I agree to a certain extent with those that say once
you've traded your source away, it's no longer yours.
Also as Alex aluded to, people are going to do
whatever the heck they want with your source even if
you put a line in a text file like 'do not convert to
mp3'. I won't go into this too much because frankly
cds are cheap, bandwidth via high speed is much
cheaper than it was say 5 years ago, so many people I
interact with don't even snail mail trade anymore.
Therefore, who cares if someones infiltrating the
trading pool with shn>wav>mp3>wav>shn. As long as you
can download a sample, pop it up in cooledit and see
the waveform, you know not to waste a $0.10 cdr and
1.5 minutes of burning time on it. Then you go find
the taper and get it from him directly.
My problem with stg is the same problem I have with
ebay. That of anonymous schmucks being able to get a
login without any checks and balances to make sure
their intention isn't to get it and put it on ebay. As
Bill Shaw posted earlier (I think), the value of the
show is in the first couple weeks after it's happened.
Then the demand for those sources drops off as weeks
and months pass and the only people still looking are
those die-hard fans that hopefully are fans that do
not sell. Until stg addresses the ease of the
anonymous ebay seller to get their hands on sellable
sources, I'm going to continue trading within a
trusted circle of tapers and traders I know and trust
and let everyone else get the single point mic>md
sources that are put out on stg every hour without
source info.

:-)
I have to echo the sentiments of 99% of the
people who've responded thus far. If you don't
want your shows circulated in a manner that's
beyond your control...don't give copies to
anybody. That's pretty much the only solution.
The reason I, and so many others, got into
taping in the first place was to spread music that
otherwise might not get heard. I take at as
almost an honor when I see someone taking
the time to spread a show I taped, whether it
be via B+P, trade offers, or STG.
Just my $.02

they directly choose...
Direct on that?

When I first started trading, long ago, it was in the world of cassettes and
Relix Magazine ads. I have to admit that I enjoyed the hierarchy of having
master tapes that were always superior to analog copies. When the digital
world came into being, I had to deal with the reality of sending out copies
that were every bit as good as the originals. In time I found that the vast
amount of music that's now available more than makes up for all my masters
becoming everyone else's masters.
And whenever I want a one-of-a-kind jewel, I just go out and tape a show.

Actually, while the underlying musical composition belongs to someone else;
In the United States the copyright in the Sound Recording would most likely
be construed to belong to the taper. In that sense, "the show" would belong
to him.

Clint,
My advice would be two fold:
(a) If you want total control of your work, never let it out. Consider
withholding parts of your collection. You are under no obligation to share.
(b) Consider a creative commons license (http://creativecommons.org/) for
what you do release.

Hi All,
I have an extra set of the MBHO KA 200 N Cardioid Microphone capsules that I need to sell. These are practically brand new, have been tested and work perfectly. Retail value is $500 for both so I would like to get $400 or best offer before resorting to an Ebay auction. Email with any questions.
Thanks,
Ben

I'm selling off some of my INCREDIBLE DATs. They all were used by
recording studios for production & finding the perfect mixes before
production. There are NO data & cheapass tapes. They range in length from
30min.-94min......with most being closer to the latter. They are
manfucatured by Apogee, Ampex, HHB, Denon, Maxell, Sony, DIC, TDK, 3M,
AGFA.Most of them have tags reading "Production Master....Remix
Master.....and the like. Actually, There are several artists you are
familliar with, but, as I'm selling these as blanks, I WILL NOT mention the
artists. Most of these tapes sold for $8-$12 apiece........which means it'd
be worth $1680 - $2520! I'm putting them up @ $1.85 each!!!! So, With
shipping, if you want USPS priority mail......It'd be $408.50.........UPS
Ground is $412.00..........Keep in mind, these are the rates for the
Continental USA states. Reach me here, or @ jameshelgerson@sbcglobal.net
.
