point - and guess what ???????? They have a frosted center
ring, so they are TY disks with a Maxell label stuck on the face for double
the cost.
I can honestly say in 5 years, I have had ZERO problems with Japan made cdrs
(or USA's Mitsui). I am not ready to give up that kind of durability and
quality to the "Made In Taiwan" disks.
Remember: Its not if you coast disks or not - but its the
longevity/durability here.
My own personal opinion: I would rather have cdr traders start using USA
Made MITSUI disks and spend a little more money, than to think its
acceptable to use the Taiwan disks flooding today's market.

Hey All,
I wanted to throw in my 2 cents here...I think some people are missing
the point regarding this recent discussion. First off on media
brand...I have had several Memorex discs flake the dye right off the top
of the disc, and I treat all my discs with kid gloves. My preference is
hands down Mitsui, however, I have had good luck with Fuji(both kinds),
and TDK. I have always prefered Japan made media including DATs because
I have been told by several knowledgeable people that manufacturing
specifications and tolerances are much stricter in Japan. An issue I
haven't seen brought up is just the longevity of the dye. All chemical
compounds have definitive life spans, and as with dye being a chemical
compound, how long will it maintain the sonic integrity of the data it
stores. They say 100 year life for most CD's, but they've only existed
for about ~20 years or less. I would be intersted to see a study that
analyzes sonic integrity of a disc even 50 years old on a bit by bit
basis. Cd's will be obsolete in a matter of years, but alot of data is
archived on them, so I'm sure the integrity will eventually matter to
someone.
As far as writing on discs...I NEVER would write on the top of a disc
PERIOD. Reasons...looks--nothing worse than chicken scratch scribbled
on a disc. Chemistry--you don't know how the ink will react with the
surface of the disc. Just because it hasn't ruined any discs for you
doesn't mean it won't happen a few more years down the road.
Thanks. Peace.

> What is the difference between branded and unbranded cdrs?
Branded have the brand name printed on them. (Typically, that of the
manufacturer; if they're made for some other company whose name is
printed on them, that might or might not be considered "branded".)
> Can you label unbranded the same way?
Which type of labelling do you mean? You can write on them just the
same. Branding "interferes" with the writing (compare writing on
blank paper with writing on already-printed-on paper).
> It seems that unbranded discs dont even have that important fragile
> top layer that some are talking about in recent posts.
The Taiyo-Yuden inkjet-printable disks are unbranded, and have the
best top layer of any I've seen (it's extra-thick for the printing to
work).

There are more than 3 factories, and more than 3 manufacturers.

Question / Comment: Why did your company switch from having Taiyo Yuden
make your cd-r's to a company in Taiwan? What company now makes them in
Taiwan. I personally know a lot of people that are dissatisfied with the
change and will no longer purchase Fuji discs. Thank you.
It really didn't answer anything I asked.

Bob touched on a point here about the top of a disc that I would like to
elaborate on.....
Some folks can be a bit stingy w/ the sleeves they use to send discs in the
mail. This can lead to a disgruntled recipient. Shove a bunch of discs in
one sleeve, put them in a padded shipper and drop them in the mail, right?
WRONG! Sure, they may actually reach their destination in some form that
might be playable, but it's a gamble a trader should not be taking w/
someone they wish to remain in good standing with and potentially trade with
in the future. Would you want to receive damaged discs that are not playable
because someone skimped??
The worst is when a person puts 2 discs in the same paper sleeve w/ the top
sides facing each other and nothing between. I traded a fellow a show on DAT
for the 5/27/03 Trey show w/ Warren on disc. The person put 2 TY unbranded
discs in the same sleeve w/ the tops facing each other and no paper between.
I took them out together. I had to pry them apart. I did this w/ great
caution, but the coating from one disc stuck to the other. It actually
happened on both discs, ruining them both. I was really looking forward to
hearing this show, but instead I have 2 unplayable discs and only disc 3 is
playable....
2 discs in the same sleeve w/ the recorded side touching the top of the
second disc can result in damage as well. Friends have traded discs w/ me
like this in person w/ good results, but that's a totally different
situation than discs shipped through the mail......
Treat others the way you would like to be treated. Good karma goes a long
way!
Peace,
D

YES! Your mileage may vary with Sharpies, but sticky notes or
other adhesives are known enemies.
Someone made a comment about the coating on the top of the
disc. This coating is very important because the top of the disc
is actually more subject to damage than the bottom. You may be
able to polish imperfections out of the thick plastic on the bottom,
but the top is totally unforgiving if it receives damage.
Since I don't always know what the top layer is made of, I stay
away from Sharpies on the top except in areas which do not have
data burned. I've seen discs damaged by Sharpie ink on the top
for sure. The top coatings have improved, but why mess with it if
you expect the CD to still play in a few years?
Cheers

I've recorded bands live for many years. It is true what Chris is
spelling out. Most bands cannot afford to have there shows recorded all
the time. I charged for my services but it wasn't much. It wasn't
enough actually but like them I enjoyed it and am thinking about doing it
again. I'm currently doing sound for local bands. These bands can't
afford that never mind a recording. Although, cover bands usually fork
the money over when they need a decent live demo to promote themselves to
the clubs.
Original bands usually are not interested in a two track ambient live
recording especially if they're signed to a label. However, many of
mine have made it to CD's but that is an exception because I record a
little differently and I have lots of mixing experience. Don't be too
annoyed by these bands they're simply trying to get a head of the rest of
the pack. At the same time though they shouldn't take advantage of you
with out a at the very least a big thanks.
I recorded a multi band show outdoors one time and offered my services to
each band at very generous cut rate. One band wanted their tapes for
free. They kept hounding me for them. I eventually gave in. Perhaps
they just didn't have the cash or perhaps they were just trying take to
advantage of me. I figured they wouldn't have taken advantage of me if
they did have the cash and I was there to help the bands.
Sincerely,
Glen E Peladeau

Are any DAT-heads out there going to see Robyn Hitchcock at Maxwell's on
December 6? His shows at Maxwell's are usually some of his best, and this
time around he's asking fans to send in requests via e-mail, so I wouldn't
be surprised if a lot of rarities are performed. He's taper friendly,
although I'm not sure what his current policy is with regard to soundboard
patches. I have tickets to both shows, but there's a good chance I'll have
to miss them, so if you are already going, or would be willing to tape the
show in exchange for free tickets (offer only valid for experienced tapers
in the New York City area who agree to provide me with DAT clones or CD-Rs
of the show), please contact me at dolstein@dbllp.com.

Subject: Giving Bands Their Taped Shows
Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2003 16:03:49 -0800 (PST)
Hi Folks,
I just figured I would "chime in" on this one as I had
one such opportunity to do so....that is, give a band
a recording of themselves.
Basically, it was GREAT!!
I gave this to a friend to give to them, but tagged
along to the tour bus after the show. My friend
originally gave the recording to the guitarist...and,
as we all entered the bus...he put in the show.
I sat for a moment and watched the guitarist as he
"replayed" the beginning of the show...his part, that
is. I could tell...he was enjoying the show
tremendously.
Then a few moments later....in walks the lead singer.
He walked over to the fridge and dug out a
beer....when all of a sudden got this weird look on
his face as he tried to figure out what was playing
"on the radio." He said, what's this(?)...but, he
already knew as he could hear himself singing from a
week prior.
Then he started to "dissect" the recording...via his
own part. He made comments between songs like, "this
is my favorite song from our album," and so on. He
was also digging it very much.
The night moved on...and, the drummer comes in and
sits next to the guitarist. He starts talking, and
stops talking mid-sentence. He listens for a
second...and realizes that it is him on the
drums...and, then everyone explains to him what he's
listening to. Like the others, he starts "playing the
drums" just as he had during the concert.
To really make my day...all of a sudden the singer and
drummer started giv'n the guitarist a bit of "shit"
for "dink'n around" between songs! What were you
doing? They asked! It was great to see them all
relive the show they played a week ago.
Personally, I enjoyed the fact that they enjoyed the
recording and have made arrangements to send them more
copies.
Oh, the bassist was drunk off his ass(!) on this
day...as it was his birthday. So, I didn't get to see
his reaction...but, I have a surprise for him....I
have the concert they played on the night we visited
them in the bus...complete with Tap Root singing happy
birthday to the bassist during their set.
Everyone was decently happy...except their manager...I
don't know what his thoughts were...he seemed a bit
irritated....
Anyway, this really made my day. Just to see them
enjoy themselves was enough for me. If they decide to
use the show I recorded for whatever
purposes....that's fine with me.
To all a good night!
Also, I'm looking for some Eminem...and Ludicris for
my nieces...if anyone has recordings of these two
bands...feel free to e-mail me for trade
possibilities...
Rock On!!
Marv

I do send bands copies of shows I have taped, but only bands that
can't afford an engineer, and respect my recording techniques, as
much as I respect their playing.
Phil T, I really wish it did cost $4 to tape and send the band a copy
of the show. Critters Buggin did NOT play this year in NOLA. It was
Critters Vidovich, and Malachy Papers.
