From: Dan Gale <dgale@northcoast.com> Subject: Re: Taping at GAMH Date: Sun, 28 Dec 2003 08:43:26 -0800 If I'm not mistaken, the GAMH is now run by the folks who run Slims in SF= - Slims has a long history of trying to jack people for Sbd access - not= just tapers but the actual band. I know when Cesar Rosas played there w= ith his solo band back in '99, I was told that they wanted something like= $500 or $1000 for him to plug his ADAT into the Sbd. He told them to go= to hell and ended up plugging it in anyway. I'm not sure of the legalit= ies of such charges but this isn't something unique to these venues. Un= ion venues are imfamous for not allowing access unless the right palms ar= e greased - places in LA like the Greek Theatre and Hollywood Bowl come t= o mind - good luck getting a Sbd patch there even if you are the FOH engi= neer for a band (unless of course you do a stealth Sbd) - I imagine some = greenbacks would change this policy or at least have them turn their back= s but hard to say. Your best bet for these sorts of venues is to know th= e band's manager and/or soundman and have them plug you in - this is best= done at load-in/soundcheck when no one is paying attention from the venu= e I know I've plugged into the Sbd at the GAMH about a year ago and the ven= ue never said anything - not sure if they didn't notice but I didn't real= ly try to hide things. The band's soundman plugged me in and that was th= at - I never said word one to the venue folks about taping. As far as audi= ence taping at GAMH, I've never run my mics there but if I'm not mistaken= , the prefered gameplan is to get one of the tables in the side of the ba= lcony and suspend your mics over the dance floor in front of the PA speak= ers (assuming it's not a "lip of stage" taping show) - I'm sure there are= some GAMH veterans out there with more info.=20 From: "Kenneth Thomas" <ylt@sunsquashed.com> Subject: Re: taping @ GAMH Date: Sat, 27 Dec 2003 12:47:03 -0600 (CST) >> >> From: Bruce Burnett <dubcentralstation@yahoo.com> >> Subject: taping @ GAMH/oversaturated bass/fixing Tascam CDRW700 >> Date: Fri, 26 Dec 2003 20:56:08 -0800 (PST) >> >> GAMH is weird about taping/tapers. Be >> prepared to go stealth. >> > =20 > I don't know if the GAMH owner knows about it, but you need to inform=20 the GAMH owner and the band(s) that played that night that this shit is=20 going on. I'd also let EVERY band playing there know that GAMH sells sbd = access for $500. You might even want to drop a line to some of the=20 record labels. A few big acts that book the Fillmore instead of GAMH=20 might "change some minds" or "get some people fired". Clubs with strict=20 rules against taping are one thing, but profiteering from tapers is=20 downright evil. Kenneth

From: analog414@comcast.net Subject: ? What is the most musical DAT portable. Date: Sun, 28 Dec 2003 17:37:21 +0000 There are three DAT units I believe I can buy. Sony M1, Sony D8, Tascam DA-P1. I do not care about convenience or history on repairs, ONLY how musical the recorder is when put under a microscope stereo system. I can stealth with the other three DAT units. The Tascam LOOKS to be the best but I want to hear from ONLY you people who have owned or compared these units side by side. Thank you in advance for any help and happy holidays. Best Regards Rick

From: Matthew Thayer <mattt317@yahoo.com> Subject: Great American Music Hall Date: Sun, 28 Dec 2003 10:41:00 -0800 (PST) I met the owner of the Great American once, she was talking thru the entire set of the Peasall Sisters performance at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival this past October. (a very quiet, 75 fans in a huge park field show) I actually didn't "meet" her but she did stop talking long enough to send out her security guy to ask me to stop taping. It's a shame the GAMH was bought by the same aggresive, un-friendly folks over at Slim's 333.... There's a reason none of my favorite shows are from these 2 clubs this year.... and the Great American could be the best in the city.... but it's at the bottom for me... no Slim's is the worst... ( Hey, owner, if you read this, why don't you take a big fire hose to Slim's, it smells....) BEST CLUB accolades goes to the Fillmore, Bottom of the Hill, The Parkside and Kimo's .... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! From: jlizard <jlizard@direcway.com> Subject: Recommedations for Digital Soundcards that do NOT resample Date: Sun, 28 Dec 2003 21:46:35 -0500 I am in pursuit of a digital soundcard to archive my DATs directly to my computer's hard drive via spdif connection. All recommendations would be appreciated. I am aware the soundblaster audigy2 Zs must resample all incoming data through spdif. Other suggestions would be appreciated. I was considering the RME HDSP9632 but would like to find a cheaper one that provides direct digital transfers. Brian
