What one mechanically aligns are the guides that determine the path of the tape as it moves around those heads. Then one also electrically aligns the timing of the switching of the heads as they relate to the tape moving in relation to the spinning heads. The response of the RF section is also optimized. These procedures are not done by "listening to the tape" or by "eyeballing the meters". One needs actually four distinct and expensive standards tapes (made one at at time on decks designed for the purpose), a frequency counter, a wide-band oscilloscope, RMS voltmeter, the proper adjustment tools, the service manual and experience. I have been servicing decks since the beginning. Point is, leave it to professionals. Oh, and if you really want to screw your machine up, just go ahead and muck about in the menus and transport with a screwdriver and adjust your way to a trip to the service shop. -- Happy Holidays! If you weren't going to buy it, you don't have the rights to it and you shouldn't copy it. That's the stealing part. Same with software. ============================== From: acffh Bob Dylan can complain all he wants about me making a copy of LOVE AND THEFT off someone, but if I was not gonna buy it anyway, it's hard for me to believe that it actually COST him anything, since he still has everything he did. Unfortunately after the 2nd (of 5) songs my recorder shut off mysteriously and I was unable to check it because I had a security guard in front of me and I was right next to Joeys drum tech. The worst part is they started taking requests, I decided not to be my usual professional self and started yelling for "Nobody's Fault" and THEY PLAYED IT! What is the best way to play this tape back thru my home Amp and record it onto a CD ? What patch cord do I need to go from the M1 into the back of my amp or Sony CD burner ? Please see if you can help me, this is the way I will probably play my taped shows back and somehow record them onto CDs. Also what M1 outlet jack is used ? Thanks, Tom ------------------------------ From: "MattB" Subject: DC offset Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2003 17:05:04 -0700 I recorded Garaj Mahal last weekend to my using SP Premium AT slimlines (AT-933) > SP BB > JB3 . It came out pretty nice, but I noticed something I've noticed on other recordings I've made with these mics (on my former recorder, an M1). When I look at the wave from in CoolEdit (or any other similar app) the waveform is much longer on the tops. So if the top is hitting 0 dB, the bottom is only peaking at -6 or so. The effect is more pronounced in louder settings. I've used different mics (Oktava MC012s which I've just sold) and did not see this, so it makes me think it's the mics or battery box doing it. I asked Chris at SP about it and he insists that it must be my soundcard (even when I explain that the JB3 transfer doesn't go through the soundcard - whatever) needing to be calibrated with DC offset. I just don't buy that for the obvious reason that this never passed through my soundcard, and older recordings that did went SPDIF from DAT to my Hoontech DSP24v which doesn't even get resampled. I guess I could fix it in CoolEdit by adjusting the DC offset until the waveform is more centered, but I'm giving up headroom here. To avoid clipping I have to keep levels lower than I would if the top wasn't so tall. I'd like to try and fix this, and if possible I'd like to do it without having to buy new mics (out of the question for a while). Does anyone have any suggestions? I asked about this once in the past and was told it was the way the SP battery box powers the mics. If I could get away with getting a different battery box I might be able to do that. Any suggestions appreciated. Also, LMK if anyone wants this show via FTP. It sounds good and it was a pretty small crowd in a small club (The Eldo in Crested Butte, Co). SWG ------------------------------ From: jlizard Subject: Suggestions for Laptops with 2 PCMIA Slots for Multitrack Recording Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2003 23:29:28 -0500 I am looking for suggestions for a laptop that can support 2 Nuendo Multiset Units that will require 2 PCMIA cards. My current Alienware laptop only has one PCMIA slot. This will need to be a very fast large hard drive for 16-20 track channel recordings mostly at 24/48 or less likely 24/96 multitrack recordings. (I am still leary of hard drive failure and have had this happen, so I run a 16/48 dat back up off my AD2K+). I am open to any suggestions. Is anyone out there running 2 Nuendo multiset units together for more track channels for multi-track recordings? Also does anyone know if the stand alone hard disk recorders are having similiar issues with hard drive failure while running 16-24 track recordings? ------------------------------ From: Keith Bode Subject: Re: Samsung and Panasonic DVD Recorders and Clapton Blues Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2003 21:40:30 -0800 > > >my friend noticed that the samsung r4000 and the Panasonic E50 are >really the same unit (but the samsung is a lot cheaper cost-wise). who >is really making these and why are they doing it this way? > I hadn't even checked out the Samsung unit. Samsung has built to much crap, and I don't even look at their stuff. I had gotten a copy of "Nothin But The Blues" with Eric Clapton, filmed by Scorcese, in 1994, on VHS. Warner had made some VHS copies and was going to release it, then didn't. I managed to locate a copy, and bought it. I woould like to transfer it to DVD. I've looked at the Panasonic's, but cash is just to tight now. I'll check out the Samsung's. I woould definitely take donations to the cause of getting the DVD recrder for copies of the film, but I think that would be bootlegging. The Panasonic unit's only burn DVD-R and DVD-RAM, so there might be compatability problems with peoples DVD player's. I was certainly happy to see the VHS tape for sale on eBay. This is suppsed to be a copy of the original film, not the PBS broadcast. I was bummed when I got it. The case was broken. I sent it out to be repaired, and I hope to have it shortly. I still haven't seen it. ------------------------------ ** FOR YOUR REFERENCE ** To unsubscribe from this digest, please send email to dat-heads-unsubscribe@datheads.phish.net If your email address has changed, you may (optionally) send the message to dat-heads-unsubscribe-oldaddress=olddomain@datheads.phish.net and the old address will be removed.
