Let's not forget that the SBM-1 is not just a pre-amp but more specifical=
ly an A/D converter - while it is an improvement on the D7/D8 pre-amp, it=
is also a significant improvement on the built-in A/D converters in Sony=
portable decks. I have never used my stock SBM-1 for it's pre-amp but r=
ather run a line-in from my MP-2 so the SBM-1 can serve as the A/D conver=
ter, rather then the built-in A/D in the Sony portables. As for the batt=
ery usage, yes the SBM-1 drains batteries but my past experience has show=
n that I could always run a 3-hour tape at a show without fear of the SBM=
-1 using up the batteries before this point. When there was a set break =
at some long jamband show, I usually threw in new batteries between sets =
to be safe...that is until I swtiched over to using Ec-Charge batteries. =
Now I have two eco-charges that run all my decks, my SBM-1, and my MP-2 =
all at once with no fear of running out of juice.
On a side note, I'm surprised no one has mentioned in this thread the old=
faulty claim that the A/D in the SBM-1 is the same as that built into th=
e D100 and M1 - this rumor was passed around for a long time on this list=
and elsewhere as the reason it was senseless to run an SBM-1 in front of=
a D100 or M1. To clarify this, it is the pre-amp in the SBM-1 that is t=
he same as the D100/M1, while the A/D in the SBM-1 uses sony's super bit =
mapping and is considered superior to the A/D in the D100/M1. As for the=
D7/D8, the SBM-1 has both superior pre-amp and A/D over those included i=
n these earlier model sony portables.
As for whether to use one or not - if you usually stealth and want to kee=
p things small, I don't think you'll be taking a substantial quality hit =
running a Sony portable without a SBM-1, but if you have one, you should =
use it. I always use my SBM-1 whether stealthing or not - not only for t=
he quality improvements but for a few other reasons. One was previously =
noted - the SBM-1 has split level controls. Also, in really stealth situ=
ations, I don't want to have to check the display of the deck to see the =
levels - I usually know the basic setting for my gear to get myself close=
to where I want to be before the show starts. I then position the SBM-1=
such that I can see if the peak lights ever light up and I know to back =
off a bit. Lastly, I have found that the SBM-1 is much less likely to "b=
rickwall" or cause clipping from a hot signal then the Sony portables are=
if you run a feed straight into the deck. This is true not just of mic =
feeds but also Sbd feeds. I can't recall a recording of mine that involv=
ed the SBM-1 ever clipping, while many are well aware of how clipping-sen=
sitive the Sony decks can be.
All this being said, I like my SBM-1 but wish I had a V3.
From: "Gary Davis" <g@hoxnet.com>
The SBM-1 was originally designed to replace the mic inputs on=20
the D7 (and later, the D8) and it was a very big improvement for=20
this. However, if you're not using the mic inputs on a D7/D8, here=20
is something to consider: the SBM-1 is a battery hog, and the=20
chances it will ruin your recording by dying before the end, is=20
greater than the chance you will hear a sonic improvement. MHO.

Paul,
While I agree with your thinking, and want as much of my own music
archived in shn as possible, I don't question what other people want. I
think peple have the right to make what I think are bad decisions, and
if I want my decisions respected, I should do the same for others. I
really dn't feel any responsibility to educate people who don't ask for
education.

Carl,
I wish I could speak on global terms. Unfortunately copyright law is so
fragmented, any comment that one makes has to be regionally qualified. Even
with Ungary Round Table, GATT, and WIPO we have yet to develop a globally
uniform copyright convention.

You better bring this point up with Lawrence Lessig. He is a professor of
Law at Stanford, was lead council for Eldred v. Ashcroft, and chair of
Creative Commons. I am sure he will be quite concerned that the license is
faulty.
