[Sorry I'm late with thie. I lost the USB cable for my digital camera]
This is pretty ridiculous. I don't know where they got that head, but I
can't imagine Oade feeding this kind of crap to people. I can't imagine
what they might gain from such FUD; maybe you'll get scared and quickly
rush your deck off to them for new heads if you've ever used a 90M tape.
I've lost a lot of respect for Oade.
For anyone interested, a few days ago I popped the cover off my M-1 to
clean the pinch roller. I decided to take a couple of digi pics of the
heads, etc. You can take a look yourself at what my M1 head looks like
after about 500 hours of playback and record with at least 95% of my
tapes being 90 meter:

I'm on the hunt for excellent quality Ryan Adams shows from the current short east coast tour. In trade, I have 48 Ryan shows from other tours and 11 Whiskeytown shows (most of them soundboards). I look forward to hearing from you!
Cheers,

Hello All, Radio Shack is selling #50 700MB/80 minute Philips 48X CDRs
for $4.99. Anyone have any good/bad experiences with these discs? With all
of the recent posts concerning CDR media quality, it certainly can get
confusing. I am using Mitsui Consumer Digital Audio blanks for archiving
my really important analog cassette/DAT masters. These discs have a brushed
aluminum type of face, very nice for writing on. The center of the disc is
crystal clear, with the numbers 0328 2136 0268 80 on it. Is there a
better quality media for archiving the shows that are most important to me?
(I am using a Sony CDRW33 deck for burning my discs, not a PC.)
Thanks, Robert James MacReady

Subject: Hello and a Sony hardware question
Date: 10 Dec 2003 23:23:32 -0800
Hi,
I just found this list while searching for a manual/info on a
Sony DTC-790 DAT deck I picked up. So far, I have mostly worked
with my PCM-M1 for recording purposes.
Anyway, I don't have a manual for the DTC-790 and ran into a problem
trying to record from the optical IN which is connected to a Sony
MD recorder. The MD contains a digital copy off a CD and when I
press REC on the DAT deck, with input set to optical, all I get is
UNLOCK on the display for a few seconds.
I do remember having read something about the Sony specific copy
protection stuff, but as I have that disabled on the PCM, I never paid
much attention. Unfortunately, without a manual I'm at a loss of what
the DTC-790 is a) trying to really tell em and b) how to perform the
mysterious unlock operation.
If anyone has any information on this, I would appreciate a response
Regards

Hey all,
Is there anyone in the Minneapolis area who will be taping the
Flops/Semisonic/Trip Shakespeare shows on Friday or Saturday at First
Avenue? If anyone is available, I will reimburse the ticket cost ($20) to
anybody who tapes and gets me a copy of either/both nights. Please
contact me if available.
Thanks,
Steve

I don't have a 790 manual, but I do have a R300 manual
(http://www.hoxnet.com/tape/manuals/) that has a blurb on the "UNLOCK"
message on page 9:
If "UNLOCK" appears in the display
The program source is not
connected to the deck
properly or is not turned on.
Make sure that the program
source is properly connected
or turned on.
Not really much help huh? I'd try to narrow it down a bit by trying
another optical source. If you get the same message, it may indicate a
problem with the optical sensor on your 790 (or in the output of the
MD--either way, a second source should tell you). Maybe it's just
dirty. Try a can of _Dust Off_ or equivalent.

Hi all,
Was in Bun Beg a few years ago and heard Donegal fiddler Francie Mooney
(father of Mairead Ni Mhaonigh) in a session at Huidi Beag pub. I can't
find any commercial recordings, and failed to record the session.
Anybody with session recordings of Mooney? (I don't have anything in
particular to trade, mostly classical, but we can talk.)

Anybody tape the 12-6-03 Denver show? Anybody going to the 1-23-04
show in Boulder? For those that don't know, Woven Hand is the latest
project of 16HP frontman David Eugene Edwards. Have some nice shows to
trade. Thanks,
Ragan

These may seem like basic questions, but I'm just
getting started so
please help me out. Does anybody use the free version
of ProTools (for OS
9) with OS X (10.2.6)? Any major problems? Do I need
to have a computer
with only the OS 9 on it? Is there a free ProTools for
OS X? If I transferred DAT to my hard drive using the
MBox (with ProTools 6), can I open the files in the
free version?
How are you transferring from your DAT to the hard
drive (if using the free version)? Is there any
alternative to buying the ProTools for MBox (if I want
to use ProTools)?
