Hi fellow DAT tapers,
any tapers from OZ out there?
A friend of mine will spend over 24 hours on a plane travelling to
attend 4 of the upcoming KISS may shows in OZ listed below. As he is a die hard KISS fan
I would like to surprise him with a recording from one(or 2)of the shows below when
he returns back to Europe after 2 weeks down under. Are any tapers in Australia going to
tape any of the KISS shows listed below?
KISS:
Saturday 05/08/04 Perth, AUS West Australian Cricket Grounds
Tuesday 05/11/04 Adelaide, AUS Entertainment Centre
Thursday 05/13/04 Melbourne, AUS Rod Laver Arena
Monday 05/17/04 Sydney, AUS Sydney SuperDome
Thursday 05/20/04 Brisbane, AUS Brisbane Entertainment Centre
If not,I would gladly like to pay you back for your ticket cost and blanks
if I get a free clone(or cdr copy)from one of the gigs above.Or eventually from a couple of the gigs above.
Tickets for the shows above went on sale 2 days ago and there are still good tickets left for taping any of the shows above.I know where a possible DAT or minidisc taper could order his ticket for any of the shows above from some reliable websites(ticketek.com,showbiz,ticketmaster7.com etc.)
Please
get in touch with me as soon as possible if anybody is planning to tape
any of the KISS shows above.I'm mostly interested in some good recordings from the Sydney 5/17,Melbourne 5/13 or Adelaide 5/11 shows above, but a recording from ANY of the cities above would be greatly appreciated.I am able to send money for ticket and blanks in
US money any day next week to the first taper who's responding to this
post.I am also in touch with several DAT tapers in Europe and USA who can
prove this is not some kind of a joke and that I will cover all your costs
if I get a free clone(or cdr copy)of any gig above. My impression is that it is
rather few tapers in Australia,but I really hope I'm wrong.To prove I'm
wrong PLEASE contact me directly at: duxous@email.com if you can
help.Thanks in advance,Kimmo

Most of you have probably heard of this book already. It's written by Mickey
Hart and is really fascinating. He covers the entire history of taping &
field recording, along with bits about the equipment used. It's also
autographed by Mickey on the first page.
My reserve is the same as the retail price.

Greetings!
I have forty KAO "KD4 Gold 60M" DAT tapes that have been sitting patiently
in a dark drawer waiting for good use. These are all sealed in their plastic
shells, with the white cardboard case holding each ten-pack sealed too. They
have all been stored at room temperature and have not been handled in any way.
I am looking for $2.00 for each (and prefer to sell all 40 to one person)
plus whatever shipping costs (no markup at all; shipping from Westchester, NY ).
Those who have traded with me over the years knows that I am honest and a
straight shooter; no nonsense and usually expeditious with transactions. Thanks
for your time.

Hello gang,
=A0
Chris Brokaw (www.chrisbrokaw.com) is embarking on a solo tour of Italy,
Spain and Portugal. Aside from playing a great semi-acoustic guitar, he
writes breathtaking songs & instrumentals. You might have seen him
playing with or opening for Evan Dando, or with Come ...... i cannot
recommend his concerts strongly enough. In my experience he is taper
friendly (i taped him several times) including SBDs where possible.
Would love to get some tapes from this tour. Feel free to write me for
Brokaw trades too.

Cheers!

i used to have a video tape collection. one of the best videos i had was a
black and white pro shot from roosevelt stadium in jersey city in 1976.
this has to exist on DVD at this point and i need to find a copy as i am
receiving a lot of pressure from the fella who originally gave me the
tape.... the tape was borrowed from me years ago and never returned or
found.
anyway, i would really like to trade either DVDs or selections from an
outstanding tape collection for this show. please.
kind regards,

Subject: Sony TCD-D100 ERASE function
Date: Sun, 28 Mar 2004 14:35:41 -0800
Can the TCD-D100 erase a tape's recording data? I have a little manual but
it seems like it can only erase the Start IDs. How do I erase the recording?
Do I just let it record with no input for the length of the tape? The thing
is, I want the tape to flash "Blank" when I re-use it after the erase.

To do that, you have to erase the formatting, which a deck can't do.
You need a powerful electromagnet designed for erasing computer-grade
tapes (one that erases cassettes isn't strong enough).
A deck can write digital silence over a recording, removing the
recording (but not to the point where the NSA can't recover it; I
recommend thermite for that).

Many tape programs for a computer based DDS drive have an erase
function. These just write blank data to the tape all the way to the
end, but they will show up as "blank" on most dat decks after this.
Also, if you just want a fresh start on a used tape, you only need to
erase the first 10 inches or so. This needs to be done with a powerful
magnet as Seth suggests. I use old "voice coil" magnets from dead hard
disks. These are powerful rare-earth magnets and are smooth enough not
to damage the tape backing. Just flip up and hold open the tape guard
(if you can't figure out how, you probably shouldn't even try) then,
with a soda straw or something similar, pull out several inches of tape.
Run the business side of the magnet across the the back side of the
tape, then use the eraser end of a pencil stuck into the take-up spool
to take up the exposed tape. The tape guard is spring loaded so you
need to hold open the guard with one had the whole time or you risk
damaging the exposed tape. Practice on a junk tape a bit to get the
hang of it.
This procedure should erase enough of the initial header of the tape
that it will show as blank and allow you to get fresh ATIME and header
info on subsequent recordings(1).
If, as Seth mentions, your goal is to obfuscate all data on the tape,
then use thermite.
1. I would never do this in an attempt to pass off a one or more pass
tape to a trader as new. I always use brand-new tapes for trades and
only jack around with stuff for my own amusement or for tapes in my own
collection of stuff I play every day.

Further to Seth's accurate comments: I use a modest electromagnet
eraser for DAT tapes. (Benjamin 24-016, www.markertek.com) Time
is an important factor when using a bulk eraser. This model will do a
cassette in 30 seconds each side. For a DAT, at least 2 min. per side
is required. Since the Benjamin is hand-held, its a bit of a hassle but
it works for those rare occasions when I want to "blank" a tape.
