The easy way to logically get around this issue is:
1. Start with a set of source .wav files - the datum.
2. Burn 'em to an audio CD-R.
3. Extract 'em with a non-Plextor drive, using a properly configured
EAC setup, including read offset.
4. Compare CRCs (or use a SHN tool to make SHN versions and
MD5 sigs) from the source files and the extracted files.
This gives you a valid basis for comparison, because the source
files are known quantities. If you don't understand this, or
haven't been able to figure the process out yourself, . . .
I've done this numerous times, with Phillips, H-P and Sony drives,
and unless there's something physically wrong with the disc,
I've always been able to obtain bit-perfect reads.
Yes, Plextors are *less likely* to produce read errors (and I
run a Plextor 40/12/40), but to say that anything BUT a Plextor
WILL produce errors is just plain, and demonstrably, wrong.

I've read the recent posts about CD-R longevity and thought I was being
careful. Now, I read that Mitsui and TY unbranded silvers may be as
susceptible to failure? Any details? I'm relatively new to taping, so none
of my DAT > CD-R masters are older than three years old. No flaking, yet.
And I keep them in cases, not sleeves, so nothing touches the disc in case
that may be a factor in failures.
The company I work for makes small runs of proprietary software, and we
have lots of masters from 98 and later on Mitsui unbranded silvers that have
shown no signs of flaking. They're all in cases, too. Maybe your storage
solution was your problem?
Is inkjet-printable media really the safest way to go? It's only about
5 cents more per disc than regular media, which is no biggie for mastering,
IMO.
On a semi-related tangent, if I need to start making archive copies of
my CD-R masters, does DVD player >digital out> standalone burner introduce
errors like non-Plextor drives? ;-)

Your PAL camcorder won't work with your NTSC VCR or NTSC TV. The "NTSC
PB" function is probably for playing NTSC miniDV tapes on your PAL
miniDV.
So to go
PAL DV -> VHS - not going to happen without a multiformat VCR PAL DV ->
DVD/VCD - do it through a PC (or mac) with a firewire connection. You
can make a PAL VCD (should work even on most NTSC dvd players), a PAL
DVD, or convert the DV to NTSC (vegas video 4 does this very well) to
make NTSC DVD/VCD. And you can always copy that NTSC DVD to NTSC VHS.
Good Luck.

When I am mailing a pile of discs to someone and don't have proper sleeves,
I just put each CD-R separately in a baggie. That keeps them separated
easily enough, and adds a bit of padding. The recipient can always reuse
the baggies for something.
I was wondering...
Why are active cables called "active"? Is it because they are supplying
the mic capsule with power? Don't regular mic cables supply the mic with
power?

Is there anyone/ any group on the web (probably based here in UK) which
records and archives BBC Proms FM or TV broadcasts --- I'd like to get
hold of dats/cds of a few I've attended over the years but for some
reason haven't managed to record at the time, even though they usually get
repeated at least once during the season. I'm not a major obsessive but
curious if people have big classical trading lists in the way many here do
for other kinds of music....
just wondered

Date: Wed, 3 Dec 2003 21:45:32 -0800
I was looking at getting a new digital sound card, when I started looking at
the Egosys U24 or the M-Audio Audiophile USB. I thought the convenience of
being able to take these anywhere with me without having to tear apart my
computer would be great.
All I would mostly use it for, would be to transfer DAT's to the hard drive.
I'm just curious if anybody is using either and how they like it.
Or would it be better off for me to just pick up a new digital soundcard
like an Echo MIA midi?
Thanks!

I guess the Office Max deal of 30 Fujis on a spindle for $1 is also
3.3 cents/disc.

If you get the CompUSA Fuji/Japan deal this week: 75 discs in
Jewel cases for $10 after rebate - figure the jewel cases are worth
10 cents each - then the discs are only 3.3 cents each!
The discs are the regular made-in-Japan discs (they say it on the
disc) just like the famous 50-pack spindles.
One bad thing, the one-sheet "card" in the front of each case is
printed dark blue on both sides, so you can't write on the card!
Another, every disc is individually wrapped - that's 78 things to
unwrap, arghh!!
But 3.3 cents per disc ??

Subject: ADC building help needed
Date: Thu, 4 Dec 2003 04:30:56 -0800 (PST)
Hello,
Who can help me build the small ADC that I am looking
for? This could complete my taping rig.
I am thinking of a small box, based on a few standard
SMD chips that delivers (almost) perfect CD-quality
audio specs. Powered by a Li-Ion cell, having a coax
SPDIF out.
Ability to power my small mics as a bonus. (piggy-back
board?)
The device doesn't need a big pre-amp. Some
amplification and/or atennuation is enough. No phantom
power.
I have no wide technical understanding but know just
enough to perhaps dig up some chips or other parts. I
can do soldering but no SMD.
You being from Europe or the Netherlands may make
things easier but I do not want to exclude anyone!

if you have not heard these guys before they are
amazing,
sounds like Tony Furtado Band, The Slip, a tiny taste
of
Critters Buggin, a smidge of Primus, an some straight
up
rockin new grass style with the traditional blue grass
mixed
in.
i can't find anyone who has any of these guys live, i
have a CD
that my bro gave me ( which i am still trying to find
) of some live
tunes, a video an some other stuff on it, this was
handed out
at some shows i believe....?...all i have left is the
cassette in my
car that i listen to non stop....
i will trade for pretty much anything from these guys,
i have been to
etree, phishhook, and even the forum on their page,
and nothing. it's
like no one tapes them, which is a huge shame, they
are really something
to hear.
if you have any or no where to find any please let me
know, i can do BnP's
for them, trades, slave labor for a week on your farm,
so on. i need some help
on this here, come people let's see if any of you are
into hearing something
new and super HOT!.

* 1 pair Core Sound LCBs. Comes with attached mic clips and windscreens. These do not have a battery box, but an be powered by using the "mic in" on most DAT and MD decks. Great for low cost and low profile stealthing. Retail $90 new...Looking for $60 + shipping.
* 1 MP2 power cable. For running MP2 off external battery. Now that Sound Devices has discontinued the MP2, these cables will likely be harder to come by. Retail $30 new...Looking for $20 + shipping.
* 1 pair Shure windscreens. These are the HUGE screens made for running in even the windiest of locations (i.e. Red Rocks). Will fit any 19 or 20mm diameter mics. Retail $70 new...Looking for $50 + shipping.
* 1 AKG stereo t-bar. Pretty self explanatory. Retail $25 new...Looking for $15 + shipping.
If you're interested in any of this stuff, drop me an email at nickg@mindspring.com.
Thanks for the space!

Subject: Re: Insufficient packaging
Date: Thu, 4 Dec 2003 11:47:47 -0500
I thought I'd chime in on this thread. I am one of those guys that will
put 2 or 3 CDRs in the same sleeve and it has nothing to do with saving
$$$. I have access to huge pile of sleeves and saving a few pennies
isn't why I do this. For me, it is more convenient and makes more
sense. Whenever I get 2 or 3 discs in multiple sleeves I quickly pop
them into one. I like that better. I do not see how anyone could
explain to me how it is any different than how they come stacked on a
spindle. Okay, now they have been recorded on, so? Doesn't mean they
now scratch easier or whatever.
People do things there own way and that should be fine. Allow people to
make their own mind up and if they send you stuff in a way that bothers
you or it comes damaged (which in 15+ years of extensive trading has
never happened to me) then don't trade with that person. Yes, it is
that easy. Barking instructions on how YOU want things done or the
RIGHT way to make a trade is nonsense. Flexibility and being easy to
get along with gets you allot further in the trading circles than a ton
of silly rules that make little or no difference. I understand people
have important trading instructions (like media preference) but this is
not one of them. Pick your battles wisely.
That is just my opinion, take it or leave it. Actually, please leave
it. Use 2 sleeves per disc (double bag them) and then our sleeve sales
will double!!!!
Take Care-
Dan

I am looking for someone who can tape a show this Saturday night ( 12/06 ) at the Aladdin Theater, in Portland Oregon.
The show is a wonderful singer/songwriter by the name of David Wilcox. David is a great story teller as well as an incredible guitarist. If you have never heard him, you will not be disappointed. If you can help, I can arrange for you to get in and be able to tape, all that I need in return is a DAT copy of the show. Please e-mail me if you can absolutely do this on this short of notice. livetaper@hotmail.com
Peace & Blessings,
Stuart
