From: "Bob Silver" <bocabob@bellsouth.net> Subject: ISO-JEFF BECK...Royal Festival Hall, London 13th September 2002 Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2004 22:43:24 -0400 I figured I'd try and put out feelers for a recording of JEFF BECK at Royal Festival Hall, London 13th September 2002, to go on a DVD filmed from same show for better sound! Following is the request from the Filmer: Filmed on a Panasonic DS55 mini dv camcorder using inbuilt mic (big mistake) captured, edited, simple motion menu made with Vegas 4. Authored to DVD with REEL dvd 2.5 The audio on this show isn’t excellent, the inbuilt (normally very good) mic was used but for some reason it just didn’t come out all that good (its certainly very listenable though) If anyone has a DAT source of the show I’d be happy to re author the DVD from the master tapes it would certainly be worthwhile Just figured I'd try to help, ;) Gather the memories and spread the love!! From: analog414@comcast.net Subject: ISO: STRAWBS DEC. 1976 CAPITAL THEATRE FM MASTER CASSETTE Date: Mon, 05 Apr 2004 03:08:58 +0000 Hello fellow tapers, anyone old enough out there that recorded the Strawbs in December 1976 at the Capital Theatre live on FM? Or that knows who did? I will send 5 concerts from my list to anyone who can hook me up with the MASTER FM CASSETTE from that live performance. There has to be a few who recorded that gig on the radio. Just pick out 5 shows that are already on cd. If I can borrow that master cassette I will make it ten concerts. From: Barry Welch <barryw@io.com> Subject: re: stg Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2004 22:18:12 -0600 interesting thread. i just discovered stg recently and grabbed a few of Neils latest Greendales a recent Dylan, and a sweet 77 Jerry show and I'm loving it.. I tried to sell my buddy john goode on the concept since he recently moved over to roadrunner, but he was bummed about his burner crappin' out on him.. the convo: me: Neil @ bonnaroo's up grab it! It's a soundboard I think http://www.sharingthegroove.org/msgboard/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54277&highlight=Neil+Young jbg: I do plenty trading with tapers not traitors GET it? me: nope I don't "GET it"! WTF do you mean by traitors? jbg: I was just fupuckin around as I xcan barly keep up with people like you than the world. Tapers make the tapes Its a job. Taders trade. downloaders get it all. I can feel his resentment, since it has been said here before... it's getting easier and easier to just grab stuff of the internet, but taping is hard work... almost a job sometimes, and johnny like myself takes his hobby seriously... he's the guy who introduced me to sonic studios DSM-6 mics many years ago and since I got my pair I love 'em and my hobby.... But I don't really feel the tape/ show belongs to the taper... if it "Belongs" to anyone, it's the artists/performers, and I don't mind sharing the "archives" that I've been lucky enough to have made. so Carl, like Jerry sez: Relax! I realize the trade bait value of a show may diminish drastically if everybody and their little brother already has your DAT show in mp3 on their nomad or iPod... -- "Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it" - Henry David Thoreau b It s hard to plese the masses with a fucped burner.

From: "Joe Ray Skrha, Attorney at Law" <joeray@ptialaska.net> Subject: looking for complete recording of Neil Young-3-28-70 Santa Nonica Civic Aud Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2004 20:02:59 -0800 Hello Friends, Recently I was asked for a copy of my recording of Neil Young/Crazy Horse at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium from 3-28-1970. When I compared my setlist to the master list on Tom Hambleton's fab-riffic "Sugar Mountain Site" I discovered my version was missing 6 songs. Hence, I request if anyone had a complete recording of this show with the below setlist, can you contact me for a trade??? The correct setlist from the complete show is: On The Way Home, I Am A Child, Everybody's Alone*, I Believe In You, Birds, Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing, The Loner, Helpless, Country Girl, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Winterlong, Down By The River, Wonderin, Come On Baby, Let's Go Downtown, Cinnamon Girl, Cowgirl In The Sand I just remastered and remixed my two master recordings of 2-11-73 and 11-19-73 of Neil in Cleveland. The versions floating around are straight analog without any remixing... I now have the remixed version of my masters with better sound and much less noise. ProTools can do wonders... So, if you have a complete 3-28-1970 recording in fine shape and wish to trade from my 140 page list, please let me know. I will email you my list or you can have both of these remixed masters... . email me at my new address: joeray@alaska.net Peace, Joe Ray ps: I have been on these lists for over 8 years. spam finally got me... my old address : joeray@ptialaska.net will be killed off. My new address is: joeray@alaska.net please put it in your notebooks or address books. Peace... and Happy Easter !!!!

Date: Sun, 04 Apr 2004 22:38:11 -0800 I know it's a digital medium and therefore like a cd shouldn't be prone to quality loss, but do DAT tapes become more prone to errors with each consecutive over-dub? ie: You record an entire tape and then re-record over the original material and over-dub that, etc...
From: "Wayne Brissette" <waynefb@earthlink.net> Subject: Re: creative commons license Date: Mon, 5 Apr 2004 03:32:08 -0500 "Martin Klingmeyer" <martinwk@ptd.net> on 4/4/04 at 20:50 stated: > >(b) Consider a creative commons license (http://creativecommons.org/) for >what you do release. Having looked at this, there is only one problem (actually two) with this. There isn't a section that says don't convert this to X format. There is a section on derivative works, but if you read the legal version of the license conversions isn't covered. The second problem is while cute, this license isn't much of a license from a legal standpoint. Let's face it, none of the issues Clint is worried about are going to be helped by using this license. I have an unmodded(1) SBM-1 that I use in conjunction with a Sony PCM-M1. To my not-so-trained ear, there is very little noticeable difference. The A/D circuitry in the M1 is excellent for a portable and in a stealth situation, I'd see no need for adding the SBM-1's bulk to the chain. I used to like the fact that the SBM-1 gave independent control to right and left inputs, but since getting a set of good matched mics, I rarely need to make any adjustments. I'd like to hear a comparison of an Oade modded SBM-1 to the stock M1/D100 A/D but I don't know anyone that has one. As far as purchasing a new SBM-1, I believe that Sony no longer makes them so that might be tough. 1. It is modded to the extent that it has a coax digital output in addition to the Sony 7-pin cable. I did this mod myself. -- Wayne D. Hoxsie Jr. wayne@hoxnet.com PGP Key ID 138BCEE1

From: "Matthew" <wehttam6284@hvc.rr.com> Subject: my thoughts.....STG Date: Mon, 5 Apr 2004 11:01:51 -0400 How about this guys? If it weren't STG, then I'm sure there would be another avenue....before STG there was Direct Connect. Some still use this program as a matter of fact. My opinion is that if everyone didn't take this oh well, who cares, attitude then I'm sure this wouldn't be such a bad thing. I post all shows I tape on the groove, except the ones I find other tapers hording, such as APC, Tool, etc. People who tape these bands are notoriously greedy. I just make a promise to anyone who puts my shows on the groove.....first off; if you do put them on there, and you're a taper, best expect me to do the same...with most hording tapers, it does the trick. Secondly I promise that if they do it they also will never receive another show from me. I also request all trades go through me, this isn't because I am greedy.... I simply want to keep the CD generation low, and quality as high as possible. "Therefore, who cares if someones infiltrating the trading pool with shn>wav>mp3>wav>shn. As long as you can download a sample, pop it up in cooledit and see the waveform, you know not to waste a $0.10 cdr and 1.5 minutes of burning time on it. Then you go find the taper and get it from him directly." I care.....VERY much so. Jerks like that are a waste of my time, and time as I am sure you will agree, is worth far more than a $0.10 cdr. With STG, and any other BIT TORRENT related site, you cant download a sample....unless the poster puts a TORRENT up with just a sample. Don't get me wrong guys, I am NOT against internet sharing/trading. But I do think its best left for bands like Primus, who record SBDs of their shows and sell them on their website. This gives people a choice, low quality AUD tape, or a high quality SBD. I personally would choose the latter. What aggrevates me is most of the people that complain about shows sold on ebay, is MOST have bought a show or more off of it. Want them off ebay, e-mail the band with an explanation and a link to www.primuslive.com. Tell them to go to ebay and try to find a show for sale on there of Primus. And to then do a search for bands who don't allow taping/sell their own boots. Its usually a good bet you will find more of said band. Peace, Matt

From: Dave D <hobbesthecorgi44@yahoo.com> Subject: Copyrights in recordings of shows . . . Date: Mon, 5 Apr 2004 12:28:02 -0700 (PDT) Discussion Re shows on STG Comment: Are they really your shows? NOT! Response: Actually, while the underlying musical composition belongs to someone else; In the United States the copyright in the Sound Recording would most likely be construed to belong to the taper. In that sense, "the show" would belong to him. -Martin Comment/Response: The above statement is not 100% accurate. My understanding is that if the artist/performer makes a recording of his/her performance (fixed in a tangible medium of expression (e.g., via a tape or cd)), then the copyright in that performance belongs to the performer. The right to fix a copy of a performance is one of the exclusive rights included in the Copyright Act and one of the issues debated and fairly well-documented in the 1976 Copyright revisions (i.e. how to secure a copyright of a live performance). An unauthorized taper, or even an authorized taper for that matter, would not have any copyright in a recording of a performance if that performance is recorded by the performer. The most a taper with permission would have would be some sort of limited license attributed to their copy (with no rights of distribution, etc) but only if expressly granted from the performer. Some artists' taping policies indicate that copies can be made (distributed) in trades of equal medium or for cost. I don't think that technically amounts to a grant of the exclusive right of distribution held by a copyright owner . . . Now my statements are based on some recent quick research and from my intellectual property courses that go back about 12 years ago now. Yeesh. I'm not a practicing intellectual property atty, so it's quite possible there have been subsequent changes in the Copyright statute or case law interpretation that I missed. But I doubt any changes would loosen the rights afforded to the copyright holder . . . so I certainly welcome any comments or corrections to my statments. . .
