From: csnmusic <csnmusic@optonline.net> Subject: ISO DEEP PURPLE & CPR Date: Fri, 12 Mar 2004 21:18:11 -0500 Looking for Deep Purple at the Beacon and a good show from the current David Crosby/CPR tour. Lots to trade.
From: "Stephen Pzynski" <stejampzy@hotmail.com> Subject: FS: Sony D100 Date: Fri, 12 Mar 2004 20:22:17 -0600 I got this in trade about 3-4 months ago and have only used it for about 30 minutes of playback time. It comes with: -pleather case -AC adapter (not the original; a Radio Shack one) It seems to be in excellent working order and the person I received it from just had it serviced by Pro Digital before he sent it to me (Paul Plotnik, I think?). I originally traded a DA-P1 for this unit and cash but it turns out I don't need an extra deck right now. Price: $400 Interesting trades considered. Thanks... From: "Rich Gomes" <RichGomes@comcast.net> Subject: Tape removed from D7! Thanks to all!! Date: Fri, 12 Mar 2004 21:37:28 -0500 Just wanted to thank all who sent suggestions on removing the tape from my D7. I really appreciate all the help!! -Rich If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed, if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a small chance of survival. There may even be a worse case: you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves. - Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill
From: "Justin Greenwood" <s0cref@comcast.net> Subject: Zebrahead Tapers Past/Present? Date: Sat, 13 Mar 2004 00:36:19 -0500 One of my favorite bands is playing a series of shows in the UK and on the west coast and I was hoping that someone might be taping them. The band is called Zebrahead and they are like an indie rock/punk band that put on a temendous show and are a lot of fun. I was hoping that someone might be checking them out and taping them. If so could you please let me know and hopefully I can get a copy of your tape. Also, if anyone has taped the band in the past or has any shows I would love to hear from you. I would really appreciate it. 03/12 - Carling Brixton Academy - London, UK 03/13 - Manchester, UK Manchester University - 03/14 - Barrowland - Glasgow, UK 03/15 - Corporation - Sheffield, UK 03/16 - Civic Hall - Wolverhampton, UK 03/17 - The Furnace - Swindon, UK 03/18 - The Garage - London, UK 03/19 - Concorde 2 - Brighton, UK 03/26 - Electric Theatre - Saint George, UT 03/27 - Desert Breeze Park - Las Vegas, NV 03/28 - The Rock - Tucson, AZ 03/29 - SOMA - San Diego, CA Later, Justin

From: David Mobley <dmobley@fastmail.fm> Subject: looking for taping policy/info on a few bands Reply-To: David Mobley <dmobley@fastmail.fm> Date: Sat, 13 Mar 2004 05:45:28 -0500 I'm seeing quite a few bands that don't have any official/established taping policy in a few days, and I'm wondering if anyone knows their particular stances towards taping and any advice for them? I'm seeing: British Sea Power, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Rasputina, and probably DJ Shadow (and others). If anyone's had any experience with these bands I'd appreciate a heads up, especially BSP and PGMG since those shows are next week and I need to know if I should be especially careful. I doubt it, but better safe than sorry, right?
From: Mark Mayhle <mark@mayhle.com> Subject: Lucy Kaplansky policy Date: Sat, 13 Mar 2004 06:40:19 -0600 (CST) I was forwarded an email from Lucy Kaplansky as of 2-3 years ago that gave permission to tape; wondering if anyone has more up-to-date info? Thanks, -- Mark Mayhle mark@mayhle.com
From: "teasinthatbooboo" <teasinthatbooboo@hotmail.com> Subject: Lucinda Williams: NOT taper-friendly Date: Sat, 13 Mar 2004 08:08:00 -0500 Went to see her last Sat. here in Charleston, and two full rigs were set up for the Bottle Rockets (opener) when I got there. Since I was late, I patched in instead of setting up a third rig. Fortunately. After the opener ended, five minutes before she came on, Lucinda's sound guy came to the 'board and said "No taping Lucinda. Take them down, now." As we lowered the stands and prepared items to cover the gear which was, naturally, running, the sound guy repeated, "No taping. I'm serious. That stuff needs to be turned off." Two minutes later, a venue employee showed up folded his (huge, meaty) arms, and said, "I am going to stand here and watch you disassemble your rigs, and then watch you walk them out the door of the venue." Both of which he did. While Lucinda started playing. I was 'allowed' to keep my gear bag at the soundboard since I hadn't set up anything but the D8, which I put away. Of course, the two others came back to the show with stealth gear, but it was well into the third song of the night by then. Still haven't been able to track them down to see how it came out, but I'm betting pretty poorly - big, bar-ish venue, halfway back from the stage, chatty crowd, 20% oversold, etc. I would have run omni Core-Sounds there at the 'board, but I know what kind of tape one gets with that, plus was on a date, so I skipped my only stealth option. So, to sum up, Lucinda ain't taping-friendly. If you go, go prepared. Great show, though. Anybody tape her this tour? : ^ ) ttbb

Maybe I'm unique, but >simply because a band is "Taper Friendly" doesn't mean, to me, that I'm >going to be a happy camper as a result of having a tape. Your question comes off rather like whats-in-it-for-me as in "if I don't = like what I taped for someone else I will hate myself for complying with someone = elses wish to have that show and putting my equipment at risk of damage". But I do not know wether you are like that. Someone who cannot bear not to make a recording of a show and risking = damage to the gear by the crowd acting up or coming home with a recording which = whateverway is not interestring to them all in the name of someone asking them to - should = not take the risks and should not act as if they will help another guy out. But given = someone asks for an unknown band to be taped might trigger curiosity. I suppose a person afraid to take any risk leaves the car at home and = walks to the pub in case someone drunk damages the paintjob. Of course that is = insurable. But the insurance doesn't recreate a masterpiece and won't pay for all costs = involved such as expensive vintage parts. .. If for instance you get a request to tape a band you never heard of and = respond asking for type of recording accepted and if there is any freebie = involved, like transport, beer or ticket compensation, you could also enquire about what= type of music the bands plays wether they have taping policy, the nature of the = taping policy. Your hookedness and the work needed to conceal if the policy is not in = that favour will determine wether your stealth gear is needed. Payhaps the request = comes from someone who can supply you with a snippet or refer you to a band webpage = which has snippets for download- no doubt also a biography so you can recognize = bandmembers from other constellations or what not. On the other hand if you've taped all you wanted to in your area and a = strange act is there, and someone offers you a trade of material you like or free = tickets for the show. Why not just treat it like any other band you are turned on to; do = the ground work, use Google for the bands information, type, crowd their taping = policy, verify at the door that the venue allows taping too (and that the band is in a = taping-is-ok mood). (Ask "Can I set my up over here?" as opposed to "May I tape?" if = the bands policy is yes you can, then it is only the house policy that overrules in= that direction.) You probably know the venue as you record stuff you already = like and know like in it when you can. You volunteer to work the night as a taper = because you are close to the venue, so it is familiar - so use your connections, showing = people who works regularly at a venue that this time you do this for some stranger = who has a show you like or will do the same for you and your favorite band will = give a little more respect about your taping activity. They might frown if you go for = something you don't usually bring the gear out for. Taping for others means expanding the horizon of music, not everything = new and around is on the radio/tv, someone wanting a band recorded means there is = interest in the band. And maybe it is warranted to invest more in that band if the band = is interesting. The social network built up over doing something for others = also play a key role when swapping with people who may then be willing to tape = something they wouldn't have thought to go and hear/tape for you. -breiler
