From: Bill Tetzeli <btet@adelphia.net> Subject: Need to buy a DAT deck strictly for playback (2 yr. project) Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 11:51:03 -0500 I'm about to start a two year project of backing up someone's live tape collection to CD (the recording method will be SRC>Waveterminal U2A>computer (.wav)>CD). A lot of his tapes are DATs, and since I'm a total DAT newbie I figured this might be the place to get some answers. Basically what I'm looking for is my cheapest reliable option in buying a deck that will be used for nothing but 6-8 hours continuous playback each day for about two years. Assuming I buy brand new and follow the manufacturer's maintenance specs, does it matter if I go with a really cheap deck? Do I have to get a home unit, or will a Sony D8 do the job? Are there any playback issues even if I do take good care of the deck? Thanks for all the help in advance. Bill Tetzeli
From: "Jake Lewis" <taperjake@hotmail.com> Subject: D8 Pricing; ISO Bisco/New Deal NYE Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 14:40:20 -0500 Hey all out there in DAT land. What's the going price on a moderately used and well-maintained D8, with the original wall wart adapter but minus the battery sled? I'd throw in a Core Sound 7-pin SPDIF I/O cable too. The deck has had its head regularly cleaned (about every 25 hours of head use) and is in perfect working order. There's the minimal bonus of a couple identifying stickers (which could be easily removed): an MMW kokopeli (that weird symbol illyB drew for their logo) and a Cosmic Wimpout star. (Cosmic Wimpout is a legendary dice game that lead the Grateful Dead to issue a statement in the 70s asking fans to "please stop stickering our tour bus. We love Cosmic Wimpout too, but we don't need thousands of little orange stickers all over our bus.") If the missing battery sled drops the price significantly, I could track one down and include that in the package as well. Also, does anyone out there have this past New Year's NYC Disco Biscuits and The New Deal show for trade? I have lots of both, and a bunch of other shows to offer (Jazz Mandolin Project, Yonder Mountain String Band, Phish, Keller Williams, The Funky Meters, Trey Anastasio, etc.) in trade. From: Colin Liston <cliston@cs.utk.edu> Subject: Taj Mahal taping Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 15:19:40 -0500 (EST) Well I went to see Taj the other night, no I didn't tape, but I did ask the soundman who had a minidisc plugged into the board, if he minded if people taped Taj's shows. He said, no board patches, BUT he said mics, NO PROBLEM. Now this was from their soundman who said he was new, but that is what the man said. Go tape TAJ! thanks colin
From: rjmacready <cbesevenseven@fast.net> Subject: RE: Fuji vs. Mutsui for archiving Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 17:34:16 -0500 Hello DAT-Heads, I know the "CDR quality issue" has been visited quite regularly. I did check the Digest for applicable posts, and found some info, but I still have a question. I have some DAT/Cassette masters that are near and dear to my heart. I was using Mitsui for personal archiving, but got out to my local Best Buy today and talked them into giving me #100 of the "Made In Japan" Fuji CDRs (2 x 50) for the advertised $14.99. I managed to avoid letting them give me the #100 spindle of Fuji's that were made in Taiwan.( My winning argument was the ad pictured (2) #50 cake boxes...) Seeing as I only want to do this archiving job once, am I being foolish trying to save 50 cents a disc by going with the Fuji's? Or, perhaps, am I ascribing too much faith in the quality of the Mitsui's? Thanks Heads, R.J.MacReady
From: "DRider" <Farflung@comcast.net> Subject: GD 2/15/73 DAT offer Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 19:42:38 -0500 It was 31 years ago.......... .....on 2/9/73 when the Grateful Dead, not to be confused w/ "the Dead" - started the most historic and improvisational tour of their career. Dan Healy has said that when the boys struck the first notes of Promised Land that all the tweeters blew in the "Wall Of Sound".... The Grateful Dead taught me many things through all my travels. Ultimately, they are the reason that I became a taper. There was a great sense of loss when Jerry died. The main loss for me was the loss of community. But that sense of community lives on in the spirit of the taping community. I was exposed to the Grateful Dead in college w/ all my friends. A live tape would come on and I would think, "where did this come from?" It took me a while, but one day a friend was playing the second set of Dane County Coliseum 2/15/73 and I just had to get a copy. He let me borrow his copy and that was my first Grateful Dead tape. It's still one of my ALL TIME favorite shows. So to mark the anniversary of Spring Tour 1973, and give something back to the taping community I am offering 2/15/73 Madison, Wisconsin on DAT to whoever wants it. This ain't no hobby.... It's a way of life! Peace & Jerry D-Rider
