Warm and accurate. The ART preamps are cheap, around $150 street, and are not pure tube, so people tend to put them down, but I think (along with a few others) that they are a real "sleeper" preamp. I'm amazed how quiet they are. Worth checking out, and, even if you move on to something else, your investment isn't great. ------------------------------ From: "MattB" Subject: Re: Pre Amp Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2004 17:16:47 -0700 I think you could come in way under budget with either a Denecke AD-20 or an Eiderol UA-5. The caveats are: The AD-20 does not supply phantom power, but I think those mics can be self-powered, can't they? The UA-5 doesn't work standalone until you modify it. You can buy them modded already or DIY. You will need to build or buy a battery pack for the UA-5 (but can get away with 9v on the AD-20) For either you will need a 7-pin cable (coax or optical). The benefits for both are you also get a better a-d stage than the D8's on top of a preamp in one box. I recently got a used AD-20 for about $200 and it was well worth it (I did modify the gain knobs because the stock ones are hard to operate). Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2004 16:36:05 -0800 EZ CD Creator is/was notorius for inserting tiny gaps (perhaps only a few millseconds) between tracks, even in disk-at-once mode. What you describe sounds like it could be a similar problem/issue. I'd stay away from Adaptec/Roxio burning software, period. Right now I'm using Fuerio and I love it! You can run the "demo" version forever, although it's well worth the 25 Euros that the author requests. If he's coming to your area, please try and make it to a show. He allows recording, sbd and Audience. His shows are cheap! $10-$15 and are well worth it. I'd like to get all of his shows taped so any help is greatly appreciated. Check here for more info: www.ChrisWhitley.com Many thanks. SUPERIOR QUALITY SOUNDBOARDS. Date: Thu, 04 Mar 2004 16:40:55 +0000 I've been a collector off and on since the mid 70's. Since that time, I have established many relationships with individuals who own clubs & venues, as well as people who have made a living mixing sound for a wide variety of national artists. These friends were and acontinue to be nice enough to allow me the ability to make soundboard recordings of many many acts. Many of the venues are mainly on the east coast, but my friends who toured and mixed sound made recordings of shows all over the US and overseas. I am aware that the individuals who trade on this page concentrate their efforts on making audience recording, but for the purposes of this particular post, I looking to trade with those of you who are in similar situations as myself. Kindly do not respond to this posting if you just are offering audience recordings. Those of you who are in a similar situation as myself, or who have made master soundboards of national artists & groups, please drop me a line if you are interested in possible trades (superior quality soundboards only). Thank you. ------------------------------ From: swsmith@ix.netcom.com Subject: RE: Portable Mixer and SSS / Advanced SBD patching... Reply-To: swsmith@ix.netcom.com Date: Thu, 4 Mar 2004 12:14:27 -0600 (GMT-06:00) Run a topic search on "Super Seven Soundboard" in the archives & you'll find several posts... (remember the " marks, however... 'Soundboard' seems to be mentioned in at least every other post... ;) ) You're going to need to show up early, and obtain the cooperation of both the artist and the sound engineer(s) to pull this off... ;) It's hard to stealth another mixer... =] The insert jack trick works specifically on Mackie consoles (tip=send, ring=return, sleeve=common) by plugging in a 1/4" TS cable "one click"into a TRS connector... _HOWEVER_ this is sometimes _NOT_ a stable connection, and if it shorts out will introduce noise not only on the recording chain but also on the mains. =| Some other consoles are also wired this way, others aren't. Better solutions are to patch the direct outputs (if the desk has 'em...), or tailor up a tape-specific mix through spare AUX sends, an independent B mix or set of Matrix outs. Stan Smith ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: Joe Thierry Subject: RE: Portable Mixer and SSS Date: Tue, 02 Mar 2004 23:22:04 -0500 Jason, Check in the DAT Heads archive. This was discussed at length around 97-98. Here is the link to Gary's original directions. http://www.solorb.com/dat-heads/digests/V3.700/D734#Msg0 It's basically using the insert jacks to get a direct out from each channel then mix using your own portable mixer. It's a good idea but you need more access to the SBD than a simple patch. Most sound engineers won't be willing to let you do this. Joe ------------------------------ From: "Steve Mew" Subject: dream theater tapers on this tour Date: Thu, 04 Mar 2004 12:59:10 -0800 for those of you doing the tour. the pdx show ran a little over 3 hours. about 2hr 40mins i guess if you don't count the 2 songs that were played on tape. first set ran about 90 mins (includes 2 songs on tape) and then a 15 min intermison. there was a (~5min) break before the encore. show started a little after 8:20 and ended about 11:30 from what i remember. have fun. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses.
