From: "Digit" <digit@redwing.net> Subject: GD tape saturation question Date: Fri, 20 Feb 2004 10:21:57 -0600 I have often wondered what is actually going on with some eras of Grateful Dead soundboard recordings. In particular, I was listening to the amazing performance from Roosevelt Stadium 8/6/74 yesterday during a road trip. I am working under the assumption that this was recorded with a reel-to-reel set-up as their are evident tape changes during the performance. What I am curious about is what appears to sound like a ringing/buzzing noise that can be heard through various portions of this and other recordings. They seem to be coming from sections of the recording where there is a lot of dynamic range esp. in the bottom end. However, it doesn't always appear when Phil is dropping those big bombs. I have always assumed that the tape was somehow overloaded and became saturated. I am probably using the wrong term for this occurrence but am interested in what that "ringing/buzzing" sound represents. Could it actually be sound that is being produced on-stage? Any feedback from this knowledgeable community would be appreciated! Dave

From: "Mark McKay" <mkm@cox.net> Subject: sad anniversary Date: Fri, 20 Feb 2004 20:37:00 -0500 It was one year ago today that The Station nightclub burned to the ground here in RI, killing 100 people and injuring another 200...some of them seriously. I will never forget that night...I fell asleep in my recliner while watching the local 11 PM news. At that point nothing had happened. I woke up about 2 AM, and there was live coverage of the fire on the screen in front of me. As it happened, a cameraman was in the club, shooting video for another story. You have probably seen that video by now...we saw it that night. I was up until 5 AM watching the horror unfold...and even then didn't sleep too well. For those that don't know, the fire was started when the band Great White set off a pyrotechnic display as they opened the show. The sparks turned the wall of foam surrounding the stage into a wall of flame, belching toxic smoke. Recent reports on the fire concluded that if you didn't get out of that club in 45 seconds, you didn't get out at all. You would have been overcome by the smoke, and then burned to death. Think about that for a second. How many times have you been in a club, and inched your way through the crowd, trying to get as close to the stage as you could? For me...literally hundreds of times. Those who did that at The Station that night are no longer with us. Like most people in RI, I had a "friend of a friend" who died in that fire...everyone knows or knows of someone who died. We're a small state, and it seemed to affect everyone on one way or another. Besides the fans, many employees of the club died, as did the DJ/host from the local rock radio station, Mike Gonsalves aka Dr. Metal, and a guitarist from the band, Ty Longley. The two brothers who owned the club, and the manager of Great White (he set off the pyro) have been indicted on 200 counts of manslaughter each. Despite a loud public clamor, no town officials who were responsible for licensing and/or inspecting the club have been charged with anything. The one thing many, including me, have learned from that fire is this...always know where the exits are in case you need to get out in a hurry. Do not automatically go for the main exit that you came in...most people will be heading that way too. There were dozens of people who died at the doorway of the main exit of The Station. They were piled up like cordwood after getting caught in the stampede of folks trying to get out. Be aware of your surroundings and you'll stand a better chance of getting out of a situation like that alive. Lets keep these people in mind, the dead and the injured, as it could have happened to any one of us. Mark
