The best deal going in powering something like the M1 is the PowerPlant CD
player battery:
http://www.pwrplant.com/cd.html
It's the size of a CD, runs an M1 for 7 or 8 hours, charges with your
existing wall-wart, and only costs $18. I used one for several years and had
nothing but good experiences.

Get some of the new 2000 mAh NiMH batteries from radio shack. About $20
for 4 batteries. They'll recharge just fine in the sony charger and
they'll last about 4-5 hours in an M-1--longer than a 90M tape.
Other than that, you'll have to go with a bulky external SLA (with
voltage regulator--expensive) or D-cell sled.

have you tried using lithium batteries?
everyready makes lithium AA "photo" batteries that cost around $4-5 a pair
if you can find a "cheap" supplier (radio shack sells them for around $8,
but i can get them in drugstores for under $5, here in the USA anyway)
i get roughly 7-8 hours recording time out of them with my d100 (note:
leaving the light off most of the time)
a quick search on the 'net & i found a bunch of info & some vendors:

- WOW! a good price for an 8 pack (under $20!!) - unfortunately they are
"not yet available?"
.....and many more links....
does anyone actually know a good/reputable/CHEAP supplier for the
energizers??? i bet alot of us use these (?)
hope this helps,

yes! best ive found is home depot or office depot. thay have the 4 packs
for $9.99 and office depot has 8 packs for $18.99.. but last time i was
at office depot they had coupons for $2 off a pack.
fyi, i easily get 2 full dead/phish shows on my M1 with the light on, and
still had all inidicator bars lit after the second show. then i use them
in flashlights, cameras, etc.
