Keith,
I understand your point, but only to a certain extent.
Then again that goes w/ alot you have to say ")
Your questions are valid and I agree that the person making the request
should give as much info as they can and/or provide links to get you as much
of this info that is available. The more info they can provide, the better
the chance of getting someone to cover the show.
"who wants to...(see below)..?"
couldn't you have just described nearly every rock band that has ever
existed??
when have you gone to show and there NOT have been "a bunch of stoned
drunks"?
Phish phans can be stoned and drunk, ABB fans are notorious for being drunk
and rowdy and Spreadheads ain't far behind. I tape all these bands all of
the time. How did they get started? How did people find out about them?
Tapers who got out and covered the shows IS HOW!
Any taper who is afraid to take his equipment near beer or reefer is not
gonna find many places to record. Most bands play where alcohol is served up
in mass quantities. Just ask the coneheads ")
Hell, I have had more issues w/ fellow tapers who drink too much and get
sloppy w/ their beer than I have w/ fans...... it just happened to me last
weekend.
A taper by definition is someone who is adventurous and open to new musical
experiences.

Maybe I'm being a bit on the picky side, but I'm a little baffled by
posts offering people the opportunity to tape little known or unknown
bands, simply because they allow taping. What about the music? What
style of music are these bands playing? What's the scene like? Is
there someplace to check out some sound bites? I think about these
questions, and wonder, "Who wants to bring a few grand worth of
equipment to tape a band, and not even know if I dig the style of music
being played, and not know if the crowd is a bunch of stoned drunks who
will wind up falling on or puking on, a deck, pre, A>D batteryback and
god knows what else?" Also, "will I dislike the music, and want to
split after 5 minutes after doing all the setup?" Maybe I'm unique, but
simply because a band is "Taper Friendly" doesn't mean, to me, that I'm
going to be a happy camper as a result of having a tape.

Got new gear? Try it on a band you don't care if you mess up.
Wanna learn something? try new mic configurations or equipment settings
that you haven't tried before and swap stuff around during the set so
you have a decent shot at an A/B comparison.
Wanna make new friends? Maybe the band is hot and will be big and
you'll be the only taper. Maybe you get a special relationship with
that band for being the only one to tape them.
Maybe you get free beer for taping for the band.
Maybe they are playing at a club that is anti-taping and they can break
down a wall for you.
Just plain bored? Taping is about the only thing that gets me away from
work anymore.
And the number one reason for taping an otherwise uninteresting new
band: Curious babes.
If the band or crowd sucks, you can always leave.

Some people want their favorite bands taped and cannot afford and or do not
have the time to attend every show.
Some people will tape anything if its free.

This being a small device with little space inside I take it there is no =
hole to
punch in a paperclip and release the tape.
If you are operating it on batteries you might switch to an ac/dc adapter=
and see if
that improves the situation. If the deck behaves differently depending on=
the type
and strength of power then it is worth a shot.
You are dealing with a situation which the firmware has no immediate =
action for.
So getting access to the deck bypassing the automated securing of the =
tape ejection
mechanism when tape is activated ought to be the course of actual.
Get hold of the service manual (or perhaps someone here can chip in)
Look for a way to activate a "service mode", or disable automated =
functions. That is
a mode into which you can place the deck giving more access to functions =
normally
automated by the control of firmware, such as blocking the open mechanism=
when the
tape is out of the case and so on. If you can do this I am pretty sure =
you can open
it. It would be likely removing the tape when the tape is not correctly =
unmounted
will mean the end of the tape. But I take it you are not in the process =
of saving a
$3 tape when the tape is capable of damaging your Sony D7.

Nobody is objecting to requests for taping random bands. What started
this was a suggestion that when a request is made for taping a band
that isn't well-known, some _information_ about the band and its music
ought to be provided.

I realize that a lot of tape requests are for bands that aren't that well
known, but sometimes there's a chance that someone will tape a band because they
know of the band or requester in question, so they'll make the effort. I've
taped requested bands before because I had considered going to the show, and
figured it'd be worth it - and then the person making the request has ended up
taping something that I wanted, so it's a good symbiotic relationship.
Usually there is at least 0.01% chance that a band taping request will be
done, so I think it's worth it. In 2000, I asked that someone tape the band
Saint Etienne in Philadelphia & the East Coast, and a guy ended up taping them in
Philly as a favor for someone who saw my request. It worked out quite well,
and we both ended up happy. It didn't matter that nobody else helped me out,
because I only needed one person for fulfillment.
The "taper friendly" part doesn't interest me, because I'd stealth anyway,
but I'm unique that way. However, I can understand how it would be helpful for
potential tapers who prefer to tape with permission.
When the Philly Schoeps God asks for taper help, I would want to try to help
if possible simply because I know that I'd be helping out the genius who made
killer recordings of Paul and the Stones, and who knows what else - even
though my best intentions have never yielded a recording for him.
We're all fellow DATheads/tapers - if we can't at least attempt to help each
other, then who needs enemies? I wouldn't ask anywhere else for tapers, even
if the chances were worse than 0.01%. The worst that happens is that I don't
get help. Does anyone have good quality animal prints for sale?
Cheers

One of the ways to get turned on to something new is to take a chance. Taping is in my view a team sport. Sometimes you go out and do it because you know someone else will enjoy it. Maybe it'll come back to you.
Sometimes you tape just for the sake of taping. How many early Phish or WP tapes exist simply because someone taped for the sake of taping? You might not be glad you did until years later.
Another reason I like to tape is the adventure aspect. You never know what's going to happen. Maybe some people are intersted in recording because they want to get better or test out some new gear or mic patterns?
Perhaps you also might want to consider that others might be more open minded, more informed or interested in different types of music than you are. Also do you even have a rig Keith? If not then why do you care? Haven't we been through this here are the dates please tape debate around here before? Also nice bwt tax Keith for another one of your negative posts.

Yosi Piamenta is a great guitarist with a unique sound. Really worth
seeing. And taper friendly.
I'm always looking for ANY Piamenta shows, such as his regular gigs at

Here's the next gig:

For the curious, there are a couple of Piamenta shows available in shn

My Sony D100's Renumber Mode doesn't seem to work. Sometimes I have a tape
with duplicate Start IDs or they're mixed up a little so I use the Renumber
function. I rewind to the beginning of the tape, go into Renumber mode and
hit Enter. It does its thing, going forward, supposedly renumbering. Then
when it's done the tape, it rewinds to the beginning. I think it's done of
course. When I go through the tape again though, nothing has changed. The
numbers are still out of place.
Anyone experienced this or know what's wrong?
