hi,
i taped the early show at maxwells last nite. it was a request gig, so
some very obscure songs were played. deni bonet was there with violin on
some songs. the sound is probably as near perfect as it can get. the guitar
was mixed a bit low in the beginning, but as he picked up steam and played
harder, it wasnt a problem. if you want it, drop me a line.
ps- looking for the late show, of course
have fun,
Mike Hooker

I have a 4CD bootleg set that I've enjoyed, titled "Good Morning, Vietnam,"=20
that I bought at a record convention years ago. It contains nice stereo=20
soundboard recordings of the complete Benefit Concert For Vietnam Veterans h=
eld at=20
The Moscone Center in San Francisco on May 28, 1982. This is an interesting=
=20
concert featuring complete sets by The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Starship, Co=
untry=20
Joe McDonald & Friends, plus a jam set with Boz Scaggs and John Cipollina=20
sitting in with The Grateful Dead. I've looked around and this doesn't seem=
to=20
be in general circulation so until something with known geneology surfaces,=20=
I=20
thought I'd liberate this bootleg set and spread it around a bit.
I'll take a few B&Ps from each list and will trade it as much as I can. If=20
you'd enjoy a trade, please send a list. I'm interested in all kinds of musi=
c,=20
but I'm also specifically looking for a bunch of the more obscure sets from=20=
the=20
1982 Jamaica World Music Festival, so any help with that would be very=20
welcome. Here are the tracklists and details. Stu

Known Flaws:
The first Country Joe song has a tape malfunction in the middle for a few=20
seconds. Truckin has a split second dropout during the post-song jam. The De=
ads=20
drum solo has a minor splice (probably where cassette masters were flipped)=20
with only a few seconds missing and Johnny B. Goode cuts right before it en=
ds.=20
The Starship set seems to be from a different soundboard (possibly FM?) sour=
ce=20
and is not quite as clean sounding as The Grateful Dead & Country Joe McDona=
ld=20
sets. Overall, quite nice and a lot of good music.

A 60-gig Nomad ($350) will record 44.1k/16-bit for over 80 hours, and will
take other bit/sample rate inputs. I'd hate to go back to worrying about
disc swapping in the middle of two-hour sets, and why would you bother? The
JB3 is cheaper (or as cheap), requires no external media (at $7 per), and
holds essentially a whole tour at 44.1k/16-bit. It will dump a three-hour
show to your computer over firewire in five minutes or less.
We've not tested it completely, but have found (accidentally, at first,
while patching at one show) that the optical digi-in on the JB3 will take
48k/16 and 48k/24-bit inputs without batting an eye. Has anyone else tested
feeding a JB3 other word lengths and/or sample rates? Will the thing take
192k/24-bit input? (We can't A>D at those lofty rates) Is the 3-hour file
size limitation affected by varying input type? I, for one, would love to
hear some results...
I'm just sayin' -

When I first started taping and doing DAT->computer transfers,
spinning-sound.com had a page that described how to set up a computer
running Win98 for digital audio. Does anyone know of a site that has
info on how to optomize WinXP?
Also does anyone know of an easy way to remove pops from a WAV file. I
have otherwise excellent sounding copies of Lou Reed 4/21 and 4/22 that
I would like to correct. I tried using Soundforge, but it is very
difficult to detect pops while trying to look at the WAV. Besides, the
replace and interpolation options for repair don't seem to work very
well in this case(I have used them successfully on other files).
Thanks in advance for any help.
