I'm thinking about getting into PDA recording. I see that Core Sound
make accessories for PDAs that allow you to make high-quality recordings.
These accessories run about $600 though... the CF card plus D/A
converter. They also say that if you have Core Sound Binaurals, you
still need the battery box for that. All this adds to the bulk. From
the looks of the pictures, the D/A converter appears to be larger than
the PDA itself.
I see that the HP models (like the IPAQ 2215) have a microphone input
(doubles as headphone output) so some kind of built-in recording
capability is there already. Can a unit like this record CD quality
audio (44.1 wave files) without additional accessories?
I assume that the unit can do some analog-to-digital conversion of it's
own, otherwise how could you use a microphone input? I see there are
software programs available from a variety of third-party sources to
record high-end audio with PDAs.
My question is, if you buy a 2215 and get the third party software, can
you plug in a microphone and record CD quality audio?
It's nice to think that for $600+ additional, you can record at 96 kbs,
but for the moment, most of us listen to live recordings on CDs.
Can anyone shed light on this?
Thanks.

Greetings,
I'm currently running a dio2448 on winXP. Previously I had it running on 2kpro, problem free. The c-media chip generic drivers are the key. There's a yahoo group for the chipset (not very active, but very helpful, and the solutions are probably in the archives. The group name is: "cmi833x"
I have included the response of a representative that appeared on the list briefly, a veritable messiah for my problems. HTH.

The AD converter built into iPAQs is nowhere near CD quality.

Hi..
On Dec 28, JP asked in Digest 972:
>Hello Im trying to put the audio tracks from a dvd
onto cdr to play in my car
>...does anyone here know how the hell to do this? I seem to be the only person
>who wants to do this...HELP!!
Set your DVD player's audio options to "PCM Only," in other words not streaming, not Dolby, not 5.1, etc. The output will (should?) be 48k samples with SCMS asserted. Peak levels seem to fall in the -12 to -16 dB range, so you may not exactly fall in love with what you get. Mostly the audio will have been compressed going onto the DVD, another reason the sound won't be superlative.
Getting onto the CD-R will require resampling to 44.1k at a minimum, possibly SCMS-munging and/or level adjustment, but the results. (within the limits of all this monkeying with the sound) should be quite pleasant in an automobile. You might even want to add volume compression (about 2:1) to lower the dynamic range to something more appropriate for a car's operating environment.
Hope this helps,
Gary Gilliland

Hey all,
I have a DPA 4061 with a modified connector (currently an RCA) which I'd
like to sell. I can attach (professional quality) a different connector if
you prefer, either one that I have, or one that you send.
I'd like to get $130 (sort of the middle of the ebay range, if I recall).
Also, if anyone has one or more DPA or HEB 4060's, for sale, trade or trade
+ $, please let me know.
Thanks,
Mac
