From: "Chet Ciechanowski" <chetski@adelphia.net> Subject: RE: SACD CD Player? Date: Tue, 23 Mar 2004 20:48:49 -0800 Tony, Most, if not all, SACD players output 2 or 6 analog channels. This is because the audio is not PCM encoded. Converting the SACD bitstream to = PCM would defeat the purpose of SACD, which is to promote a format that = proposes to be better then PCM. The players do have a digital output but it is active only when playing a standard CD or a hybrid SACD that has a CD = layer. If you want to get your feet wet without spending a lot of money, look = at the Pioneer DV563AS universal disc player for $149 at Best Buy and = Circuit City. This thing is amazing for the price. See http://www.audioadvisor.com/store/productdetail.asp?sku=3DPIODV563AS for specs. Other models are available from Sony, Philips, Onkyo, Denon, Marantz, and others, as well as some esoteric high-end manufacturers. You have to hear "Dark Side of the Moon" in 5.1! -Chet=20 ========= Original message ========== From: "Tony Guagliardo" <guagliardo@un.org> Subject: SACD CD Player? Date: Tue, 23 Mar 2004 17:38:56 -0500 Hey gang. I'm looking to buy a SACD player, preferably one with digital output = (but not absolutely necessary). Has anybody had any experience with one of these things? Can anyone recommend a particular model? Thanks in advance for any advice. Tony

It's quite affordable too. Hope this helps!

From: "Lerner, David S, ALABS" <dlerner@att.com> Subject: UK Taping Success Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2004 07:58:54 -0600 Hello Again, Just thought I'd let everyone know that my trip to/from the UK from = America went well. I got all my gear thru Customs on both sides of the = Atlantic with no problems. I even came home without losing anything, = which was a miracle considering how many "pints" I drank. The band I = taped was the Jefferson Starship, with Paul Kantner. When I left the US, my luggage got searched probably because it was real = heavy and full of cables. When I arrived at Heathrow, they just asked me = why I was here and stamped my passport. I was supposed to check in my = gear at their Customs, but I was so tired I just walked thru the line = that said "Nothing to Declare" because it was the shorter line. When I = realized I was out of the Customs area, it was too late to go back. When = I left the UK, they didn't search my luggage or my carryon bag full of = mic/deck/video camera. I bubble-wrapped my mic stand and checked it in = as luggage (with a FRAGILE tag) in a bag meant for carrying a chair and = it did not break or get scratched. I also video taped 1 show = (Southampton) with a video tripod. As expected, I saw no one else using a mic stand. The UK tapers taped = their mics to columns or to the soundboard. In the US, everyone uses a = stand so this was the major difference. Plus, most tapers tape on MD = instead of DAT or computer. Since JS is a taper friendly band, no one = was hassled at all.=20 Once I burn the cds, come over to JeffersonFamilyTrading@yahoogroups.com = for copies as we'll tree the shows over there. In conclusion, the = British fans are kind and fun to hang with. Especially in pubs! Dave Lerner

Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2004 09:20:49 -0600 I'm going to be taping George Lynch and Yngwie Malmsteen Friday night and was wondering if anyone who's seen them recently can give me an idea of how long they're playing? From: "Martin Klingmeyer" <martinwk@ptd.net> Subject: Soundcard with digital Inputs -THANKS Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2004 15:34:35 -0500 Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply (on and off list). I am so glad that I didn't just buy the Sound Blaster. I would have never suspected that it re-sampled or altered what it was fed. This seems counter intuitive. I have several options to consider, including a company I never heard of. This will keep me thinking for a little while. Anyway, thanks! -M
From: "Mark Rodriguez" <marod70@hotmail.com> Subject: stealthing advice Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2004 21:00:40 +0000 Anyone have any suggestions on when to use cards or hypercards in a stealth situation? I will be taping an arena show on Saturday with the stage being in the center of the arena. I will be about 15 rows up off of the floor. Is that too close for hypercards? I would really like to eliminate as much crowd noise as possible because Reno usually has some pretty obnoxious crowds (or at least at the Reno shows that I go to). As I am still realtively new to taping I would appreciate any advice or guidelines. Thanks so much, Mark _________________________________________________________________ All the action.
